A Dallas Lawmaker Wants to Turn Central into George W. Bush Expressway

Thumbnail image for central_mockingbird.jpg
It took nearly six years after leaving office for George H.W. Bush to have a functioning North Texas highway named for him. His son could do it in less than five.

State Representative Dan Branch has taken it upon himself to see that that happens. On Friday, just before the filing deadline for the legislature's 2013 session, the Dallas Republican filed a bill that would rename a seven-mile stretch of U.S. 75 as President George W. Bush Expressway.

The appellation would be fitting in that the stretch of Central in question passes mere feet from the soon-to-be-inaugurated Bush Presidential Center and maybe three miles from the former president's Daria Drive abode.

But the potential for confusion shouldn't be ignored, though. Bush Expressway would run parallel to the new Bush Avenue, and travelers directed to take the George Bush would have to puzzle over where to go. The simplest workaround would be to refer to the road much as people came to refer to president himself: as The W.

Or lawmakers could ignore Branch's proposal, which would make the name change official on September 1, and we can all keep calling it Central.

I think its a crime to have to pay a toll to drive on roads. We already pay taxes for roads.

How bout Kinky Expressway (after Kinky Friedman)? Then you could say, "Take the High five over to the Kinky, go south, and get off on Lovers Lane.

This is such a wasted effort with the cost that goes into new signage, updating mapsco, reference material TEXDOT docs, business along that section would need to update their letterhead etc.  It is Central Expressway, dont break what is fixed!  The money would be better spent for the spelunking potholes all over the city.

Maybe we should change the name of LBJ since he made poverty permanent.  Or we could just stop acting like children, realize that these guys were Presidents from Texas and will be honored by a few schools or roads, and move on to something important.

I can see the reference...  Central is generally slow interspersed with violence and flames.

How about Dan Branch names his crank GW, his testes Chaney and Rumsfeld, and his butt hole Rove? Then he can have a love fest with the whole administration, ,,, all by himself.

Please dear God no...  Maybe the old Central that was small and ineffective.  Seriously, is this done exclusively at the state level?  I am sure if our fair blue city has a say, this will not become a reality.

We can call one Big Bush and the other Lil Bush.

The dead vegetation in the median would exemplify the former president's environmental policies.

Hey Dan......the taxpayers payed for 75.  You didn't.  I would suggest you ask our permission first.  I'm sure all the Democrats who live  in that 7 mile stretch might have a suggestion or two for you. And the taxpayers will also have to pay for the ridiculous  expense of creating and changing all those signs.  Waste.   As for me, no matter what you do I'll still call it 75 or Central.

Anything related to Bush is an embarrassment and travesty.  That includes the ridiculous library at my alma mater SMU.   Bush should be in prison not having a highway named after him.  Idiots.

If they do call it the GWB Expressway they should include indefinite detentions and warrantless searches on the side of the road. Then it would be truly fitting of his name.

Fuck a bunch of that! This may be the first cause my lazy ass stands up for. It is bad enough that he lives here.

This needs to be done so that we can name the intersection of Bush Freeway and Bush Tollway - THE SCISSOR!

If I was a right winger, I'd play colonial Williamsburg dress up and get out there carrying a sign with big words I don't understand on it and protest the waste of tax payer dollars going to Dan Branch's ass kissing.

The irony here is that the Bush family likes to hold themselves out as conservative - opposed to spending a lot of money on vanity projects that perform no function.

You mean the freeway that runs past the GWB Ego building---the one with the Temple to Athena on top? Well, why not? Why not re-name Dallas "W" Or The Big W?

"...that would rename a seven-mile stretch of U.S. 75 as President George W. Bush Expressway... the stretch of Central in question passes mere feet from the soon-to-be-inaugurated Bush Presidential Center..."

Considering Mockingbird is nearly 13 miles from the GB Tollway, I really don't see the potential confusion of two roads with a common name that won't intersect (75 would not be named GB Expressway at the point it intersects with the GB Tollway).  We already function, pretty easily I might add, with three roads (Belt Line, 635, NW Hwy) that have multiple names and wrap the area in multiple municipalities.  All that said, I think it's a stupid idea.

I never understood this Texas fetish with naming public facilities after LIVING people anyway. That should be reserved as a posthumous honor. JMO. That aside, I'm with the anti-confusion folks - keep it Central. That way I know to stay off it. LOL

if you ever been to another country and tell someone you're from Texas they automatically don't like you because everyone hates bush. Why does Texas think this dumbass a such a claim to fame

scottindallas

or, they could simply rename 75 to "43"

@jhard good point.  Let them rename North Central, through Plano and McKinney the Bush, those are the idiots who voted for him 4 times.  The City of Dallas is blue, remember?

@Realization

The Bush family isn't pushing this.  I doubt that GWB cares one bit about re-naming a highway.  Of course we had to rename a street Cesar Chavez, regardless of the cost.

@MikeyLikesIt Ohhh....and the choice was not his, rather it was that  of Carl Rove who flipped the political party of then Democrat Rick Perry and rallied the Christian right to support a "home grown" Texas boy in Bush.

@Americano I think you are missing the point. Dallas has already paid homage to the family in many ways. The duplication of efforts and the added general confusion associated with this idea are over the top. Texas is a big place. Im sure there are many other willing locations for Mr Bush to have his name put on a sign.
