Update at 2:40 p.m.: WFAA's Rebecca Lopez reports that the victim is a Mexican national named Juan Guerrero Chapa believed to be working for a drug cartel.

The FBI, DEA, and Homeland Security are helping with the investigation according to WFAA.

Original post: People just don't get killed in Southlake. Police there last recorded a murder in 1999 and have seen two in the past 20 years. The Dallas Morning News gives the town a perfect 5.0 in its ranking of the area's safest neighborhoods. People especially don't get killed in Southlake in broad daylight at tony Southlake Town Square.

At least, they didn't until Wednesday evening, when a 43-year-old was gunned down in his Range Rover parked outside Victoria's Secret. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, a man, possibly wearing a mask, fired five or six shots from the passenger seat of a white SUV at about 6:45 p.m. The 43-year-old's wife, who was driving the Range Rover, wasn't hurt. The man hasn't yet been identified.

Shoppers were, predictably, shocked by the shooting.

"I'm very surprised, very shocked," one shopper, Rachel Fowle, told NBC 5. "It's very unsettling it would happen in the middle of the day in such a populated area."

"This is freakin' in our own backyard," another, Jacob Gullion, told the Morning News.

Southlake Police Chief Stephen Mylett told reporters that the incident has the hallmarks of a targeted killing. It's certainly nothing like either of Southlake's two most recent murders, which are recounted by the Star-Telegram:

In the earlier Southlake homicides, Dr. Scott C. Stone Jr. flew to Southlake in 1999 from North Carolina and ambushed his ex-wife, also a physician, while she was jogging. He then killed himself.

In 1994, Terence O'Regan stabbed his estranged wife because he was afraid that she would reveal his "penchant for cross-dressing," according to a Star-Telegram report. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Ah to be born with a golden spoon in your mouth, affluent for life , regardless but more crooked than the worst gang banger in South Dallas. Whah!

Clearly, the Range Rover is unsafe at any speed.

DMN recently reported on an increase in noted Cartel operations penetrating the metroplex, including suburban areas....

It was at least a "respectable" hit if there could be such a thing. They didn't target his wife or spray the area with machine gun fire, they hit exactly where they were aiming.

He was just trying to make a better life for himself. Clearly we need to end defacto amnesty and bring these people out of the shadows!

People don't just get killed in Southlake? Sure they do, it's no different from any other town or place. Granted, an increased crime rate is directly linked (statstically) to poverty and clearly there isn't much of that in affluent Southlake. Where there is people there will be crazy people, regardless of type of place they live. Is that why this is making headlines because it's Southlake? This stuff goes down 24/7 in some parts of Dallas and never once is it put on the news, just The First 48.

Phew!  He's Mexican, so no one has to give a shit.  I was worried there for a while.

In a nutshell: Major US security ops paradigm shift needed ASAP. Your own petty crims are not your enemies.

Well, we've been hearing how they've moved northward and it's a matter of time before you're hearing more of this... if something isn't done against the trend (refocus on outside threats moving in, please... and let our minor offenders off their nasty hooks).

you know dallas is home to all major cartels. i'm kind of surprised this hasn't happened more often.

His billable and unbillable hours to the Cartel were above the acceptable threshold. Guess his rates were too high to support his wife's lifestyle! Cant kiss and CarTell!

An Attorney named Juan Guerrero Chapa gunned down over Mexican Drug Cartel business?  Shocking!

Southlake has a town square?  That's just precious.  Did Pulte or KB Homes build that too?

My only request is that Mr Nicholson not let the story die and provide updates as information becomes available.  Bet it's going to be most interesting since no names are being released.

Virtually the same thing happened in front of Snuffer's on lower Greenville 7 or 8 years ago.Only the passenger killed, broad daylight,no shortage of witnesses, and the shooters disappear into thin  air. What you'll likely find here is he either owed the wrong people money or was cooperating with the gov't,And considering how quickly multiple agencies are jumping into the mix, this should be interesting.

Don't go feeling too safe out there in the burbs.  The City of Dallas has 10.87 murders per 100,000 people.  Southlake only has 27,000 residents -- heck, if they have another murder and 3/4, their murder rate is as high as Dallas.    It happens everywhere and too often who live in small towns have a false sense of security.

