The House Voted to Rename Central for George W. Bush

When State Representative Dan Branch introduced his proposal to change the name of a seven-mile stretch of Central to George W. Bush Expressway, we thought it might be one of those novelty bills that gets a couple of chuckles before dying a quiet death in committee. We hoped it was, at least. We couldn't stomach the confusion of having two North Texas freeways named for George Bushes.

But wouldn't you know it, Branch's bill just sailed through the state House. And this wasn't just a Republican thing. Every single Democrat signed on save for Dallas' Helen Giddings, who wasn't there. The final vote was 147-0. That's an unofficial tally, mind you, so it's a hypothetical possibility that a couple of votes were recorded incorrectly. But not 147 of them.

(Update on May 9: A staffer from the office of Fort Worth Democrat Lon Burnam writes to inform us that the vote was not, in fact, unanimous. "He most definitely voted against the bill," he writes. "The clerk says an updated, official version of the vote should be up tomorrow or early next week.")

Dallas Democrat Eric Johnson made sure to remind his colleagues on the other side of the aisle just how cooperative his party was.

Leach, for the record, represents Plano.

The name change still has to through the Senate, then Governor Perry, but the House vote puts it well on its way to being law. So start updating your mental maps now. And remember: to get downtown from up north, just exit the Bush Turnpike, go south on Central to Bush Expressway. Take the Bush past the Bush Presidential Center and exit just before the Bush turns back into Central. Any questions?

(Note: The stretch of highway in Branch's proposal has dropped from seven miles to about three since the bill was introduced. The revised bill has the George W. Bush Expressway running from Knox-Henderson to Northwest Highway.)

Now, all TxDOT needs to do is add the swastikas to the signage proclaiming the George W. Bush Expressway, and then do the same to his daddy's toll road.

Well, this does open the door for a thru-way named after our esteemed Governor.

For the inevitable weary traveler that will find themselves hopelessly lost between all of the Bush themed roadways around here, if you find that you're on the wrong Bush highway, you can just take the handy "Ooops" bypass and get yourself back on track.

Well, that section used to be the narrowest, most difficult, extremely dangerous stretch of roadway in town. Yep, seems about right.

ridiculous! I suppose the petition that was floating around was given no attention at all! Typical. Ignore the opinion of the citizens of Dallas!

Well, how about renaming the following to keep with the theme: Loop 12: Bush Circle to commemorate the London rock band. Loop 635: Bushmaster, to appease all the Second Amendment fanatics.Harry Hines: Harry/Bush Blvd, to commemorate, well, you get the idea.Any others I missed?

They should have named it Lee Harvey Oswald since he and Poppy Bush did the only thing Dallas will ever be Famous for on 22 Nov 63

They should have named the connector after Shrub. Take the Bush from uptown to downtown!

Henceforth, you shall be called "The Shrub" Expressway.  Thanks Molly.

Can we start some type of petition to replace Big Tex with a Giant Bush? That would be cool, and informational for the kids

Ah for the good old days when you couldn't name a public project for someone until they had been dead for 10 years

Don't just laugh at this, people.  It still hasn't passed the Texas Senate.  Find your senator on this site: http://www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/Senate/Members.htm#FYI and write them an angry message telling them to not vote for bill HB 3520 or you won't vote for them next election.  If they get enough hate from people that it makes them fear losing the next election, they may actually side with reason and vote against this dumb thing.

given up on my dream to name it Icky TwerpWay.

Ann Richards deserves to get 75, if it absolutely has to be renamed after a politician; the Bushes have already monopolized too much space (and attention) in Dallas as it is.

Now everytime travellers take the Bush to the Bush they'll remember they must be in Texas! Now let's add some shotguns and missing teeth to our license plates to complete the ensemble

Go East on the Bush, then South on the Dubya, then go see the new Libury! I like it! It sounds Texan!

Geezzzzeee, who died and made Bushes kings of Dallas? Weren't they originally from Austin? Go rename something in Austin. Leave us alone! Central Expressway is the highway I grew up on.

Won't the expense of every business along Central Expressway in the affected zone be substantial? I can't imagine who is offsetting those costs, unless it's coming from money provided by W's booster club.

@ChrisYu Naming it for Icky Twerp would be naming it for a guy with intelligence, as opposed to the new name that is being proposed.

At least, we know how old you are!

@Marvin Remmers NO! It sounds YANKEE! The Bush family is from Connecticut. You don't get to move here after your are born and then become a Texan. If you move here after you were born somewhere up north, then you are still just another Yankee living in Texas!

@Jerry Gilmore Davis Geez, man! Where were YOU educated? George H.W. Bush was born in Milton, MA and George W. (Shrub) Bush was born in New Haven, CT. The last time I looked at a map both of those places were far from Austin. In fact, tehy were both far from Texas.
