Delia Jasso Screws the Stonewall Democrats. No One Surprised Except Stonewall Democrats.

Oh, no, wait a minute, please. You're telling me The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas are shocked and amazed because Delia Jasso, the City Council candidate they endorsed against Scott Griggs in North Oak Cliff, turns out to be a spineless flip-flopper?

They thought she was going to be what? Abraham Lincoln? To people paying attention, Jasso always looked like somebody walking around with a big Magic Marker legend on her forehead saying, "Please don't trust me."

jasso_two.jpg
Pick a Jasso, any Jasso.
She apparently intends to break her promise to support a gay marriage resolution. I have a call in to her, no response yet. Dallas Voice online reported two days ago that Jasso, who lost to Griggs in the recent election, is now using her lame-duck days on the council to flip on the earlier commitment, possibly killing the resolution by costing a vote needed to get it on the council's agenda.

Stonewall Democrats of Dallas is an LGBT group with a history of forehead-slappingly perplexing endorsements in City Council races. In 2011 in the East Dallas District 14 race they endorsed James Nowlin against Angela Hunt. Hunt is one of the biggest friends the LGBT community has ever had at City Hall. She wound up beating Nowlin 2-to-1, probably with a lot of support from LGBT voters who were slapping their foreheads over the endorsement.

This time around the Stonewallers endorsed Jasso over Griggs, who has been another stout champion of diversity at City Hall. Jasso lost 40/60 to Griggs, probably with a lot of LGBT support. This almost certainly is not a question of the LGBT community not having its act together politically, much more likely a case of the Stonewall Democrats not having their act together LGBT-ally.

By all accounts her defeat put Jasso into the kind of vindictive rage her peers on the council have come to know all too well. For sheer meanness of spirit when the current council gets down and dirty behind closed doors, Jasso is topped only by Vonciel Hill.

But it's not like her defects of character were a big secret. One of the more absurd chapters in the recent campaign occurred when she lied to the entire editorial board of The Dallas Morning News about a memo she said she had signed demanding that a big fracking/zoning issue be put on the council agenda. Her opponent, Griggs, was sitting at the same table for the same Star Chamber session with the editorial board.

Strangely, I was not invited. Therefore I must rely on the accounts of others whose word I trust. I was told that when Jasso swore to the board that she had signed the fracking thing. Griggs, sitting right next to her, kept saying, "No, Delia, that's not true."

So they have this big duel of, "True," "Not true, "True, "Not true." Then the board says, "Scott, you can go, but Delia, we need you to stay after school." With Griggs out of the room, they start in on her, like, "Now, Delia ... Delia ... now, Delia," bringing to mind the Kristen Wiig SNL character Gilly, who always says, "Sorry."

But instead of saying sorry, Jasso runs her ass back to City Hall and tries to retroactively sign the memo. Griggs, a lawyer and no fool, has been there ahead of her and drawn some kind of line across the bottom of the memo with a notation to the effect that only he and Hunt had signed it as of such and such a time and date.

Then ... hey, do you mind if I do not tell the rest of this story? It just gets stupider and stupider the deeper you go. You get the point, right? Magic Marker on the forehead.

Here's what I think. I think the Stonewall Democrats have a tendency to make endorsements on what turn out to be flimsy criteria at best and at worst really bad information. They just need to work harder at this.

Or they could change the name of the group to the Mario Mendoza Democrats. An infielder who played for the Pirates, Mariners and Rangers between 1974 and 1982, Mendoza achieved one of the worst batting averages in baseball history, still referred to as "The Mendoza Line," a benchmark for failure at the plate.

Hey, it's a Latino name. That way they could even add a motto: "Just because we're diverse doesn't mean we're actually paying attention."

I'd like to thank the Dallas Voice and The Observer for the unpaid advertisement for The Stonewall Democrats of Dallas for mentioning this group in all the hate filled bullshit the have created the last 2 days. Don't like their endorsement procedures. Join the endorsement committee! Don't like who they endorsed?Join their membership. Think you can do better? Join log cabin republicans and see how that works for you.

It's good to see that segregating people into groups that feel they have to "get over" other groups, is working like a charm.

a few years ago i went to a stonewall democrats meeting and after witnessing how full of themselves and condescending they were i ended up joining queer liberaction.  at least they had some passion about gay rights.

Stonewall will never be able to deliver votes until their endorsements sound honest.  Why would any homosexual that pays attention do anything they suggest?  Nowlin over Hunt, Jasso over Griggs and a closeted Medrano over an open Weisfeld?  None of that sounds right to the politically active gay person that knows you don't treat your friends like shit.  God you'd think Hunt and Griggs were Vonceil Hill.  I'm really proud Oak Cliff didn't fall for it.

