Police: Dallas Man Was Playing with Shotgun When He Fatally Shot His Friend in the Face

Early yesterday morning, around 4 a.m., Dallas police responded to a call at a Red Bird apartment complex: A 20-year-old woman, Shakeydra Freeney, was dead inside one of the units, having been shot in the face with a shotgun.

There wasn't any clear indication at the time of who'd killed her or why. That wouldn't come until later in the day, when police tracked down 20-year-old Rickey Jackson. At first, he told detectives that two black men had murdered Freeney, then ran off with the weapon. Only after he was confronted with the account of another witness, which fingered Jackson as the shooter, did he confess.

The night had started out innocently enough. There were a half dozen people in the apartment, just hanging out, when Jackson found a shotgun in the closet according to police documents. He brought it into the room where Freeney was and began fiddling with it.

The first time he pulled the trigger, the chamber was empty. The second time, however, it wasn't, and the barrel happened to be pointed at Freeney's face. Jackson dropped the gun and ran. During questioning, he told police that the shooting was an accident and that he hadn't known the gun was loaded.

Accident or not, Freeney is dead, and police arrested Jackson on a manslaughter charge. He's currently sitting in Lew Sterrett with a $150,000 bond.

I didn't read it either; I had issue with Mr. Flippant; I assumed you had!

Did you just go with my joke there? Because I was just making a Pulp fiction joke without reading the article, you're being serious coop.

none of those are designed to kill people (hell one of them is meant to create them)

Sebastian, a) it's NOT a tragedy? I bet Marvin's folks / siblings / friends might disagree with you... b) Is it your position then that someone killed by a drunk driver is expected consequence of vehicle ownership? c) I do NOT want to live in your world. d) *playing* with a shotgun? - reminds me of that commercial where the guy walks up to the juggler and asks for the chain saws w/o training or practice.

I wonder who apartment were they in for him to have found a gun in the closet?

I have noticed that many of the anti-NRA commenters are also commenting with a pro-abortion stance on another story on this site.

For those, shouldn't you be celebrating the abortion of the victim after 249 or so months?

Ok, I'm going to hell for this, but was his friend named Marvin?

"the barrel happened to be pointed at Freeney's face."

And there's the problem. Every gun is loaded...even unloaded guns are loaded. First rule of gun safety is that every gun is treated as loaded all the time, every time.

this is not a tragedy, but an expected consequence of allowing citizens to own guns. They get what they look for..

So a shell just happened to load itself into the chamber, and the gun just happened to be pointed at the woman when the trigger was pulled?  What an amazing series of unlucky coincidences!

Every time a black baby is dismembered, you, being a staunch leftist, surely celebrate. Disgusting.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz You do realize that your constant misrepresentation of a class of people based on your own erroneous perceptions is exactly the same character trait that makes a racist a racist and a Nazi a Nazi, right?

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz

Had this young man been a member of the NRA he would have had a publication sent to his home that regularly offers its members safe opportunities to practice sport shooting.  He would likely have had his curiosity regarding firearms fully satisfied in a safe manner, thus negating the reason to exercise that curiosity in such a foolish way, and the resulting tragic outcome.  The NRA tries very hard to prevent this outcome and certainly doesn't celebrate such moments.  It is a very small group of liberals whose minds are free of the encumberance of critical thought who so relish being able to distastefully jump up and down and gleefully point to a tragic accident as  this as validation for their narrowly held views.  I believe that to be the better example of disgusting.

@ruddski Can you please point us to some 'celebration' of dismembered black babies that you have seen Myrna engage in? I would like to see that. Surely, an intelligent person such as yourself can furnish proofs of their disgust? Yes? ~ / ~ OM

@RTGolden1 @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz you are a competent judge of such things or by mere insinuation and innuendo you think you will sway someone with otherwise absent proof or logic? And you yourself are not racist? I doubt that; all people are basically racist about the 'other' - you, me, Myrna; it's reducing things to race and then acting on that impulse with harmful intent or action that makes external racism dangerous. Thinking does not. So if you have some proof of Myrna's racism, by all means, bring it out in substantive fashion. Otherwise, you are eating up valuable web space with emotional gibberish, not reason. ~ / ~ OM

@wcvemail @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz U think such comments make you clever? they do not. they show you for what you are; bitter with a whiff of sexist condescension. Any real ideas to share or just ad hominem, irrelevant attacks, dear?

