Irving High School Recalls Yearbooks After Discovering They Call Cheerleader "Ugly Hoe"

The news broke, as tends to happen in these cases, on Twitter.

And sure enough, thumb through Irving High School's brand-new 2013 yearbook and you'll find, under the group photo of the junior varsity cheerleaders, that one girl is identified only as "Ugly Hoe."

That's not her real name nor, for the record, is she a gardening tool. It's just what some as-yet-unidentified individual, presumably a student, thought would be a funny thing to call her in the official chronicle of Irving High circa 2013.

The district swears to CBS 11 that the name change happened after the yearbooks were proofed by staff. Otherwise, the 400 copies would never have been printed.

Only about a dozen yearbooks had been handed out by the time the mistake was caught and they were recalled, but it was already too late, the news having spread to Twitter. A district spokeswoman told WFAA that the district is investigating and will punish the culprit to the full extent of the student disciplinary code.

That presumably doesn't include changing the student's name to "Asshole" in the reprinted yearbooks. That can always be slipped in later, once the proofs are finished.

It doesn't surprise me being Irving. They probably thought it was correct spelling of the girl's name.

"Haleigh"? Good Lord. White people names.

It's sad, but true. A lot of teachers will sit and watch as these things build. It outrages for a second then people go on with their lives as soon as the next thing hits. Endless.

I quit Irving High School and had to get my G. E. D., because of people yelling homophobic remarks in front of the teachers. Some teachers when I went there didn't give a shirt.

A lawsuit is a bit harsh and won't solve anything. It won't cause a shift in the attitudes that cause problems like these. It goes back to needing more teachers that care. I had a few back in my school days, but a few is not enough. A few in the mix is the luck of the draw when the schedules are made. Both sides in the situation need people to talk to about their own problems. Sometimes it's just kids being kids, but at a certain point they are knowingly trying to hurt someone emotionally and someone that does that probably has a few issues of their own (didn't we all see the Breakfast Club and Porky's). Generally when a student has a problem they are told to go talk to their counselor, someone who is introduced maybe twice in the year. Who would a student rather talk to about their issues, a daily parental figure or a stranger they met in September? Again, we must not forget that the very young do things like this from time to time and we must reassure the targets that it is going to be OK. Give our students the confidence to laugh it off in the face of adolescent cruelty and give the bullies someone to talk to, someone who really cares.

Ugly Hoe is just mean. Home Run Hitler was a lot funnier.

Hoe= gardening implement. Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade.

They'd never win that lawsuit since the books were pulled and all of the copies destroyed. Sorry, she'd have a better chance winning a lawsuit planting a mouse head in her bucket of KFC.

Funny how we go right to the "Lawsuit" button...They pulled the books and they will be reprinted. If we all sued for getting our feelings hurt, we'd all be trillionaires.

LAWSUIT! for defamation of character, for starters!! Disgraceful, hurtful and despicable adults who allow or compromise IN ANY WAY!

Hopefully the punishment includes being forced to watch a spelling bee.

Mmm, it's middle right. She might be a hoe, I wouldn't say she's particularly ugly. Will need more time to decide.

@DktrStrangelove good callback on a reddit and Deadspin post. You made me chuckle. +1

At least they didn't add an "s" to the end.
