Republican Congressman Ralph Hall Accidentally Wandered into a Gay-Rights Soiree

He would have left sooner, but he didn't want to be rude and not finish his drink.
Republican Congressman Ralph Hall of Rockwall isn't the most virulently homophobic member of Congress, but he's not exactly waving a rainbow flag either. On his website, he boasts of his support for "traditional family values," which he has expressed by decrying the decision to lift the military's ban on openly gay soldiers, fighting to continue to withhold federal benefits from same-sex couples and reiterating that marriage should be defined as a "union between one man and one woman."

So, it was a surprise to all when Hall wandered into a June 5 reception for the Victory Fund in D.C., an LGBT group dedicated to electing gay candidates to public office.

Hall, who just turned 90, had indeed wandered off course, which isn't to say that Hall wasn't greeted warmly. "One of the sponsors immediately greeted me, courteously welcomed us and offered refreshments," he later told CQ Roll Call.

He chalked the mistake up to a scheduling error. He'd been invited to a different reception honoring another congressman.

"When I inquired about the congressman being honored, the sponsor did not know anything about that reception and presented his card," he told Roll Call. "At that moment I realized that this was not the reception I intended to attend, and I put down my glass, thanked the sponsor, and told him we would be leaving."

Then he skedaddled, but not before adding to his already considerable legend. Hall is not only the oldest, skydivingest-ever member of the House, he has now waltzed into the belly of the LGBT beast and emerged unscathed. The man never ceases to amaze.

He can't tell the difference between a sexually themed party and a lunch for a conservative politician.

That's a level of stupidity that even Palin and Bachmann would be hard-pressed to match.

Sounds as if both Rep. Hall and the sponsor of the soiree' were both very polite to each other and mindful of their manners.  ... As it should be ...

He had to immediately go home to wash off the cooties.

it would have been really cool to hear that the gays descended upon him, rending him limb from limb...

His Republican supporters call that kind of behavior "socialism".

Fortunately for him, it wasn't a gathering of his supporters.

@holmantx ....It use to be a given that young bigots grew into middle age bigots and then senior bigots.

Thankfully, we have a new generation who ...within time...will reject the antique views of their parents and help create a world of equality.  I am not seeing the age discrimination you speak of as the Congressman wasn't the only elder there.  Gay people face the same age discrimination you speak of.

@holmantx Only if  you're looking for it. The Rockwall voters obviously don't care that at 90, he biologically, empirically cannot be the same as he was half his long life ago. Refusal to acknowledge that is not a protection against age bias, rather, it's just a refusal to acknowledge reality.

because he's an OLD bigot? naw-let him stew in his disgusting OLD hateful juices...

@ScottsMerkin @norman.dostal Gays are far too busy destroying "family values", creating terrorism, floods, earthquakes, child molesting, and recruiting the young to have time to bother with the destruction of one sad old weak fuck.

You may be confused from seeing so many cases of Het Bashing in the local papers.  But I do admire your never ending search for gay hypocrisy.  It does exist, but you need to go beyond the surface.

@JackJett @holmantx

Of course you don't.  Mr. Nicholson had you at the first sentence.

And he sunk the hook with a statement saying what the congressman . . . was not.

Which is all it takes to convince the sharp shooters around here that he is.

@norman.dostal and you can stir in your young ( I assume ) hateful juices.  Looks like two versions of the same coin.

@Daniel @JackJett @ScottsMerkin .....If you are asking how is gay hypocrisy different that heterosexual hypocrisy.....the answer is...within our own issues and that within our community bigotry exist.  The GLBTQ community is incredibly diverse and within each group there is a sub-group of a sub-group.

There is a great documentary out now called How To Survive A Plague (that was my war in LA) which shows how we stumbled  over our own hypocrisy trying to .  And I happen to think the Cathedral of Hope is full of hypocrisy.

@JackJett @ScottsMerkin @norman.dostal How is gay hypocrisy different than any other hypocrisy?

I see now that  Mr. Dostal was likely being sarcastic and both the Merk and I missed it. Happens.

@JackJett@holmantxI grew up in Rockwall.  I voted for Ralph Hall the first time I was able to vote.  He was a Democrat back then, by the by.  It's true that he has grown older, like all of us do, but if you ever met or interacted with him (and he makes a point to make himself accessible and attend every function he can), you would see that he's still quick witted and great at work with members of both parties.  This is why he continues to be re-elected overwhelmingly in both primaries and elections.

Rockwall was and is incredibly accepting and open minded.  One of the houses down the street from me growing up housed two openly gay partnered men, their mother and their 3 adopted children.  Our neighbors across the street were two partnered gay men.  One of the men sold most of the houses in the neighborhood and is one of the most successful realtors in Rockwall/Heath.  My hairstylist graduated as an openly gay man from Rockwall Heath High School.  He'll tell you to this day he felt incredibly accepted.  Quite the opposite of what you ASSume the case to be about Rockwall.  Why don't you stop stereotyping and get out of your judgemental rock that you live under and stop opining on issues that you know nothing about?

Those "sharp-shooters" never showed up.

There's just you - looking for a fight that isn't happening.

@holmantx If you think he had me with the first sentence....could it be that he lost you with it too?

Seriously.....gay people are not immune from ageism, sexism or other forms of discrimination, we simply have to add them and prioritize them.  Can you imagine what it would be like to be a 80 year old gay atheist Iranian living in Rockwal?
