Earlier this week, the Houston Astros called up Max Stassi from the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks. On Tuesday, he made his Major League Debut against the Rangers, going a solid 2-3. On Wednesday, he faced Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers. Things did not go very well.

On the SportsCenter replay, fast-forward to about the :12 second mark on the video and you'll see what we mean. It's the top of the eighth inning, bases loaded, two outs. Scheppers, working from the stretch, throws a first-pitch, 96 mph fastball straight into Stassi's face. To get a better sense of how badly that must have hurt, watch MLB.com's slow-motion, front-on shot.

Stassi was taken to the hospital, where he was kept for observation overnight. On the bright side, Stassi's free trip to first drove in his first Major League RBI.

I just love the references to "luck," when lack of skill (on the pitcher's side) seems more appropriate.

Even with a concussion, this guy could play infield better than most current 'stros.

This kid is called up from Corpus Christi this week and gets called out wandering off of the base in his first MLB game and then gets hit in his second. Glad he is OK.

These things are also pretty hard on the pitcher. Schleppers needs some support, too.

Worst part of baseball. Hope he gets well and into the game soon. Jason Heyward took a pitch in the jaw last night. It was even worse.

"You never want to get hit in the face." - wise words from Erik Bedard.
