Richie Whitt is Writing an Epic Tell-All Blog on How Greggo Got Them Fired From The Fan

Greggo, left, and Richie Whitt, during happier times.
Richie Whitt and Greg "Greggo" Williams have now had two months to reflect on CBS's unceremonious cancellation of The Rage, their drive-time sports talk show on 105.3 The Fan, and they've come to starkly different conclusions.

Greggo chalked it all up to ratings, which he says had dropped. Whitt, a former Observer columnist, has another theory: "I was the baby that got thrown out with Greggo's dirty bathwater."

Williams explained the show's decline to DFW.com last month. "The show got off to a good start," he said. "It was such a good start that even I was pleased with it, and I'm my own worst critic ... And then came, basically, the year of 2012, when ratings just plummeted."

Whitt, on the other hand, says ratings were fine and describes the show as "very profitable" when it was cancelled. "First of all at The Fan, we knew it was never realistic for us to beat The Ticket," he says. "It was in its 18th year, we're in our fourth. Our goal was to beat ESPN, and the ratings with ESPN went back and forth. If we played 10 games ... we won five, they won five."

The real reason, Whitt insists, was Greggo. "He got fired and he pulled me down with him," he tells Unfair Park.

Whitt recounts all this in painstaking detail on DFW Sportatorium, the website he rolled out this week. Actually, it's probably more accurate to say he is in the process of describing, since Part II of the five-part saga just dropped today. The whole thing is presented as a sequel to his 2008 cover story on Greggo. It's titled, in the best summer movie tradition, "The Hard Lie 2: Sh*t Hits the Fan."

The piece pulls no punches as it traces Greggo's pill-fueled spiral toward incoherence. Here's a sample from Part I ("Dead Men Talking"):

In the end, born of necessity, we all grew uncomfortably numb to Williams' B.S. The "affected" appearances were becoming more commonplace, but the lies had long been habitual.

Williams' fibs ranged from the mundane (he made up a story about his dogs getting loose as an excuse to get out of dinner plans with RAGE), to the maniacal (he boasted about being fast friends with Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper), to the morbid (after first prematurely promising on the air that he'd be a pallbearer in Chris Kyle's funeral, he later claimed his scheduled speech at the Navy SEAL's memorial was canceled at the last minute, along with those of Texas Gov. Rick Perry and conservative online talk-show host Glenn Beck), and, finally, to the monstrosity (he fabricated a tale about a serious illness/injury to his live-in girlfriend, Jennifer Rosenbaum, all for the self-serving goal of missing two days of work.)

Truth? Williams is a compulsive, diabolical liar I neither trust, respect nor want to work alongside ever again.

Such an outcome wasn't -- or shouldn't have been -- a surprise for Whitt. Greggo's history of drug abuse and unreliability (he's now been fired from all of the sports talk stations in town) was already well-documented when Whitt wrote his cover story. But at The Ticket, the site of his most prominent meltdown, Greggo's partners kept their jobs. At The Fan, the axe fell on Whitt and his fiance, producer Sybil Summers, as well. That, he says, is why he's writing a epic tell-all blog.

"In radio, you never get a chance to say goodbye. You never get a chance to explain your side," he says. "This is my attempt to clear my name."

Greggo's, meanwhile, will get dragged through the mud for a few days while Whitt ramps up Sportatorium, which he describes as a continuation of his work on the defunct Observer blog of the same name. It'll be a mix, he says, not just breaking sports news but also movie reviews, pictures of his bloody stubbed toe, and whatever else happens to be on his mind. He says enough advertisers have followed him to the web to earn a decent living from the site for the foreseeable future.

Greggo, we assume, remains unemployed, though Whitt isn't exactly sure.

"I haven't spoken to Greggo since the day he walked out of the office and we were fired," Whitt says. "He's reached out to me several times at some point I might reach back, but not right now."

a 5 part series dedicated to ripping apart your former co-host?  pretty pathetic and unprofessional on Whitt's part.

I looked at it earlier and saw that the dude has taken it to a whole new level of breaking a post into multiple pages for the extra clicks on his site. 15 pages for one fucking post? No thanks.

As mentioned, when RW puts some effort into writing, he's great at it. No need to read about the firing though. Pretty sure RW was warned multiple times that this would happen.

Having read through Richie's blog posts, I am impressed by his new demeanor, and surprised at what a textbook fucking junkie Greg Williams is.

This is what happened from the Ownership side of the deal.

Boss #1: We have to get rid of Gregg Williams, he's missing too many days and has too many bad excuses for it. I think he's using drugs again.

Boss #2: Ok, so we get rid of Gregg and that leaves Ritchie Whitt and Sybil.

Boss #1: Oh really? Well that won't work. Ritchie can't carry his own show, he can barely handle one with a partner.

Boss #2: Ok so we get rid of Ritchie too. That leaves us with Sybil. Can we reassign her to another show?

Boss #1 Well she is Ritchie's real life partner, which means she is off the table for us pretty much, so lets can her too. We can get another piece in here that's single.

Boss #2 I like the way you are thinking here. Lets sign some retreads to take their spot, nobody is listening anyway.

Sybil is a piece of ass.

Does anyone remember the story of the annoying gay radio host that got fired the day before his gig started because he talked about "jacking off" with Robert Wilonsky here on UnFair Park?  Someone said he was dating Glenn Beck now.

The Whitt Formula:

1) Identify a popular radio personality

2) Find a disgruntled sidekick (or, now I guess, be a disgruntled sidekick)

3) Give sidekick an open mic to rant

4) Sparingly sprinkle in quotes from undisgruntled radio people that all essentially say, "I don't see what the big deal is" for "balance".

