Atheists Wish Local Pastors A Happy Easter the Only Way They Know How

god is dead good friday poster.jpg
Last year around Easter-time, local conservative talking head and life-sized Cabbage Patch doll Ben Ferguson was upset with the Dallas Fort-Worth Coalition of Reason, our local band of godless heathen sodomites. He was unhappy that they'd chosen Easter for their newest ad campaign, the theme of which was "Our Families Are Great Without Religion." (He wasn't the only one who got upset; as you might recall, a couple of movie theaters also refused to show the ad.)

This year, DFWCOR is wishing their Christian friends a joyous Good Friday the only way they know how: with the cheery graphic you see above.

"Last year, Ben Ferguson of WBAP criticized the Dallas-Fort Worth Coalition of Reason's campaign for showcasing our many atheist families in the Metroplex during the Easter season," Zach Moore writes, DFWCOR's coordinator and media point person. "This year, we decided to take his advice and send out a message of celebration and collaboration. The following message has been sent out to local pastors, including Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Church Dallas, and will be promoted on our website throughout the Easter holiday."

In a press release, DFWCOR insists their best wishes are genuine (and that the poster isn't, say, cheerful, shameless, pastel-colored trolling).

"[W]ithout the death of Jesus as God, atonement within Christian theology would be impossible," Moore writes. "So great is this event, that Christians around the world commemorate it as 'Good Friday.' On this point, we can hopefully find no small level of agreement.

"The death of God is of incredible significance for those who have moved beyond traditional religious beliefs and practices, and seek now to advance a humanistic ethic in a world where we have no benevolent deities to beg for blessings, nor tyrant gods to blame for miseries."

As Christians find joy in "the sacrifice of the figure of Christ Jesus," Moore adds, "your Humanist siblings are likewise jubilant at the death of God, and we embrace the necessity of sacrifice from one for each other, in the interest of advancing a human-centered ethic that benefits us all."

We're sure everybody appreciates the sentiment, guys.

Ya know... sometimes trolling is useful. Sometimes it works. Ridicule can be an effective tool. I think in this case it is. It's in your face. People notice it, stop. Some laugh, because the juxtaposition of the bright happy colors against the message is jarring. Then they think harder... maybe realize this is something Nietzsche said. And then go about their day. Maybe they think about it later and change their opinion slightly. Maybe not.

It might not change your mind. It might not make you think... but if it makes somebody think, then it's done it's job.

I'm an atheist and I don't get the trolling and grouping up....I would never go to an atheist meetup for fear they would ask me for money and then skim off the top like the other group that asks for money and skims off the top

Thanks for the explanation.  I had to read it a few times to comprehend it but appreciate you putting it in as laymen's terms as possible.  I had never heard of the Jains but appreciate the non violence approach.

God is not dead. God is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient. Therefore, He never has been dead nor will be. The Bible says in Gen 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1)." It also says in 2 Corinthians 5:21,"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Even the most recited verse by most Christians says,"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). You see God's son, Jesus--perfect and without sin, acted as the sacrifice. I'm sorry you don't understand this but even Jesus himself said “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways (Isaiah 55:8).” Philippians 2:8-11 says, "Christ humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father." So you might as well get ready, Atheists, Buddhists, Muslims, everyone, because a day is coming when you will confess Christ as Lord!

Why would an Atheist say God is dead if they don't believe God is real?

God must exist to be dead. Learn what you believe atheists. You're sounding like Westboro.

Hope all of you Xtians enjoy your co-opted pagan traditions, like the Easter Bunny (a pagan fertility symbol ) and Easter Eggs (a Polish tradition, from a more heathen time I believe). And remember: Tomorrow, Zombie Jesus rises from the grave TO EAT YOUR BRAINS!

Happy Easter ^,^

Totally get the trolling going on here.

But, as a very devout Christian, the atheist douchebags behind the trolling actually got this one right. I really like the juxtaposition.

