City of Dallas Looking for Someone to Turn its Feral Hog Problem Into Delicious Bacon

FeralHogJoppa.jpg

A feral hog near the Joppa neighborhood of southern Dallas.
In recent years, as North Texas' feral hog population has exploded, Arlington, Irving and other suburbs have taken to rounding up the swine and selling them for bacon.

Now, it's Dallas' turn.

Robert Wilonsky brings news this morning that the city is looking for someone to harvest its feral hogs.

The problem faced by the city is twofold: For one, feral hogs are a notorious pain in the ass and have been doing great damage on city-owned parkland along White Rock Creek, near the Trinity River Audubon Center, and in the vicinity of the Elm Fork Athletic Complex. DFW Urban Wildlife has a fairly extensive record of feral hog sightings.

And secondly? Those pigs are potentially delicious, a potential that is sadly unrealized so long as they remain on four hooves.

So whoever the city selects for the job will have to address both those things. The first, per the city's bid documents, will involve setting and baiting traps. The second will be accomplished by taking them to "a USDA approved meat processing company."

Now, before you grab your hunting rifle and hop into your helicopter for a city-sponsored pig slaughter, know that the city has very specific requirements for its hog harvester, the biggest of which being that the animals have to be treated humanely at all time. Also, everything is done through baited traps, meaning no guns.

Guess that means Ted Nugent is out.

I have seen a feral hog up close and personal on more than one occasion and they are the only good reason to keep AK-47's legal for hunting. These are not Wilbur's darker cousin. They are capable of becoming monster pigs able  to head butt a small truck right off a dirt track. I watched a feral momma hog beat the crap out of the bed of a Chevy S-10 with legs hog tied and snout duct taped.

And if you think those tusks are just for show, think again, they can gut a pit bulldog. And having feral pigs about is the only good reason to have pit bulls. Pigs reproduce at such an alarming rate, City of Dallas won't have time to treat them all humane like or they will be up and in the neighborhoods in no time. These are not the pigs from the petting zoo.

"All wild animals have the potential of being dangerous, especially when wounded or cornered. In a natural state, feral hogs will prefer to run and escape danger, and are not considered dangerous. Extreme caution should be maintained when tracking wounded animals, trapping animals or encountering females with young. Their razor sharp tusks combined with their lightning speed can cause serious injury."  --elusivewildlife.com

So there you have it.  The hysteria over the hogs is absurd, as you can read in this snippet from an expert on the subject.

The most efficient method of getting rid of feral hogs is to trap them.

And Europe will buy every one you trap.  They just got to be alive when you ship them.

But make no mistake about this - they are extremely dangerous when cornered.

It's an old truism if you want to make somebody disappear, feed 'em to the hogs.  They leave nothing and kick up the dirt where you were.

They will eat anything when they are hungry, even each other.

Our fair city will become properly outraged when a pack of these interlopers takes down a kid.  Dogs don't last very long at all, unless there is a big pack of 'em, and the inexperienced ones don't last.

The problem with these hogs is a lot bigger than the City understands.  I bet these are thousands in the flood plains of this town.  No known predators, they are slippery devils and usually come out only at night.  Fast as a horse, and they make a lot of noise communicating with each other.  They also carry Brucelosis, and LOTS of ticks.  But the young ones taste good.  The boars have scent glands.  Nasty.

The cats and I always cry when male lions are shown killing rivals' cubs.  This is one of the saddest things they show on Big Cat Diaries

Bullshit - if they want this done, they need to forget this treating natures most destructive nuisance humanely.  Call me when you're ready to put some 77grain HPBT's in the grapes of these monsters.

@TexMarine to turn them into bacon for sale they must be caught live and be delivered to the slaughter house alive.

@blakewilsontx What a nasty, cold attitude.  What if you were a baby hog who just had its mother slaughtered?  Shame on you.

Real hog hunters use a Bowie knife.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz If I could only post a photo for you to see what my nasty, cold 5.56 77 Grain HPBT did to the spine of a little piggy. Note to self - use a smaller grain for smaller pigs.  If I was on an eradication hunt, the piggies mother would be my primary target, but since I had to pay to hunt this last time, SOW's aren't allowed. :(

Then you make mighty fine eating.

@primi_timpano Who's talking about hunting? I'm talking about eradication. Real Hog eradicators use HPBT's.

@primi_timpano

Neither HP nor UP have a single ZIP code nor a "city" post office.

HP is covered by three ZIP codes, 75205, 75209 and 75219.  None of these post offices are in HP and are located in the City of Dallas.

UP is a similar situation.  It is served by three ZIP codes as well, 75225, 75205 and 75206.  None of these post offices are located in UP and are located in the City of Dallas.

Technically, there is no such address as "University Park, TX" or "Highland Park, TX" as there is not a post office in either city.  However, the USPS will deliver mail addressed to "University Park, TX" or "Highland Park, TX" as the sorting is done by ZIP code and not by city name.

The DPS does require that the address shown on the drivers license for residents of UP and HP show the respective city name as that is the residence location and would be needed for proper service in the event a warrant needs to be served for a traffic citation.

PS: Highland Park bills itself as a "Towne" on its city limits, err ... "Towne Limits" signs.

So do Park Cities residents put HP or UP on their drivers license and mailing address, or do they use Dallas?

@primi_timpano I've trapped, hunted from blinds, and used ATV's to root them out from their hiding spots; but I've never used dogs.

In my experience hogs are difficult to hunt, but I never used dogs (just blinds or a truck). They are stealthy.

@Squeazl @TexMarine Wow...what a well articulated and insightful response. May I ask how long it took for you to compose such a finely crafted response? When you typed that out, and right before you hit "post comment", did you feel a little queasy in your tummy? You should have followed instinct my stupid little friend.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @ScottsMerkin these feral hogs are not native & destroy millions of dollars worth of land/crops/etc. They'll attack too (people &domestic animals). They breed uncontrollably & need to eradicated. Best way to think of them is as though they are giant cockroaches.

@ScottsMerkin My heart mourns for feral animals who are mistreated.  The Bigfoot colonies are under assault from a meddling human nuisance and simply want to be left alone to live in peace.
