The Hearthwood Condominiums is a total loss at this point. The Northeast Dallas complex has been consumed in a massive, six-alarm fire that broke out there early this morning, bringing dozens of firetrucks to the intersection of Abrams and -- in a case of unfortunate irony -- Emberglow Lane.

Residents of the complex were reportedly all evacuated and are safe. The same can't be said of the men and women who came to fight the flames. One of those remains trapped, various media outlets are reporting. NBC 5's Kendra Lyn tweets that it's been more than an hour since the firefighter radioed "I'm trapped" before losing contact with his colleagues.

NBC 5 has live video Updates as they come.

Update at 6:26 a.m.Dallas Fire-Rescue provides a few more details via email.

The fire was reported just before 3 a.m. Fire crews arrived within minutes to find a large amount of smoke coming from the roof of the three-story building.

"An offensive fire attack was initially attempted, but the fire was growing too quickly and caused them to have to move out for a defensive attack," the email says.

Firefighters rescued at least five residents, one of whom was treated for minor smoke inhalation. They are attacking the fire from the breezeways in hopes of keeping it contained it to main building.

DFR says the situation "is still very fluid and things could easily change."

9:10 a.m.: WFAA's Rebecca Lopez is reporting that the firefighter has been located and carried out on a gurney. His fellow firefighters saluted as he was brought out. We don't yet have any word on his condition. The DMN's Christina Rosales says the scene is "very somber," with dozens of firefighters walking towards an ambulance "with what seems to be a body."

11:40 a.m.: The firefighter has been identified as Stanley Wilson, a 28-year veteran of the department who reportedly leaves behind a wife and two kids. His colleagues saluted his flag-draped stretcher as his body was carried away.

Out of curiosity I checked out these condos.  A 715 sq ft one-bedroom unit was listed at $20,000 with a $60 a month HOA fee.  That gets me to wondering what shape the building was in.  $20K for a condo in Dallas?  Seems awfully cheap.

This is just awful. absolutely terrible

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz They were built in 1980.  They were originally apartments and later converted to condos.  Sprinklers probably weren't required then and was I doubt if they would ever be retrofitted.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Firefighters dont care if its a 40 year old condo built like shit worth nothing or a brand new multi-million dollar condo tower, they will fight the fire, and unfortunately one lost his life today.  I fail to see what point you have in posting the info that you just did

@MaxNoDifference Scotty was being obstreperous, so I did not explain that many of these units are probably rented out by a slumlord that owns them and could very well be responsible for unsafe conditions.

@ScottsMerkin What does my comment have to do with the scolding you just gave me?  You must be a real dream to live with.  Sheesh!

@ScottsMerkin I don't have to answer you.  But I will.  My point is that a firefighter was killed (fortunately none of the residents) in a blaze that might not have gotten out of control if sprinklers were installed  (which should be the law), and slums like these are permitted to be fire traps that are bound to be the cause of many more firefighters' and residents' deaths.

Now, you may apologize for freaking out on me for no reason.

@ScottsMerkin Cat or not, if I were married to you and you spoke to me like that you'd be showing off a fat lip to your buddies.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz I was asking what the point of your comment was?  It seemed rather insensitive considering about 10 minutes b4 your comment we found out DFD lost a brother
