State Rep. Wants Nursing Moms to Be "Modest and Respectful," Inspires Facebook Backlash

Categories: Legislature

There are a couple of bills bouncing around the state Legislature now that would make it easier -- or, rather, make it harder to interfere with -- to breastfeed in public. We wrote about one of them, state Representative Jessica Farrar's HB 1706, which would allow women to sue if prevented from using their God-given assets to nurse their children. (By no means do we use "assets" in a derogatory or misogynistic fashion, since our nursing wife might castrate us if we did.)

But Representative Debbie Riddle, a Republican/Tea Partier from Tomball, isn't so fond of breasts. She's on the Business & Industry Committee, which considered the bill on Tuesday. As noted by the Texas Tribune, she took to Facebook to share her thoughts.

Now, I am all in favor of breast feeding -- however it is important for women to be modest while feeding their baby -- and most women are modest and respectful. But, a bill that would allow for law suits if one "interfered" with a woman breast feeding is really going a bit far. If a business owner objects to a woman who is not being modest then be fearful of a law suit is government out of control. Most of our laws and bills being considered for law would not be necessary if people would simply be considerate and thoughtful of others. Needless to say -- I am not supporting this bill.

The response thread -- or, you might say, backlash -- has now topped 1,000 comments.

"[W]hy dont YOU put a cover over your head while you eat, or eat in a restroom," one says. "Not very comfortable is it?"

And there's this: "I see you have an A+ rating from the NRA and you fully support our right to bear arms ... yet you do not support the right of mother's arms to bear their babies as they nurse freely in public without a cover and a trip to a dirty public bathroom. That says a lot about your priorities."

And this: "Idiot. Plain and simple."

Riddle's position, though, is not without its supporters, who have begun to chime in.

"come om women, you get offended if a man stares at your breasts so what would you think would happen if you all just started walking around with your breasts out.also this is not the miedevil days.there pumps to fill the baby bottles with at home.if you dearly need to feel your babie's lips against your tit then do it at home," a cultured gentleman named Reginald Holland wrote.

Clearly, Mr. Holland's argument won the day. Farrar's bill was left pending in committee.

Welcome to the USA, where people reserve the right to be the biggest prudes on the planet.  You call yourselves adults?

I am glad the Lege is tackling the great world problems.  I hope they can fix this, as well as the horrors of having to watch pet evacuations in public places.

How bout this, guys.  Let's volunteer for the County Health Dept. Nursing education program for new mothers.  We can teach them the joys of nursing, and throw in some techniques for discretion. My head an cover more than a baby's, so I an be more discreet...except for the sound effects.

I remember once, I saw woman breastfeeding (in park) and talking on her mobile phone (she had earphones). Her left breast was almost completely uncovered and when her baby stopped breastfeeding she didn`t care about her uncovered breast at all, she was talking on mobile like everything is normal. It took some 2 or 3 more minutes before she would cover her breast with her t-shirt...and no, she did`t have a bra ! Who ever thinks that this is OK should go to Africa....

Nursing in public is OK as long as no part of breasts is visible. Nursing can`t be excuse for any woman to expose her breast, PERIOD !

Many times, nursing in public is more discreet without a cover than with. FFS, it's just skin.

Only good-looking babes should be allowed to breast feed in public.

Coming from a mom that breastfed, personally, I don't really wanna see anybody's body parts in public be they lady boob or man boob. The reason it's an issue is because american people can't and won't separate the nature of breast feeding from the sexual nature of breasts and that won't change so just use a damn cover and stop pretending nudity shouldn't bother people because it bothers some which is just as much their right as it is for you to breastfeed in public. Compromise. Anyhooter.....

Oh boy are we in trouble ... now the legislature is trying to pass a bill that establishes a legal definition and basis for "considerate and thoughtful".

What will the penalties be for not being "considerate and thoughtful"?

The last time I was in an airport, a woman at our gate had a screaming baby. She pulled out her breast and started feeding, not covering up. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE SEEMED TO GIVE A CRAP. I don't even think half the people there noticed. Because, you know, grown ass adults and stuff.

You know who else wanted people to be modest and respectful?   Hitler.

She should be discrete about it and not be an exhibitionist.   No one wants to sit in a restaurant and watch Mommy whip out a tit and start squirting.   Cover your business up, already.

If women want to breast feed in public, that's fine. The bill should also protect perverts who want to watch dem titays.

I fully support breast feeding but I also fully support the idea that businesses should be able to run themselves and their locations as they see fit.  I wouldn't have a problem with a business wanting to enforce a policy of no eating in their establishment (this would apply at a place like Dillards or AE) and expanding that to include breastfeeding.  Yes this would be inconvenient for mothers who have a child that needs to eat immediately, but the mother could leave the establishment long enough to feed her child or she could spend her money at a business that is more accommodating to her needs.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Have you ever actually seen a breast feeding woman "whip out a tit and start squirting"?  This is a serious question.

While it's now been a few years, my wife lured me to La Leche League meetings with the promise that tits would be whipped out.  Never happened.  Just babies eating and Moms taking care of their children.  (And I hasten to add that I didn't believe my wife and went just to be supportive.)

All this is to say, I've been around more than my fair share of nursing mothers and I've never seen what you seem to suggest is common, i.e., lack of discretion.  I think it's a myth.  And based on your posts in the last breast feeding thread, I think you're not real up on the subject.  But I'll try to be open-minded if you care to show me I'm wrong and there are enough instances of exhibitionist tit-whipping by immodest breast feeders that it warrants your (and Rep. Riddle's) legitimate concern.

@teenaB I'm pretty sure "Dem Titays" was a documentary at Sundance this year.

@clifford.carpenter DART should enforce their no eating and no drinking policy.  Some people chomp on greasy, smelly food on the trains, and throw waste on the floor.  A bunch of pigs.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz yrnA,

What IS your problem with nursing?

I would think for anyone accustomed to combing through kitty litter for lumps and nuggets and sponging up hairballs and quivering puddles of cat barf, a glimpse of a baby at a human breast would be refreshingly wholesome. Why this near-hysterical response to Mother Nature? Could it be that behind that neo-liberal mask lies a seething mass of neuroses?

@joe.tone @teenaB Its companion piece, "Repub Titays," was pronounced DOA in early development -- it turned out that old white men don't have titays, or at least not titays that anyone wants to look at.

@bmarvel Bill.  William.  I would never deny that I'm a neurotic.  But, don't you think it a tish hypocritical of you to call me a neurotic when you freak out when someone uses the word "whilst"?  Hee hee, darling.