He's hit Greggo twice and Russ Martin.  Who's next, a slam piece on Mark Davis?

I give it to Richie, he's exposing the big southern dummy for what his is, a fraud and a nutjob..

I'll be the first to say I never thought much of Richie on the radio. It seemed forced. I will also say I don't necessarily believe he got fired solely for Greggo's actions, although I do think they played a part. I think they would have made a place for him had he been a stronger host.

That in no way, however, makes this series he's writing any less riveting.

As for Greggo, I'm a Greggo fan, but his podcasts are a disorganized/disintrested/distracted/tweaked out mess, and that's being complementary. While I do enjoy his blog posts, his podcasts, well, blow.

In his last one he made it almost 13 minutes into his normal 1 hour podcast before he flipped out on-air and split. Then...in what could be labeled the worst spin job in the history of spin jobs...he made a blg post that blamed it on "technical difficulties" and shut then his blog down until...coincidentally...the last installment of Richie's series.

With Greggo being on his own and no partner to cover for him, it looks like he's unintentionally hanging is ass out in the open for all to see....

....and from the outside looking in, there may very well be a grain of truth to what RW is writing.

At least Richie is back to doing something he is really good at when he wants to be, writing.  His long reads are usually excellent and he did some damn fine writing for the Observer, up until his radio gig seemed to interfere with his writing and the old sporty turned into a nut kicking fest

You think the country bumpkin has run out of local chances? There will be another sports station startup that will hire/fire him! What a waste of no talent!

He worked with Mary on an investigative reporting desk at the Star-Telegram way back when. I'm surprised he's airing so much dirty laundry on his blog about a troubled and drug-addicted former on-air partner.

@Rooster0620 I'm with you. It doesn't take a week to fix your audio issues. Anyone that thought Greggo could do 2-3 blog posts a day and a podcast is higher than he is. Honestly wouldn't be shocked if he never came back, but odds are he will. I'm sure the Hard Line feels better now that someone else is in danger of getting Led Zeppelin machine gunned for being on GW's bad side.

@ScottsMerkin That's true but here's a news flash: THERE IS NO MONEY in writing for the Oberserver or for his lame blog. That explains the bitterness.  DFW is a top 5 market and even guys like Richie made hundreds of thousands of dollars.  When mofo Greggo was canned at the Ticket, he was making close to a million dollars a year. Of course he pissed it all away.  He's an addict.  I suspect that Richie was responsible with his money but it's hard to find a $200,000+ job writing. And we all know he's done in radio.

@lzippitydoo mofo greggo's only talent is being the butt of jokes.  But being an addict he actually thinks he has real radio talent. LMAO

Put a fork in him, he's done in radio.  It's up to Jenn's family to carry his sorry ass now.

Just saw the post.

This just in: Richie Shitt is still a modestly talented writer/douche with bad hair plugs and a radio persona that is worse than nails on a blackboard, and Greggo can't be trusted.  In other news today, the world is round and the sky is blue.

@ChrisYu by 4:57 yesterday when this posted I was a 23oz bud light and a Jack daniels shot into my night out with no kid duty.  as you can infer from that my night turned into one drunk happy 6 hrs and then the fuggin Spurs blew the game.  Oh well

@Rooster0620 Who's defending them?  There's lots of shitty people in the world.  I just don't need a 10K word "expose" on every one of them.

@bonzerwolf He made a living being a writer well before going on radio. There aren't many people that are going to get rich in the news business. Is there something you enjoy doing, like golfing or softball or going to the lake? You don't get paid for it but you still do it right? I don't know the guy but I'm guessing he's put some money away?

@bonzerwolf all very good points, as a reader though, I dont care what he makes, I just want to read what he writes

@ScottsMerkin @ChrisYu I mostly quit watching the NBA a few years ago after concluding that it was too much like pro wrestling; a bunch of larger than life sized people paid by owners to produce highly profitable rather than legitimate athletic contests.

I decided to watch the end of the game last night to witness the possible end of season and saw the San Antonio players get mugged on their last two possessions.

It wasn't even close. A third grade YMCA B-Team ref would have seen those fouls. But the refs were not going to call anything if it meant jeopardizing a possible $$$ game 7 $$$.

The announcer subsequently stated what a treat the fans were in for.

My time will be better spent watching a game of 3-on-3 out on the playground.

@ScottsMerkin @everlastingphelps @Rooster0620

as much as I've enjoyed the past 3 posts, I'm kind of ready for him to move on to real writing now. I know I'm one of the few that actually enjoyed his writing here; it went to shit when he went on the Fan and the abortion of blogging on CBS' site. He still has the reporter gene in him, with his sources and documenting everything.

@Rooster0620 So you're arguing against someone crying, reading every word of the drivel, and defending the subjects of the articles.

Shit, for a second there, I thought you were arguing with me.  Duly noted, carry one with whoever it is you are arguing with.

So let me get this straight...you're "not" reading it, but yet still crying about it like a six year old schoolgirl.

Duly noted.

@Rooster0620 Who said I was reading it?  That's the beauty of formulaic writing like that.  Once you've read a couple of them, you've read them all.

@everlastingphelps @Rooster0620 true, but so many people eat this shit up, he making money with every click and every comment.  Though I do wonder how long the advertisers will stay after the Greggo story dies down and its back to writing about Sybil and him travelling to Mexico or vegas or another of his top 10 lists.
