Tim Tebow Cancels Dallas Speech, Discovers that Anti-Gay Megachurches Are Controversial

It's no secret that First Baptist Church of Dallas' pastor, Robert Jeffress is a lightning rod for controversy because of his less-than-PC remarks on homosexuality. And Mormonism. And Islam.

But it seems that Tim Tebow, who was scheduled to appear at the local megachurch as part of the grand opening of its $130 million expansion, just got the memo.

In a series of Tweets, Tebow announced this morning that he will not, in fact, be visiting First Baptist.

"While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ's unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance," he wrote. "I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day."

That's all very vague, but one imagines it might have had something to do with headlines like this one from the Huffington Post: "Tim Tebow, Jets Quarterback, To Speak At Virulently Anti-Gay, Anti-Semitic Church First Baptist Dallas.

That doesn't mesh so well with the whole message of "unconditional love."

Smart move. If he never got that memo he would of still went. Tim Tebow needs to worry about if ANY team is going to pick him up. This is a new era. If man/man and women/women want to get married thats their business. Worry about if you still have a football career instead of preaching what you think is wrong.

The Obscene Device Law is a Texas statute dealing with obscenity. In 1973, the Texas Legislature passed Section 43.21 of the Texas Penal Code which, in part, prohibited the sale or promotion of ""Obscene device[s]" mean[ing] a device including a dildo or artificial vagina, designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs."hey look at this I found on Wikipedia;

I think Timmy's cancellation probably has something to do with appearing on the cover of GQ.

Good!  Jeffress's First Church of Hate is a disgrace and an embarrassment to the city.

I kind of hate the your either with us or against us mentality. I see a lot if people on Facebook criticizing him for the cancellation. Probably the same amount of people who bitched that he was doing it in the first place. I seriously doubt he caved to pressure. I think that either he did not want his message lost in the spectacle, or may he didn't want to get lost in the spectacle, or possibly said that he was too busy to deal with the controversy.

Since he has not said what this "new information" was, we do not know WHY he cancelled his appearance.  Without knowing WHY he cancelled, how can one assume that he did it for a "good" reason.  This would be a good time for him to further his message of Christian love and to offer a lesson on what Christian love should include and what Christian love should exclude, but as long as he is silent on the WHY, we just do not know.

I am quite shocked by his behavior.  I must admit, I am impressed with such a mature decision.  First Baptist has a history of belching out hatred disguised as "Christian Love."  Nothing could be further from the truth.  When a Pastard stirs the pot of hatred, then the first thing that comes to mind is, "who is in the closet?"  When I was in Austin, Texas, I saw a great shirt.  It said, "Some of my best fucks were with homophobes."  "Reaction Formation" is a defense mechanism some people use to deal with their hidden desires, unsavory to their conscious mind.  In essence, they sometimes act like zealots on a mission from God to rid the earth of pornography, premarital sex, and/or like-gendered individuals.  In actuality, their cheeks may be too full to speak.  What a perfect storm.

If they ever get caught down on their knees, all they have to do is repent.  Haggard, Swaggart, & Baker have been down this road.  Yet, the congregation forgives them.  I wonder, WWJD?  If the Pastards and congregants say they love the sinner, but hate the sin, why don't any of these Churches have homosexual missionaries or missions?

I can assure you Christ would be no stranger to this population if he lived in this day and age.  Here is another question.  Why do Christians seem to hyper-focus on one "abomination" when there are many others, mostly ignored.  Yes, most of the abominations occur in the Old Testament.  If people are following Christ, are they dipping into the Old Testament to do enforce the New Covenant?

I will not resort to attacks on others' opinions whom i don't know, but I will say that even though I don't care for Tim Tebow, I do like that he chose to stay away from that place. Good for him.

I think he should go and speak there anyway. You should always go where you are most needed. This church is experiencing a lack in morals crisis, and needs someone who truly speaks the message to come in. Their pastor certainly isn't doing his job correctly, and clearly needs someone to show him the way.

Lori-you are an idiot of the highest order. He does admirable things for needy children on a daily basis. I'd love to know what you've ever done that amounts to anything at all.

Good for Tebow. A fresh contrast to those like Diabe Rehm, who appeared in town at the Dallas Country Club.

I'm sure that the good pastor and his "business associate Benji"are very disappointed with the cancellation of this event and the opportunity to mingle with other NFL players.

@deehue379Texas has a very strange "penile" code, pun intended.

(g)  It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this section that the person who possesses or promotes material or a device proscribed by this section does so for a bona fide medical, psychiatric, judicial, legislative, or law enforcement purpose.

DeathBreath

@deehue379 No it isn't.  You can buy them through the internet.  At one point in time, there was a document that you had to provide the store showing it was for medical and/or psychological intervention.  With the medical/psychological form, the said device cost significantly more.  Here is the irony.  Unless things have changed in Oklahoma, you cannot receive XXX movies in the mail or buy them in a store.  However, you can visit many dildo farms.  The last time I visited a sex shop, there were dildo devices present on the shelf.  These on not behind the counter.

@Bobtex

Question: What time is it? Response: Where?

 We don't know why he cancelled. He cited new information. I assume he learned some facts about prior statements made by the leader of First Baptist Dallas, and Tebow decided Jeffress' fundamentalist ideology is inconsistent with Tebow's beliefs.

DeathBreath
DeathBreath

@DeathBreath  Yes, I am well aware of that; however, when the WWJD was presented, it was a hypothetical construct, not a statement of reality.  I hear the fellow died some time back.  So, all people can do is assume how he would have behaved in the presence of homosexuals.  I am sure there were like-gendered individuals in his presence while he was alive.  Then again, we really don't know since it is not mentioned.  It is pure speculation.  On the other hand, some Chistards make it their mission to wipe the earth clean, so to speak.  I believe the Bible mentions around 60 abominations, most of which occur in the Old Testament.

@primi_timpano Are you comparing Tebow to NPR soothsayer Diane Rehm? I'm not sure I understand the comparison other than like Tebow, Rehm would not come within a mile of a speaking engagement like this.

If this is meant as a dig to Rehm, I'm a little flummoxed. Ms. Rehm is one of the calmest and studied interviewers even when discussions involve controversial guests. I couldn't think of a more level-headed person.

Now a Jeffress vs. Rehm showdown would be the ticket.

@OakParkStudio @primi_timpano Diane seldom tells us who is funding her guests.  She's compromised her show and positions over the last decade.  Further, her loyalty to Cokie Robert's husband Steve is disgusting.  He was unwittingly on air, can be heard thumbing through "some 40 or 50 anti-Israel e-mails" when discussing terrorism in the Middle East.  Steve went on to read e-mails and take calls, none of which expressed views challenging Israel.

So, if anything, Diane is overly protective of Israel, she has many Jewish guests and hosts.

I like her, too, but a public appearance at the DCC, which has a dearth of minorities and Jews, was a tacit endorsement of the club and its policies.
