"Black People Are ... Like Animals": Dallas 911 Operator Fired for Racist Facebook Tirades

Over the past several months, since the murder of Deanna Cook and a couple of other cases laid bare deep-seated problems at the city's 911 call center, Dallas police have scrambled to hire dozens of new call takers to address a chronic staffing shortage that had lasted for years.

It probably shouldn't be surprising, given the haste with which the hires were made, that at least some of the new recruits are less than ideal. One of them, April Sims, was fired on Wednesday after eight months on the job.

Dallas PD made the announcement Tuesday in a very brief news release that said rather vaguely that she had violated the department's social media policy.

Did she ever. Sims' Facebook page isn't public, but The Dallas Morning News and WFAA got a hold of screenshots from her account. They don't post the screenshots, but they do post some of the choicer quotes.

For example:

I'm a very easygoing person and I will give the shirt off my back to help others, but when call after call are black people fighting and screaming and hitting each other and they want to yell at me and treat me like [expletive] (Editor's note: It's probably safe to imagine "shit" here.) when I'm trying to help, is not cool.

And:

You want to call 911 cause your boyfriend put his hand on you and you want to press charges when you don't even know his real name? Sure let's a make a police report for Dino, that is his street name.

And finally:

Black people are outrageous! They are more like animals, they never know how to act ... Always causing problems.

And lest you think that Sims' 408 Facebook friends witnessed Sims' tirade in complicit silence, at least a couple pointed out that she was being a racist asshole. But Sims was unrepentant.

I stand by every word I said. And do not apologize.

The end.

Give her credit: She got that last part right.

Read "Into the Cannibal's Pot: Lessons for America from Post-Apartheid South Africa" and you'll see where PC and neo-tribalism is taking our country. The lady has a point.

Most Americans of African ancestry don't live in "black" neighborhoods and rarely have reason to call 911 so Ms Sims sample is not representative. That said, a disproportionate number of 911 callers from certain precincts do not engage in quality social behavior. I suspect that her observations with respect to that limited subset are fairly accurate. It's an economic and cultural thing. The same observations could be made about certain segments of kicker society.

The politicians said her comments were inappropriate.  They DID NOT SAY THEY WERE UNTRUE.

Political correctness trumps the TRUTH in Dallas, TX.

The funny part about this is that "her facebook page is private"...except for 408 of her closest friends. Who has 408 "friends" on Facebook and actually thinks that what they say on their page will remain private if its controversial?!

If she isn't bright enough to know that anyone with a job they want to keep shouldn't be lobbing racist comments on FB, she probably shouldn't be entrusted with saving people's lives. Good riddance, dummy.

Sounds like a very perceptive young lady. Sad, but can they prove that she is wrong?

PC, perhaps not but is she really that far off base considering that she had to sit and listed to the "stuff" 8 hours a day.

She shouldn't have been fired for that! Com'on!! Whatever happened to personal and free speech! This is such racist censorship in disguise!

@mother266 well Ham wasn't cursed his son Canaan was the one the curse was put on. The IQ thing you have low and high IQ's in every race just like you have criminals in every race to make a blaket statement and say this about all black's is racist. But if the comment is directed towards those who commit the  act then it's fact based. And yes I'm A black man and I don't agree with alot of the behavior of some of my people but guess what they are my people none the less.

@mother266  She is probably a card carrying KKK member. And she is proud of it... she is a bad example of white people.

@JoshvanHulst Free Speech means that you cannot be sent to jail for speaking your mind.  It does not mean that you can say anything you want, with no repercussions.  Tell your boss that you think he is a total jerk...it isn't illegal to do so.  But don't be surprised if he fires you for it.

Crotus
Crotus

@Chårlie Kuhlmån She worked for an entity that has policies regarding what she can post online on social media sites.  If she didn't know that, she wasn't paying attention.  If she didn't like it, she didn't need to take the job.  A Public servant should no more expect to keep her job after spouting racist blather online than should a church employee who goes online to say that there is no god and that the entire institution of religion is designed to control people and garner wealth and power.

CogitoErgoSum

@Chårlie Kuhlmån Really? Where have you been for the past decade? Hiring managers always look up people's social media profiles to see if there's anything to learn about who the candidate really is. There's no privacy on the Internet.

