State Senator Wendy Davis Just Started Her Epic, All-Day Filibuster Against Abortion Restrictions

When, in the wee hours of Monday morning, House Republicans ended debate and pushed through one of the toughest anti-abortion bills in the country, it seemed destined to sail on to Governor Rick Perry's desk. It merely needed the OK from the Senate, which shouldn't be a problem given that they'd just passed an almost identical bill, sans the "fetal pain" measure that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation.

But then, despite some rather extraordinary efforts, Senate Republicans failed to suspend the rules and bring up the measure for a vote on Monday.

Enter Fort Worth Senator Wendy Davis, whose epic filibuster against school spending cuts in 2011 forced Perry to call a special session, promising an equally epic filibuster that will push debate beyond the end of the current special session at midnight tonight. That's 13 hours of talking, which began just now. Watch it above.

If she were 20 years younger, I'd almost volunteer to make a baby with her that she could abort after 24 weeks.

Yes I've read it. Did you skip over the part about clinic standards and hospital location requirements? What necessitates those regulations?

Did you read the bill? What do you find objectionable? Surprisingly, it is brief and to the point. It seeks to limit abortions to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, why is that problematic?

The fact is, the door was open to the government being involved in our health care issues even before Medicare/Medicaid and with the addition of Obamacare and alongside Judges and jury’sgiving their 2 cents they not going to go away anytime soon, but would I like to hear facts and figures.

What is the number of ambulances called to an abortion clinic because of complications? How is it decided that one fetus feels pain but a fetus with a congenital anomaly does not, even for a moment? Why does a vision operation require at least a ASC center and not an abortion clinic? Is there a difference between anesthesia being performed at an abortion clinic compared to someone in a dental chair? In what capacity and how often has an ASC center helped in an emergency situation for a small procedure? ETC ETC

No confusion. This issue is late-term abortion, after 20 weeks. If they only represent 2% of the abortions, then it won't be a big problem to stop them, right? Still no defense of the procedure...

I've always been a sucker for extended oratory in favor of industrial-scale death for innocents.

Go Wendy go!  Don't let the christianists tell you you can't kill children in the womb, when they are less likely to run away in fear or hide under the table.

Go Wendy! Thank you for representing Texas women. You can do it!

John, I'm sorry that you are confused by more than one topic at a time, it was not my intention to confound. I was referring to the actual legislation being proposed, not my personal beliefs. It may behoove you to read up on the details. Less than 2%of abortions are performed after 20 weeks ... Why do you think so many people are rallying for Senator Davis trying to kill this legislation? Hint: because its not just about late-term abortion. #SB5

John McMahon

My thought was very clear, it's impossible to defend late-term abortion given what the procedure involves. Trying to confuse the issue by pretending that you are concerned about medical care and keeping the government out of your panties, only confirms just how reprehensible the procedure of late-term abortion really is. If you were able to defend it, you should be able to do it without obfuscation.

John ... Gruesome videos of abortion is so 2002. This isn't just about abortion... It's about women's health, access to medical care, and keeping the government out of my panties. Maybe you could contribute your own thoughts instead of using the whole shock value approach.

Well, at least she's trying to erase the image of herself that her opponent Mark Shelton tried to paint last fall with this extremely creepy campaign commercial...that still keeps me up at night.

We need a strong governor who will work for the people instead of for rich cronies.  Wendy for Governor!

We need many Wendy Davis' in office. If women don't run for office, because of the time it would take away from their family, business leaders, and the independent and progressive establishments need to stop ignoring intelligent, established women over 40, whose children are successfully grown or who don't plan on having children, and start grooming them for public office, through business opportunities.

@Threeboys And it's that hatred towards women that she is fighting against. Please go tell your mother, your wife, or your daughter you wrote that. Disgusting.

@John McMahon It's not up to government to control a woman's body. If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one.

@John McMahon The additional ASC requirements for abortion clinics has a big chunk of it. Did you read it? How is it decided that one fetus feels pain but a fetus with a congenital anomaly does not, even for a moment?

Veggie_saint

@John McMahon The argument that "If they only represent 2% of the abortions, then if won't be a big problem to stop them" is a flawed and very insensitive argument.  It is your right to feel that abortions are wrong and to express that opinion, but you do NOT have the right to make that choice for other people.  Your argument amounts to "only the majority have any rights"...listen to some of the examples that the Senator is reading and consider having a bit of empathy for those who might fall into that 2%.

whocareswhatithink

@John McMahon What are your thoughts on abortion clinics becoming the same as a ASC? That's also in there. How does that help? How does that not help? If a abortion clinic becomes the same as a ASC, should we expect the same medical care at a dentist clinic?

Veggie_saint

@John McMahon Late term abortion (final trimesters) has never been permitted and is not the issue in this forced filibuster.  SB5 is a horrid example of not only restricting women's access to legitimate care (and early intervention) through a series of questionable bully tactics and legal run arounds (which is what forced this filibuster in the first place)

@Katarina We need to have an ethics investigation for the one we currently have.  Reminds me of Illinois gov.  who is in prison right now.

@Katarina Yes! There is nothing more disingenuous than an opportunistic, self promoting chippy who got on the right boards, wrote meaningless books, and who have no real passion for their latest career opportunity, they are using to springboard to the next "opportunity".  The cronies should be putting their money on potential winners the people actually like and trust, who may be a little out there, but who have been successful at persuading the public, despite no assistance or money from a family or the cronies.

@Michelle Anne Eyrich  On behalf of ANY citizen who prizes liberty and freedom--THANK YOU ,Wendy Davis.  Gov Rick Perry's  2013 special session "scorched earth" legislation promotion  will assure that this fine senator receives well earned support among women and libertarians now and in the future.

What hatred? I think she's hot.

Any concern for the baby I mentioned that may be aborted?
