A Woman Says She Beat the Hell Out of Knife-Wielding Attacker at White Rock Last Night

White Rock Lake has become a favored hunting ground for knife-wielding bandits. At the end of March, one made off with a cell phone and bicycle from kids walking along the path cutting through the park below the dam. Two weeks later, at almost the same spot, a young couple was confronted by a man with a butcher knife.

Those robbers (or, perhaps, that robber) were lucky not to have run into Leah Peisner. The 25-year-old -- who appears to be a UNT grad, artist and animatronic dinosaur creator -- was walking along the southwestern edge of the lake when she felt a tug on her hair from behind.

Turning, she came face-to-face with a stranger. She told police he was black, about her age, dressed in a black tank top and black running pants, and holding a knife with a six-inch blade.

We'll probably never know what the man had planned; Peisner never gave him a chance to make his intentions clear. According to what she told police, she immediately reared back and punched him in the face as hard as she could. Then she did it again. And again. When she was done punching, she let out a scream.

The man, face and ego bruised, turned and took off running down the path to the south. He was gone by the time police arrived. Peisner was unharmed.

You start the story with "White Rock Lake has become a favored hunting ground for knife-wielding bandits." What do you base that on?  I live within a 2 minute walk of that spot,--I can nearly see it from my house,--and, other than this story, I've heard absolutely nothing about it.  I'm there nearly every day, and I've seen nothing unusual.  You mention one incident.  Have there been others?

Good for her.  I wonder where she picked up the self-defense training.  They trained her well.

Not only is she beautiful, she's a bad ass! Or is it, "Not only is she a bad ass, she's beautiful"?  But seriously, it is always good to see someone innocently minding her/his own business come out of a situation like that unharmed.

Prior to throwing the first punch, she was heard to say, "STOP!  HAMMERTIME!!!"

Where is the obligatory quote from the criminal protectionist union(the police) to tell us we should all just do what the criminals tell us to do and hand over our wallets or let them rape us. "Don't fight back!" they always say. Fuck that.

Good question. Wearing Head Phones or Ear buds ? Is another good question .

Have they considered keeping a peace officer posted up in those woods behind the spillway? I've been walking back there and come across shanty towns and telltale signs of vagrants, and it's obvious that the huge area of dark, scary woods is attractive to criminals.

My brother was jogging through that area below the dam some years ago when he came up on two guys hacking on a biker they had down on the ground.  They we using lock blades and the biker was on his back with his bike as a shield.  One cut sliced through the gland under his jaw line and he was bleeding out.  My brother screamd, "HEY!".  They began walking toward him.  He started walking toward Gaston.  They went to a trot.  He began to sprint.  They went to hot pursuit.

He made it to Gaston, jumped onto a moving city sanitation truck on the drivers side as he rolled down the street and got the driver to call the cops on his radio.

DPD responded with a helo and kept the perps in visual until the street cops apprehended the two.

That treed area below the dam has always been a good ambush spot for bad guys.

My brother went back and took off his sock to stanch the bleeding.  The guy said "use my sock."  He was cut pretty bad.  The gland was bright yellow when exposed.

He saved that guy's life.  Brother was written up in the paper as a hero.  His line - "I did what I had to do."

The vic gave him a small wooden statue with an inscription "I did what I had to do."

Good for her. Glad she's ok.

I hope that's not her real name, otherwise that could be really dumb. If the attacker were to find this story he'd be able to seek her out specifically/directly now.

Perhaps it's about time we initiate background checks for people who buy knives? They sell knives at shows and conventions all the time and I don't even think you need a license for them. Ridiculous.

@oxtail Knives have other purposes besides harming people. Knives that have no other purpose -- e.g., switchblades and stilettos -- are, in fact, illegal in most jurisdictions.

Does that mean nobody has them? Of course not. Still, how fucking stupid could your argument possibly be?

@oxtail Maybe the knife guy failed a background check and he was limited to knives??  Thank you Brady Law.

@oxtail At least you have a chance, like this brave lady.  If he had a gun they'd be burying her today.

@Daniel @oxtail firearms don't have the purpose to 'harm people'.  Some are designed for hunting animals, some for competitive shooting (even used in the Olympics, that oh so recognized symbol of peace and unity).  The purpose for my personal protection firearms is not to harm other people, but to be available, if needed to prevent other people from harming me or my family.

The stupidity most apparent in the gun control debate is that we're debating how to deal with guns, and not debating how to deal with malevolent people.  It is the person who kills another person, not the tool that is used to do so.  Any measure that doesn't embrace that one, single, indisputable fact, is, as you so eloquently put it: Fucking Stupid.

@Daniel @oxtail   Not so fast there - guns have purposes beside harming people.  Wayne LaPierre recently gave a presentation on how you can use your gun to chop vegetables in the kitchen.  Of course, it was immediately followed by another presentation "Gunshots in the Neighbors' Kitchen?  Better Buy a Gun"

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz  You don't know that.  Her fighting back obviously caught him by surprise and he may have just as easily taken the same beating had he been carrying a gun.

oxtail

@Myrna.Minkoff-KatzAnd what if she had a gun?

Point is, it's events like these that just show the futility of gun control and emphasizes the importance of self defense by whatever means.

@oxtail I guess it would depend how much money I had and how much Dilaudid he was going to throw on me.

@Daniel if some scary looking dude approached me and said "give me all your money or I will throw this Dilaudid on you," I would probably keep my money.

@oxtail @Daniel

Since some people obtain Dilaudid illegally, its sale should be almost entirely unregulated.* I'm a law-abiding citizen, God damn it! Why, to demand that I have a prescription for Dilaudid is every bit as silly as instituting background checks for house paint, since some people get high huffing it.

@Daniel @oxtail erecting hurdles? For whom? law abiding citizens who want to be able to defend themselves?  Ha! We should erect hurdles to keep people from robbing or murdering. Perhaps a hurdle should be made that would require one to have a license in order to rob or kill someone, ..and if they don't it should be illegal. Hurdle Erection may sound like a stimulating argument but there are some people who don't give a rats ass about hurdles. Why make more hurdles for those that already follow the law?

@Daniel Right.  And the mindless classic response they have on auto-play: "Guns don't kill people............"

Daniel

@oxtail @Daniel I got that you were being sarcastic. I can be as dense as the next fella sometimes, but what I got from your comment was the standard off-the-rack reductio ad absurdum that's always trotted out by the gun people: If we erect extra hurdles to gun ownership, they we may as well do the same for knives, baseball bats, etc., because they can be used to kill people, too. It's a patently -- a breathtakingly -- stupid argument.

JustSaying
JustSaying

@CogitoErgoSum  That is the exact point that I will never understand. Gun laws will only effect people that respect the law. If you or anyone else thinks that stricter gun laws will keep a godamn criminal from having a gun, you are a fool plain and simple.

JustSaying
JustSaying

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz So are you saying that if you were attacked by a knife wielding assailant in an isolated location you would rather just use your lady hands as your only means of self protection? You are so anti-gun that you would not want a legal firearm on you to defend against an attacker with a knife? BULLSHIT. That's really easy to say from your couch.

@oxtail Amid all the gun madness, this lady showed that a person doesn't need a gun for self-defense.