@russell.allison1 Bullshit.  The NRA gets rich on the oceans of blood of American citizens being murdered by the precious guns they worship.

The Joshua story involves a semi automatic rifle, very different than a shotgun. Jackson would have had to intentionally chamber a round to get the shotgun to go off on the second trigger pull.

@gregmarcydagama @RTGolden1 @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Try reading what I wrote again greg.  I neither stated outright, nor did I imply that Myrna is racist.  I merely pointed out that her channel of thought, brought out in her statements about the NRA (always the same thought, that NRA members revel in the bloodshed of innocents), is consistent with the discriminatory thinking found in racist comments.  Please, if you have something concrete to counter my observation, feel free to post it here, I'm always ready and willing to concede when I am wrong about something.  I don't think I was rude or hostile in my comment, Myrna obviously didn't either, or she would have ripped me a new one, as she's done before.

Thinking does not make racism? I beg to differ.  Racism IS thinking.  Discrimination is the word you're looking for.  Discrimination is the action, racism is the thinking.  You can't prosecute a business owner for being a racist, you can prosecute him/her for discrimination.

As for wasting 'valuable web space', as the old Dorito's commercial said: "Crunch all you want, we'll make more!"

@gregmarcydagama @ScottsMerkin @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Myrna never mentioned the NRA's leadership, nor their corporate arms sponsors.  Everyone of your comments here in this thread have been misguided.  You're usually sharper than this when you comment here.

Myrna mentioned 'the NRA', an all-encompassing term that takes in the membership, leadership and any sponsors, possibly even the entire sport of Nascar, fans, drivers, owners and sponsors who are being sponsored at one of the TMS races by the NRA.

The focus on the NRA leadership and sponsors is entirely yours.  You ask scotts and me if WE are self-appointed seers?  Are you?

@ScottsMerkin @gregmarcydagama @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz What are you, some self-appointed class teacher dispensing absolutions? Unless you can prove otherwise, both statements, they made as stated and inferred are both quite true. What is it you object to, Myrna using the common phrase, 'Bullshit.' Please, come now. Rather than discuss the merits of what she said and treat her as if she had a modicum of sense, herself, instead you pompously declare, ' thats a terrible reply to a very well thought out comment that throws your cry baby gun argument right into  ditch that you cant recover from' What? Do you just write to feed a personality itch or does thoughtfulness and respect for political dialogue enter into it. Just because so many people on this DO webpage love nothing better than running into ground ad hominen everyone else and any idea they don't either like or understand; you, I have read your other posts, you're a smart guy. And I not defending Myrna personally; it's just that she is right about the NRA's leadership and its corporate arms sponsors. You seem to have nothing to say about that - just that she personally as a writer and thinker does not measure up to your quaint standards. Wow. I would sure hate to see how you would treat a more famous person saying something similar in a public forum. ~ / ~ OM

@ScottsMerkin @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Both Russell.allison1's and Myrna's statements can be simultaneously true. They do not cancel each other out; in fact, they are both true, imho. The NRA leadership and its corporate arms manufacturers are profiting enormously bloated incomes from senseless violence that's its corporate allies in Congress, ALEC, etc, schools to prison pipeline all help support. That being said, the general rank and file members of the NRA are typically intelligent, well-trained in the use of sidearms, rifles, etc. And, their training organization does stress safety, first. The evidence of the NRA's presidents and Board personally profiting from an filthy, vulgar arms race is indisputable and provable. Plus, the element of racism against people of color is also alarming. Good day, Scotts. ~ / ~ OM

@oakclifftownie @russp @titusgroan Double barrel shot gun? Pulled the trigger on the empty barrel and then the second trigger struck a live round?  Haven't seen any reference to the type of weapon, other than a shot gun, but that's one possibility.

oakclifftownie

@russp@oakclifftownie@titusgroan " In a press release, investigators said McCord had two dummy rounds placed above his loaded magazine. McCord ejected the two dummy rounds and believed he was making the weapon safe by pulling the trigger to drop the bolt on an empty chamber, but forgot he had a loaded magazine in the AK-47."
