A Dallas Woman Shot at Her Husband as He Held Their 3-Month-Old Child Yesterday

Shuntarrary Blaylock
Yesterday afternoon, at the mobile home they share on Lawson Road in the Rylie neighborhood of Dallas, 52-year-old Warren Miller and his wife began to argue. At issue, police say, was $20 that had been left in the living room.

The argument escalated into something more serious when police say the woman, 34-year-old Shuntarrary Blaylock, ran into the bedroom and returned screaming curse words and holding a Black Talon .380 pistol.

Miller, fearing his wife was about to shoot, grabbed their 3-month-old child from the baby carrier and ran into the parking lot of the trailer park. Blaylock was close behind, keeping the gun trained on Miller. As he tried to hide behind a truck, Blaylock fired twice, narrowly missing them.

Miller flagged down responding officers in the parking lot and told them what had happened and that "I can't believe she missed me and my baby."

They found Blaylock sitting calmly in the mobile home. Her account of things was simple: "I shot at him because he was trying to take my baby."

She directed officers to the gun, which she had stowed back under her mattress, and explained that she does have a concealed handgun license. ("They told us to fire a warning shot," she told police, referring to her CHL training. She apparently missed the day about not firing at one's husband and infant child.)

Blaylock was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and knowingly injuring a child. She's in Dallas County Jail with a $30,000 bond. All this just three months after the couple wedded in a ceremony at Methodist Hospital, according to Facebook.

Her name is probably the only 4 syllable word she knows.

Granted, assuming that is 4 syllables is quite an assumption. I don't speak bushmeat.

I'd be fine with absolutely no limits on gun ownership if people just had to have a license to have children.

If her CHL instructor told her to fire warning shots, they should both be in jail.  CHL instructors do NOT tell you to fire warning shots.  They tell you NOT to fire warning shots.  You don't even present the weapon until you are ready to fire it, and then you fire to stop the threat.  That means shooting the mortal threat until it is no longer threatening.  Warning shots are always the wrong thing.

Is that a picture of the husband or the wife?

FYI, Eric, a quick check shows that "Black Talon" is a type of ammunition, not a brand of pistol.

A Talon is a brand of pistol, an inexpensive one bordering on a "Saturday Night Special".  Perhaps you meant a "black Talon .380 pistol" instead of a "Black Talon .380 pistol".

@everlastingphelps We only have her word(by way of Eric Nicholson, who is always accurate) that she has a CHL. Does she seem like a trustworthy person?

@everlastingphelps What do the CHL instructors tell you to do when you ARE the mortal threat and person is running away from you?  That's really the more likely scenario.

You are a self proclaimed "smart guy", don't you think she was probably lying?

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul Eric never makes mistakes. Especially when it comes to a subject he is knowledgeable on such as guns. He must be knowledgeable about the subject considering how often he writes about it, right?

everlastingphelps

@blowmetone That's pretty much my point.  I would really like to see what the actual police report says.  The lies the cops put in there are likely to be much more objective.

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@observist @everlastingphelps No, it isn't.  CHL holders, by definition, are people who have squeaky clean criminal records.  The statistics have shown that they continue to be MORE law abiding than the general public after they are licensed.

Do you have ANYTHING that didn't come out of your own ass to back up your "more likely scenario?"

ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul

@observist @ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul I was trying to figure out what type of handgun was used as semi-automatics tend to be more expensive than revolvers and a 380 is a relatively large round as handguns go.  In my search this is where I found the difference between "Black Talon" and "black Talon".

In journalism, it is my understanding that this is called fact checking.

It turns out that the Talon handgun is a "Saturday Night Special" POS.

@observist @everlastingphelps Right outlined in the Constitution are outlines there because they are endowed upon everyone by their creator.  The "good of the country" doesn't matter.

I believe that the rights of the minority outweigh the "good of the country", and there is no smaller minority than the individual.  The "good of the country" is the justification for every tyrant and dictator in history.  You've just justified Fascist Italy, congratulations.

@everlastingphelps@observist

First, I'm pretty sure at some point you mentioned working for a law firm.  Am I wrong about that?  Would only a liberal mistakenly think that someone who works for a law firm is a lawyer?  Anyway, it's disappointing that just as you come to the brink of an intellectually honest conversation, you pull back into sad baseless generalizations about liberals.

Second, sigh, yes, that's the cultural literacy part.  You don't have to say "falsely yelling fire in a crowded theatre" it's a given.  Just like if you mention Shakespeare you don't have to specify William

Last, regarding your comment "I don't care if a million people a year are murdered with guns - it doesn't give the state the justification to abridge the rights of people who are not murderers".