@MikeDunlap I know you hate the burbs, but they did a pretty nice job with their town square.  You know, people actually want to go there and shop and hang out and attend parades and fairs at it.  I make fun of Southlake as much as the next person but cmon now.

texpwr7529
texpwr7529

@ScottsMerkinno they prob won't.Whoever pulled the trigger is long gone by now.The order to kill and likely the gunmen themselves came from across the border. More interesting/concerning is why.Assassinating a long time employee in broad daylight on US soil is not the cartel's go-to move.

I really shouldn't have to clarify this for another adult, but here goes. The fact that I own a gun does not obligate me to shoot it at someone. Believe me, I've done far more damage to other people with my bare hands and feet.

FEDUP

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Guns DO NOT KILL PEOPLE MORON, people kill people with guns, knives, hammers, cars, baseball bats, etc etc etc. That gun did not drive itself to Southlake, load itself, and kill someone. ITS IMPOSSIBLE.

@James_the_P3 I wonder how a police department who hasn't investigated a murder since 1999, keeps up their murder analyzing skills? Watching Discovery ID? Setting up fake murders and testing out on it? Go to conferences? Do they have a homicide unit? Do they call in the Rangers? Just wonderin' that's all....

Daniel
Daniel

@James_the_P3  I say he was either up to his ass in some kind of organized criminal activity, or he fucked the wife of a man who was. Why would the wife (his wife) be driving the Range Rover and risk being wounded or killed herself? I mean, shooters are only so sharp.

observist
observist topcommenter

@James_the_P3  I thought that too, then I thought what a horrible thing to say if she didn't, and is in fact grieving the loss of her beloved husband.   So I came up with something else horrible to say.

James_the_P3
James_the_P3

@Daniel @James_the_P3 She had to drive to get the husband to the spot in the parking lot where she had prearranged for the hit to happen.  Telling a hitman to shoot the guy in the Range Rover in Southlake doesn't exactly give him a very precise target.  And you certainly don't want your beskimasked hit men driving around the Southlake Town Center looking for your license plate.  You have to tell the hitman, "we'll pull into a space in the fifth row at exactly 6:45" so that they can get in and get out quickly.

Her being in the car, and presumably somewhat in the line of fire, only helps with her deniability.  It really would have helped if she had actually been wounded.  As it is, you mean to tell me that two guys shot up a car and, in the hail of gunfire, somehow managed not even to graze the driver?  Cmon.

DirtyP1
DirtyP1

@James_the_P3 @Daniel It's one thing to theorize someone, let's say the wife putting a hit on the husband, it's another thing having to watch a person you once loved die in front of you and possibly be implicated in murder that would put you away for life. I just don't see that happening here, call me naive but I think you're going overboard on this.

The only question I have in regards to the wife, is why they didn't shoot her, she's a witness to this happening. In either case, I feel for her, that's going to be PTSD that isn't going to leave her thoughts for more than a few minutes the rest of her life.

@keeponkeepinitdown

didn't learn from being exposed for your previous bullshit did you?

Your comment "the unknown is more than likely black" is repeating the same bullshit as before.

logic and reason says that the "unknown" would follow generally along the percentages of known assailants. There is no valid basis to conclude there would be any change.

but then, logic and reason has never been shown to be in your repertoire....

keeponkeepinitdown
keeponkeepinitdown

@mavdog @keeponkeepinitdown The unknown is more than likely black. Or one of our other fine upstanding Obama voters such as the likely illegal immigrant shooter in this case. You know.. the ones that have a lower crime rate than citizens?

@keeponkeepinitdown

wow, for someone who believes that a little over 1/3 of a whole equates to "nearly all", coming up with the multiple was surprising.

clearly you must have used a calculator...or did you ask your mother?

keeponkeepinitdown

@mavdog Yeah and blacks make up what? 10-15% of the population? For every whitey that commits a murder, blackie needs to commit what-- 7?

for those who can't read/follow the chart that was linked to the post, second line down, the white %=32.5, black 37.7, and unknown 28.

@Daniel @keeponkeepinitdown @ScottsMerkin

3 murders in 19 years vs how many a day in Dallas? I'd say that qualifies as "doesn't happen here."

Nearly all homicide in the United States is committed by black males. In cities with high populations of black males. I know you love to lie to yourself and others and pretend that isn't the truth but it is.

It has nothing to do with affluence.. although affluence is generally a side effect of not being infested by violent murderous blacks. Low crime tends to increase property values after all.