@kedwards0731 how do you explain evil in the world?  An all loving, all knowing and all powerful God wouldn't allow such evil to exist would he?

kedwards0731
kedwards0731

@JackJett, why would God not believe in atheists? He created them just as he created you and I. He however gave everyone a freewill to chose the way to believe, think, feel, and act. He didn't want robots inhabiting the Earth! Therefore, as a Christian I do care what Atheists think because otherwise they are doomed for Hell. But as I stated in my post A DAY IS COMING WHEN EVERYONE WILL CONFESS CHRIST AS LORD!

@lostprophyt Mark Christ out of Christian, Christmas and every other religious holiday you please. And for your information some Christians do not celebrate Easter with the Easter Bunny or Christmas with Santa Clause. Some do and they do it all in fun but recognize the real meaning for the celebration. Most Christians also alter the meaning of the Eggs and the Bunny to symbolize Christian principles and foundational concepts. You are right about the fertility (however, as Christians we are taught to be fruitful and multiply, this could also symbolize the fertile crops that are sewn this time of year) and the eggs symbolize new life which we use to symbolize the resurrection of Christ (whole and complete--not a Zombie).

@dallas.l.may Your bible says god is immutable.  So, then god CAN'T die.  God CAN'T be a man.  The JEWS are waiting on the Messiah, but they're not ever planning on worshiping the Messiah as God.   The prophecies are that Jesus is the Messiah, to claim that the Messiah is God is blasphemy and heresy.  So, explain this Trinity to us?

@JackJett

Sorry, not buying.  Just because you assign people to Christianity, doesn't make it so.  We are all flawed, and some are just plain nuts.  Every group has them.  Enjoy your Sunday, sorry about all the Christians clogging  up Brunch for you.  It will be back to normal next week.

d-may
d-may

@kedwards0731 No, sorry, but you are wrong on both accounts. Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, Moses, Elisha, Nathan, and many others called people names. That's one of the very few things the Law doesn't speak against.

Second, and much more importantly, if God didn't die, there is no salvation. "The wages of sin is death". Something had to die and take mans place. God gave himself as the ultimate and final sacrifice. God died on Good Friday. That's the whole point of the gospels.

d-may
d-may

@scottindallas @dallas.l.may The most simple answer to your trolling comment is that GOD is not immutable, and I don't think the Bible uses that language to describe him. In fact, there are lots of examples in the Bible where God apparently changes his mind.

Keep trolling.

Who did I assign christianity?  Agree with you about flawed nuts.  The only things I see christians clogging is each other.  Not eggsactly sure what you mean about brunch but I know in celebration of easter...you can find free eggs in the grass all over America today.  Eggciting huh?

@dallas.l.may God can't die.  The infinite is finite?  Soren Kierkegaard actually argued that the Trinity was such a logical absurdity that it makes it's believers free.  That's not good logic, but I get his point.  You're arguing too literally to make any sense, cause there's no basis in your beliefs.  They run counter to the claims of Jesus, the man who never claimed to be God, and never asked anyone to worship him.  And, if he had, then the Jews were law bound to kill him.  So, did the Jews kill Jesus?   You've so altered and manipulated the orthodoxy your story can't be kept straight or consistent.

PaulBurrough

@scottindallas @dallas.l.may

The most/moster/mostest simple answer is that a triune Christian God is the creation of a sun-worshipping emperor named Constantine. God/Christ/Holy Spirit were not accepted as one magical entity until after the First Council of Nicaea. The Holy Trinity is a false doctrine that - if it were true -  would completely nullify the ransom sacrifice. There is God, there is Christ, and there is the Holy Spirit (aka God's "active force"). This is what the bible consistently says. There is nothing scripturally that would indicate otherwise. It was the idea of a savvy politician. At some point, it become irrefutable propriety to many.

scottindallas
scottindallas topcommenter

@dallas.l.may @scottindallas the Bible certainly is not consistent.  but, it indeed makes the claims I suggest.  Of the many contradictory things found in the Bible, the one thing you won't find there is any advocacy for or explanation of the heretical notion of the Trinity.  That comes after the Bible was canonized and was the doing of a North African general, Constantine.
