Glenn Beck Buys 72,000-Square-Foot Studios At Las Colinas, Is Apparently Here To Stay

Categories: Famous People

The Glenn Beck media empire won't be paying rent in Irving anymore. Mercury Radio Arts, Beck's "news, opinion and entertainment network," announced Wednesday afternoon its purchase of the Studios at Las Colinas, which has served as home base for The Blaze and his Glenn Beck show since 2012.

Lest we forget, Robocop, JFK, Silkwood, Prison Break and, last but not least, Walker Texas Ranger, sprang from this studio. Now, for the foreseeable future, the renamed Mercury Studios will beam out into the world programming like "B.S. of A," "Liberty Treehouse" and, of course, Beck's own fetal cheeks and indecipherable diagrams.

"We are proud to call Texas our home and be part of the local community in Irving," he told TheBlaze. "We are building a world-class facility that provides TheBlaze with the highest quality talent and top of the line production capabilities so American stories can be told to viewers across the country."

Unfortunately, Beck could not be in Irving for the announcement. He attending a rally in D.C., where he delivered a stemwinder titled "We Will No Longer Accept the Lies," in which he invoked Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King, icons of social justice, without apparent irony.

I get it.  Some of the commenters get it.  Beck, serious about what he says or not, feeds the paranoia of the right-wing lunatic fringe, who believe his outrageous claims and cheer on his racist rants.  There's nothing funny at all about him or his act, if it is one.

Um he's still paying Irving rent.

Don't really care but al least it will increase the tax base, bring jobs and tourists.

Anybody pay attention to what happened yesterday?  The Federal Reserve has been juicing the economy with tight monetary policy for four years now.  This action was to give Congress time to engage fiscal policy (be it spending cuts, tax increases, or a combination of the two).

Congress went the other way, with projections that the National Debt will geometrically increase as a result of racking up annual deficit after annual deficit.

Absolutely no restraint in spending.  Indeed, government is doubling down on future spending with new social spending programs, and by demanding to not touch existing entitlements.  There is no indication whatsoever the federal government will ever begin to recognize its fiscal heroin addiction, much less do something about it.  In fact, they have used this borrowed time provided by Fed action to slam another quart of Everclear.

Yesterday Bernanke engaged in a little brinksmanship and stated he might ease off the funny money pedal.  Wall Street had a cat and dropped 200 points.  They know how contrived this entire scheme has been.  They are fatalists.  But Bernanke may have finally realized his action (monetary policy) by itself is not going to stop what’s coming if fiscal restraint is not introduced.  So he rattled the cage just a little with a few words, and that’s all it took.

But fear not borrow-n-spenders, he’ll blink and we’ll stretch this illusion on out a few more years (maybe).

It’s like a 747 whose engines are flagging and we are losing altitude.  The throttles are jammed to the firewall but it ain’t happening, baby.  The ground is coming up and we had a choice – either put this big airship down on a crowded freeway or plow it into the side of a hill – at speed.

Our politicians have elected to take the hill.  It’s what the people want, of course.

It is what Beck, Limbaugh et al are so exercised about.

What will be interesting to see is if in the future, the studio is back on the market as part of a bankruptcy liquidation . His views are so strong and relatively strident one has to wonder when the gloss will wear off or the parade marches in another direction.

Another way to write this story: massively rich celebrity dumps tons of money into the local economy and starts huge business that will employee dozens of locals.

But, you know, that wouldn't allow you to get your snark on.

A world-class facility, now even Irving is going to be world class.  Dallas just falls further behind.  If only we had a horse park.

I wonder if Mayor Mike tried to pitch him on building a studio in southern Dallas or maybe the Cedars. Would love to what Beck would think of filming down there.

@bealotcoolerifyoudid Too late! There's already a horse park (Las Colinas Equestrian Center) across the street from the [former] Studios @ Las Colinas. Perhaps Beck's Co (The Blaze) will buy that next and rename it Blazing Saddles. Hi-O Silver, away!

@ruddski

I've listened to about 60 minutes each from Beck and Limbaugh. I consider them to be entertainers, certainly not journalists. I would defend their right to broadcast their opinions, but I don't consider their programming to be news, and based on the admittedly small sample of their work I have been exposed to, I don't consider either of them to be particularly clever or a deep thinker. Really, aren't they just in the business of being outraged about something or the other? Kinda in the mold of JimSX, but on the opposite end of the scale?

Yeah, whenever I get disillusioned about the state of humanity because of the existence of throwbacks like these guys, I just comfort myself with the thought that, surely, they must fill some regressive evolutionary niche that needs filling as the rest of us progress as a species.

don't know what to tell a serious student of the human condition like you, man.

Al I can say is that maybe you will believe the President:

The Economic Report of the President is an annual report written by the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. It overviews the nation's economic progress using text and extensive data appendices.  hIs 2012 report is here:

http://tinyurl.com/crnf2kq

See: Table B-78. (Sources: Department of Commerce (Bureau of Economic Analysis), Department of the Treasury, and Office of Management and Budget.) 10th column - Gross Federal Debt.

It is now skyrocketing.

@CornyDoggy @holmantx

Like I said, the Fed is going to wind down this QE $85 Billion a month purchase of our own debt (insanity - ask yourself where the Fed gets the money to buy $85 Billion a month in Treasury debt) because Congress refuses to stop spending FAR more ($1 plus TRILLION per annum and rising) than it collects in taxation.  Can you get your head around this formula?.

And if the Fed lets interest rates rise to normal levels, that bankrupts the nation since interest payments ALONE would then consume the monies collected for entitlements.

Have you not been paying attention?  We won't be able to make our debt payments.  That means we can't issue and sell more debt to pay the interest only on the debt already issued, which is growing exponentially.

And that's just one torpedoe roaring into the main magazine.

CornyDoggy
CornyDoggy

@holmantx

It is NOW skyrocketing?  How about if you graph the marginal yearly increase in the debt and/or deficit?  Also, the debt/deficit is a function of both receipts and outlays.  Receipts are a function of economic activity and tax policy. Outlays are a function (among others but mainly) of automatic spending increases for things such as soc. sec., unemployment and medicare.

What exactly is your point anyway?  The Right is good for the country's long-term health and the Left isn't?  Have you considered that one side is not absolutely right about any particular issue one way or the other?

ruddski
ruddski

I think that's what Beck is doing.

If he brings money, jobs and exposure to N Texas, all the better. It won't be the first instance of the benefits of Beck.

Surely, those who wish he'd just go away really don't mean it, a liberal couldn't be THAT selfish and self-centered.
