Robert Jeffress, First Baptist Pastor and Paragon of Manliness, Called Tim Tebow a Wimp

Just when you thought Robert Jeffress was going to let his jilting at the hands of Tim Tebow slip away, forgotten, after just one news cycle, the First Baptist mega-pastor took to the pulpit on Sunday and questioned the quarterback's manhood.

"I am grateful for men of God like these who are willing to stand up and act like men rather than wimping out when it gets a little controversial and an inconvenient thing to stand for the truth," he said. "God bless men like that."

He was referring, of course, to Tebow's discovery of "new information" that prompted him to publicly cancel a planned Easter Sunday visit after every media outlet everywhere reminded him of Jeffress' views on homosexuality.

The insult was oblique enough to elicit mushy headlines in the style of "Did Pastor Robert Jeffress Slam Tim Tebow for 'Wimping Out?'" but, really, whom else would he be talking about in a YouTube clip posted by First Baptist with the title "Dr. Jeffress Responds to Tebow Controversy"

Of course, there's something deliciously ironic about Jeffress, a twig of a man who may or may not be able to bench press a dandelion, calling out Tebow, who, whatever his flaws as a quarterback, is a ridiculous physical specimen, for weakness. This is apparently meant in a purely spiritual sense, but we don't think that should stop them from settling things with a mixed martial arts cage match.

Robert Jeffress needs to die and go to hell.  I can't stand people like this.  It's people like him that bring society down because most people (not on the Observer, of course ;-)) can't think for themselves and look to people like him for guidance.  Sickening....

Did First Babtist ever get rid of Jack,  Pastor Criswell's "longtime companion"?   An 'investment specialist,  non-preacher,  had an office next to Wally A's,   "never married."  Last I heard he was still there.

Cut Jeffress some slack.  The poor man has to get the blue-haired old women he has left to cough up $150 mil to cover his decision to stay downtown.   Only way he can do that is to convince 'em the Ol' Debbil' is at the door,  they're under siege.

I thought gay or not gay was a BaD radio segment

I still think he looks like he has a black play-dough pancake on his head in that first picture.

Also, that speech was nauseating, self-glorifying and narcissistic.

Hey, nice fag jokes from the buggery & bastardy brigade.  And slinging around accusations of homosexuality  like it was a shameful thing.  Almost like you all know it IS shameful and your real thoughts on the matter come to the fore when folk like Jeffress speak truth.

He's a closet case, but you people are worse with your hateful gay jokes.

In listening to "Pastor" (and I use that term loosely) Jeffress' voice and mannerisms I have to think that the man has a few Gay porn mags hidden in his office and maybe an outing by an "intimate" friend in his future. Just my guess.........

I love it when Jebus-loving folks try to "out-Jebus" each other. It's like two emperors with no clothes criticizing each other's style choices.

You are confusing manliness with predatoriness.  Jeffress is not manly; he is a predator who feeds on others for his own benefit.

What a fucking idiot you are. Look up the word "comprehension".

@roo_ster OK, I'll try to explain it to you.  They're making fun of his stereotypically gay tendencies as a way of pointing out his hypocrisy.  You would have to understand the strong correlation between vehement anti-gay statements and secretly gay tendencies. It's not that there's shame in being gay, it's that HE feels shame in being gay - see the difference?  Speaking of which, you've made some pretty vehement anti-gay statements around here...

@roo_ster These commenters announce their homophobia loud and clear with tired old jokes about lisping.  They really ought to get to know some gay men, especially some who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Myrna, crazy cat lady of blogdom, you haven't a fucking clue about hateful gay jokes.

I'm a hateful gay. I tell jokes. They aren't the same thing.

The hypocrites in church and Congress must be brought down. If some little rest stop cocksucker wants to stand in front of a roomful of hateful assholes and preach hate, then I'll say whatever the fuck I want about her.

@darrd2010 It's his voice that really does it. Listen to the way he pronounces the letter "s." Hint: it's a Blazing Saddles joke at 0:50.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @roo_ster I'm gay and it's just pointing out what's staring everyone in the face. Also, it's not a lisp but a pronounced sibilant.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @observist Actually, I was replying to you in my first post.  You were staking out the humorless PC position, which is "you shouldn't make fun of gay stereotypes under any circumstances whatsoever".  Daniel said what I meant much more effectively.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz ...does the fact that Monte is openly gay slow down your finger-wagging at all?

Did you ever see the Chapelle skit where he plays the blind black KKK leader?   If some black people were to taunt that guy by offering him fried chicken and watermelon, would you call them racist?  Would you suggest they don't know REAL black people?

Daniel, no one has enjoyed having laughs with gay friends as much as I've had as a hag for over 60 years, so lose the lecture.  My reaction was borne of contempt for people like some commenters below who use very dated shtick like lisping jokes to be funny because that's what they think of when they think "gay men".

Your own reference to Babs, theater, and interior decorating give you away as patronizing and clueless.  Hang out with me at JR's some time and get to know REAL gay people.

@Daniel @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz The other thing, which is important to point out here, is context. Jeffress is a powerful person who uses his position to try and make the lives of gay people miserable. The jokes flip this on its head, and take Jeffress's power away. And comedy works when it's targeted upwards at powerful people, like Jeffress or Benedict XVI, not downwards at ordinary people.

Remember Ted Haggard? A lot of people knew he was gay. Though I thought the jokes at his expense after he was exposed were in poor taste. But at that point he had lost his power.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @observist

Many gay people I've known have made benign (not hateful or crude) gay jokes all the time.  e.g. mildly self-mocking references to Barbra Streisand, musical theater, home decor, etc. In fact, lots of people from all walks of life can make a little fun of themselves, even trotting out a cultural stereotype or two for yucks. You see, they're part of the small subset of humans that don't take themselves too seriously. You should really try it sometime, Myrna, it's a gas!

Myrna.Minkoff-Katz
Myrna.Minkoff-Katz topcommenter

@DMZ3 I don't know anyone who is gay that would mock gay people as lispers and limpwrists.  If you're really gay, you're a disgrace.