Jim you should see the president make sure these masses of people are qualified to vote at the endorsement meeting.  All registered just in time and ushered in at the last minute to vote for who he wants.  And then you never see these people again until the next endorsement vote.

Hmmm, the two paragraphs about the Nowlin and Jasso endorsements seem to pretty much sum it up.  If you want to be able to influence City Hall, you have to be able to deliver the votes, be they the dead, the ill, the infirm, or the just plain gullible.  If you want to be "Our Man Downtown", you better have your machine in place.

The Stonewall Democrats screwed themselves over as they seem to do on a regular basis.  However, this is about the biggest slap in the face we have had so far.  The current President of Stonewall said he had a lengthy conversation with Jasso but refused to reveal any details about the conversation.

Stonewall has a ultra conservative approach to politics and in place of demanding equality they sort of beg for it and accept any crumbs that fall their way.  There are some long time activist like Patti Fink and others who somehow have the tenacity to continue to work and fight for gay equality for years on end and never seem to tire.  While others, like me, like to sit on the sidelines and bitch and moan about it.

Incidentally, old-timer, it's now "Sharpie," not "Magic Marker." Has been for so long that those hipper and younger than us don't even know the term "Magic Marker." And the Sharpies don't smell the same, either.

Everybody automatically assumes their cause is just and should just be implemented because it is so pure and righteous.  Balderdash.  When you enter the political arena, people make deals quid pro quo.  Ms. Jasso did her part at start, but likely the gay community disregarded the committee and went with Mr. Griggs.  She did not get what she wanted and ended her side of the deal.  If you want to do politics, you better understand the system.  We have too many "righteous" political activists of every stripe that think government operates as they learned in 11th grade.  It does not.

This is like sleeping with a hooker and being surprised you got crabs. The Stonewall Democrats are a complete joke and will never live this down.

Preach on my brotha. I was there the night at City Hall when she went into the back room with Mike and Tennell and redrew the council map that would eventually begat her political demise and elevate Scott. When they all returned to the horseshoe, Scott called them out for doing it behind closed doors. Tennell and Mike acted like two teenagers caught smoking pot and denying it all by shaking their heads and holding their breath. Delia flat out denied that she had anything to do with it and all but said she never entered the room. And Vonceil went into her rant about the evils of being white and how "they" were dragged over to the new world on slave ships. It was weird and scary politics in 3D. Mike of course, pussed out and acted like nothing was out of kilter.

@MikeWestEast The first rule in going after endorsements is to figure out whether a group can deliver the votes. Unions are good bang for your buck in that regard. So are South Dallas churches. Jasso was so busy bending over backwards trying to be everything to everyone in a pathetic attempt at getting votes that she didn't bother doing her homework. Maybe Stonewall has influence citywide or in other districts, but she wasn't running for citywide office.

@MikeWestEast No, you're not getting it. The "quid" for Jasso was the "quo" endorsement of Stonewall. Stonewall endorsed her. It's not their fault if the gay community didn't abide by their endorsement and went ahead and voted for Griggs- she got their endorsement regardless. And now she is punishing every gay in Dallas instead of acting like a grown-up.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!!!

Many times the leaders of the Stonewall Dems have multiple agendas that seem to take priority over the gay issues.  And you are right about never living this one down.

But hey....we are going to make goddamn sure that every drag queen in Oklahoma is able to try on dresses at every store in Dallas.....

@anon @MikeWestEast Stonewall could not deliver either way--votes to Jasso, or a resolution to the gay community.  If you look at its record, that is par for the course.  It is not what it tries to be: a gay political machine.  It does not make a difference in electoral outcomes.  The only reason people pay attention to it is that there is no worthwhile alternative.  There is no gay political machine in Dallas.  And that is a good thing.

MikeWestEast
MikeWestEast

@casiepierce @MikeWestEast The real "quid" in Ms. Jasso's mind was delivering the vote.  Otherwise it could be just a wink wink "sure we'll endorse you"  knowing full well their community would go for Mr. Griggs.  Should she have known they could not deliver?  Probably.  Complaining about her reaction is like the Star Wars robot complaining that the big hairy thing was not obeying the chess rules.  As Harrison Ford said, the big hairy thing can rip people's heads off.  You can't.  Not liking the result, Ms. Jasso did the equivalent in the short time she could.