With that statement you've shown that you've lost perspective of what "rights" are for - you've basically come out of the closet as a sociopath.  Rights outlined in the Constitution are for the good of the country and its people, and by saying that, you've admitted that a million fellow citizens aren't as important to you as your guns. If that's really what you believe, you're a seriously fucking sick bastard.

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@observist I don't care if a million people a year are murdered with guns -- it doesn't give the state the justification to abridge the rights of people who are not murderers.

How many people do I need to murder before it becomes acceptable to take away YOUR right to free speech?  Do you have any suggestions on how to reduce the misuse of the press other than giving soapboxes to more people in more places?

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@observist @everlastingphelps First, I'm not a lawyer.  You liberals are all about that -- assuming things about people so you can slot them into categories and identies, and you are usually wrong about something key.

I'm very familiar with the analogy.  The SCOTUS has rejected it along with other forms of prior restraint.  Even there, it's key that it has to be a FALSE yelling of fire -- if the theater is actually on fire, you are entirely in your rights to yell fire.  The equivalent in the analogy would be when someone actually is threatened and needs a firearm to protect themselves.

observist
observist topcommenter

@everlastingphelps  The problem with all the analogies is that none of them pertain to rights that are misused 90%% of the time, resulting in death, robbery, assault, etc.   So, I'll ask again - are you fine with the fact that 11,000 people are murdered with guns every year?  Do you have any suggestions on how to reduce the misuse of guns, other than arming more people in more places?

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@observist @everlastingphelps @blowmetone you aren't asking to ban yelling fire in a theater. You're asking for everyone's mouth to be sewn shut because some people he'll fire in theaters. The gun equivalent of yelling fire in a theater is murder, which Is already illegal. You've "won" that one.

To top it all off, you are ignoring all the times people yelled fire in a theater because the theater was actually on fire, and lumping them in with the criminals.

blowmetone
blowmetone

@observist @everlastingphelps @blowmetone The right to free speech is just as dangerous as bearing arms.

Why else would they be so rare throughout history and across the globe?

Why else are they usually the first victims of tyranny?

But that is what you want-- control. You want to control the speech.

observist
observist topcommenter

@everlastingphelps @observist @blowmetone  11,000 gun murders a year is a far worse infringement of the victims' right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness than gun control is of RKBA,  I find the current RKBA absolutism akin to free speech advocates defending the right to yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.  Does it not bother you that so many people are killed with guns?  Do you have any suggestions on how to keeps guns out of the hands of bad guys?  Or is your only proposed solution more guns in the hands of more people in more places?

everlastingphelps
everlastingphelps topcommenter

@observist @blowmetone @everlastingphelps How can the abuse of a right be used as a justification to take it from someone else?  You're talking prior restraint.  We would never accept that for speech or religion, why should we accept it for RKBA?

blowmetone
blowmetone

@observist @everlastingphelps @blowmetone

On average in 1987-92 about 83,000 crime victims per year used a

firearm to defend themselves or their property. Three-fourths of the victims who used a firearm for defense did so during a violent crime; a fourth, during a theft, household burglary, or motor vehicle theft.

"3 times as many wives and girlfriends are killed by their husbands and boyfriends than felons killed by citizens defending themselves. "
Most self defense situations where a firearm is used-- the mere display of the firearm ends the encounter without even a single shot fired by the victim.

"

Don't be afraid, we already know you are a race baiter.  Let me rejoin:

@everlastingphelps @observist @blowmetone   Going by the literal interpretation of "Obama voters" perhaps not, but again, everyone here including yourself knows what the troll means by "Obama voters".

This is all an aside to the main point that guns are far, far, more often used for offense, not defense. 3 times as many wives and girlfriends are killed by their husbands and boyfriends than felons killed by citizens defending themselves.  More than anything else, firearm murders result from arguments between acquaintances or family members - just like in the story.

observist

@everlastingphelps@observist@blowmetone Everyone here knows what our racist troll means by "Obama voters".   Nontheless, given the rates of gun ownership and party affiliation by gender, it's almost certain that a large majority of the white wife & girlfriend shooters are Romney voters.  Likely such a large majority as to make up a majority of the overall population of wife & girlfriend shooters.

observist

@blowmetone@observistWrong again.  Look at the WSJ data.  In the victims section, click on "Wives" - it filters the stats accordingly.  2/3 of both the killers and victims are non-hispanic white.