@mineyours123 @davebehrens We are all animals.  Some of the darker of us are more barbaric animals. She discerns the truth, and speaks it.  No one here has provided facts to dispute her comments.

@Crotus No one ever said anything about saying something about their employer. It's one thing to say something how displeased you are with your employer. I merely referenced that if she was annoyed by idiots who call in to 911 for dumb stuff, she has a definite right to voice her annoyances about them without retaliation. She never complained about the job, but the people who call in for ridiculous stuff.

They're are other ways to be dangerous other than crime and drugs, fatherless babies, & low academic scoring.. There are neglecting of children, pushing them beyond normal standards, allowing children to witness your dependence of prescription medication, teaching your child to only socialize with people like (them), having the mentality that (my) race is better than (your) race, being satisfied with knowing your a close minded person. That's just off the top of my head:/! Oh and as far as these things being factual, my step daughter is WHITE just moved in with me her BLACK mother and have witnessed first hand and been subject to all of these things:) needless to say I won't force my daughter to live this way!

They don't realize this about African Americans, because they're racists first, and then animals second: )

@strange.times

@strange.times  Individual whites have been barbaric.  Are white neighborhoods barbaric?  Are black neighborhoods barbaric?  Compare crime rates for each, compare drug use rates for each.  The vast majority of white neighborhoods are safe, support exceptional high schools with high graduation rates and college acceptance rates  Can the same be said for black neighborhoods?

Are whites moving to black neighborhoods, or is the opposite true? Compare the felony conviction rates for blacks and whites, and the incarceration rates for each. Compare rates of single parent households for blacks and whites, percentage of black babies born to 'fatherless'  children compared to whites.  It is difficult to adopt a white baby, with people going to eastern Europe to find a white baby or Asia to adopt a Chinese or Korean baby; no one, not even blacks, want to adopt black babies.

Answer the above questions truthfully to discern the public perception of blacks. Perception is reality.  Was the 911 operator wrong to speak the truth?

strange.times
strange.times

This is an argument you really can't win, sorry. You can come up with examples all damn day and we can all come up with counterexamples all day.  You want "proof" that black people aren't barbaric? There are tons of examples of great people of color, some who changed our entire nation for the better. Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Condaleeza Rice. You want "proof" that white people are barbaric? Charles Manson, Adolf Hitler, every cult leader ever, every mass murderer in American history (besides Malvo if you count him as a mass murderer)

@JoshvanHulst  She has a job dealing with the public.  Her comments should not have been commented on in writing at all.  She is an animal.

JoshvanHulst
JoshvanHulst

@Crotus I agree with your point, but even if you are in a public setting people are more vocal about their views. If a person overhears something that they do object or don't object, if the message wasn't directly at you and you overheard the conversation you can either deem it as rude or impolitic for listening when it wasn't exactly at you but at the situation at hand.

We do have that right in a free society to speak out our mind on things that are troubling. Whether or not you feel it should be a in a private or open setting, the ability to voice a concern shouldn't been shunned at.

Crotus
Crotus

@JoshvanHulst I think you missed my point.  I was speaking in response to your comment "Whatever happened to... free speech!"  Telling off your boss was an example.  I didn't mean that she actually did it.  My point is that, while everyone seems to agree that we have the right to free speech, many people seems to believe that that means 'immunity from personal responsibility'.  Let me give another example that more closely follows what actually happened here.  Let's say that this girl was in a stall in a public restroom.  In the next stall, is one of her friends.  She starts saying that same things she posted online.  The racist stuff and the specific examples of calls she actually took.  She and her friend think that they are alone and she goes on for several minutes.  Maybe her friend is agreeing with her and maybe not.  But she makes it perfectly clear what she thinks about her job and the people she was hired to help.  But they aren't alone in the bathroom.  Someone hears the whole thing and tells the boss. Maybe they even caught the whole thing on a camera phone and the video shows the employee coming out of the stall, still talking.  There is no denying it was her, she said what she said, and the boss fires her.  At that point, no one is here questioning whether or not her freedoms have been violated.  She is free to have and voice her opinions.  But just because she overestimated the privacy she had while in that stall (or posting a remark on facebook) and /or didn't fully understand the policy that her employer had prohibiting this kind of conduct, does not mean that there will be no consequences.  Even in a free country.
