"Without This Badge, I'm Still Human." A Cop's Heartfelt Plea For Respect from an Abusive Prisoner

Categories: Crime

AngelNava.jpg
At 7:15 Sunday evening, 20-year-old Angel Nava was being led to the Lew Sterrett Justice Center infirmary by his two arresting officers, R. Chavez and M. Spence. The 20-year-old, right eye nearly swollen shut, had just been picked up on a warrant for harassing two Murphy cops. He began to struggle and hurl obscenities at the officers, as he'd been doing since he was arrested. The volley of insults, and the officers' response, was captured in a police report they filed later that night:

NAVA: "YOU MUTHAFUCKAS CAN'T DO SHIT TO ME, BITCH!" [Raises leg and delivers a powerful heel kick to Chavez' knee. The officer stumbles backward into another prisoner.] "NOW WHAT, BITCH? HOW DAT FEEL?"

SPENCE: [wrestling Nava to the ground] "Calm down, sir! Calm down!"

NAVA: "FUCK YOU, BITCH. YOU AIN'T SHIT WITHOUT THAT BADGE!"

SPENCE: "You are wrong, sir. Without this badge, I'm still human, which makes me somebody."

NAVA: "I'LL BE OUT IN THREE DAYS MUTHAFUCKA, SO IT'S NOTHING."

SPENCE: "I don't think you will be out in three days, sir."

NAVA: "BITCH, YES I WILL, AND I'M GOING TO GET OUT AND SHOOT YO' BITCH ASS YOU PIG."

SPENCE: "Excuse me, you are going to do what, sir?"

NAVA: "YOU HEARD ME, I'M GOING TO KILL YOUR BITCH ASS AND THEN FUCK YO' MOMMA, YOU PUSSY!"

SPENCE: "That's not nice."

Nor was Nava's response: "SO WHAT? FUCK YOU, I'LL SHOOT YO ASS."

Nava was ultimately lifted to his feet and booked into jail without further incident. He faces the original harassment charges, plus one charge of assaulting a public servant and one of retaliation.

Spence and Chavez meanwhile, taken aback by the utter lack of respect for their dignity as human beings, retreated to a quiet room to sip chamomile tea and talk about their feelings. [Disclaimer: That last part didn't actually happen, but the rest is in the police report.]

The irony of calling a cop a bitch when your about to be one in the county.

The restraint by these 2 cops is admirable, miraculous, and all too rare.

Sounds like a long term in jail would be good for this young man.. & he might find out in jail just how tuff he is....

I read this article as being complimentary of the officers' restraint in the face of considerable provocation.

Tone will be riding to Eric's defense any moment now..but dude, wtf Eric? I would imagine it was an attempt at humor, but you are not funny. Funny looking I'll give you, but leave the yucks to Gavin and Alice.

If I was that cop, I'd be needing a new night stick, as mine would be m.i.a. (missing in ass)

"Spence and Chavez meanwhile, taken aback by the lack of utter lack of respect for their dignity as human beings, retreated to a quiet room to sip chamomile tea and talk about their feelings. [Disclaimer: That last part didn't actually happen, but the rest is in the police report.]" The last paragraph is a poor attempt at being tongue-in-cheek. These police officers should be commended for their restraint and upholding the responsibility of their jobs, not lambasted with this nonsense. Either find a way to report ethically on these occurrences, or stick to food and music as Jason suggested.

So now if cops do a good job and show complete professionalism they're tea sipping Nancies?? I like you Observer, but this article is trash.

Society incarcerate people because we are afraid of them, not because we are mad at them.

No doubt this guy failed the attitude test hence, he did not avoid the ride downtown however, it is the assault which should get him some quality time in the slam.

What about the charge of threatening to kill a police officer?  Is that the retaliation?

ptmoore2012
ptmoore2012

Now the real test. Will a  judge throw the book at this jerk or just wrap all the charges together.

He threatened the life of a police officer. That should be good for 20 years in prison. I hope you will

follow up on this story and make sure this jerk gets what he deserves. The officers deserve a commendation

and the community's thanks.

Yet another example of how the left leaning Observer puts police in a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" position. The real reason the writer takes every opportunity to ridicule police is that he hasn't the courage and mentality it takes to do the job himself. These officers didn't fit into his preferred category of "overzealous thugs" because they used their intellect to deal with the trash that they encounter daily, so the writer tried his best to make them out as weak. Pathetic.

Oh Observer, stick to food and music because your coverage of anything else is just silly.

All good white progressives know in their hearts & have faith that the only hope for America's improvement is for whiteness to be eradicated and for the USA to become even more like a combination of Mexico and Africa than it already is!

Eric, I can't help but think that based upon your last paragraph that if these two policemen had not remained professional in the discharge of their duties and had gone "postal" on this guy, that you would have been the first to cry out about police brutality and how "evil" these two policemen are; and, that they are indicative of the general mentality of policemen.

These two officers are to be commended, and congratulated,  for their actions.

ChrisDangerShow

Rare that you find police officers like these two in this modern day. My dad would deal with guys like this when he was on the DPD and I cant imagine how he kept his cool, I try to live up to his example daily in all my dealings.

@nathan_mclain I didn't get that impression.  I took the last paragraph as saying that they're decent people who were sufficiently self-aware not to be unnerved or rendered self conscious by the incident.  More like they just took it in stride and went on being well-adjusted people who are comfortable in their own skin and didn't feel the need to overreact to this criminal.  (Upon re-reading, I'll add that there may also have been a bit of incredulity at the notion that these officers would have expected any better behavior from the guy they were arresting.)

Maybe I misread that?

@ptmoore2012 your stupid they cant charge my husband with that because it was never said the police made up a bunch of shit to get the book thrown at him and it didnt work the police they'ed to cover up the fact that they beat my husband before they got the the jail and im glad to say my husband will be home sooner then later

observist
observist topcommenter

@TheCredibleHulk  Yes, absolutely.  We hear plenty of stories of police acting far worse in response to far less provocation.  However... this is from the police report, as written by the police.  They may find it to be in their self interest to clean up their side of the dialog when writing the report.

The people who call them pussies would probably shit their pants in this situation.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul My exact thoughts.  If the officers had given Nava the beatdown he so richly deserved, Nicholson would have lambasted them.  I guess, with nothing else to snark about, he picked the only thing that stood out: Exactly what the liberal mindset demands of police.  A rather ingenious self-indictment.

You know, I read this piece again this a.m. from a new perspective with an objective eye and deliberate foreknowledge that this report was filed after the fact by officers Spence and Chavez, and, I've got to say, I laughed out loud at the contrived nature of their description of the scene.
