The Boy Scouts of America May Soon End Its Gay Ban

The Boy Scouts of America's longstanding gay ban, which has grown increasingly nonsensical in light of revelations of the group's long history of sweeping sexual abuse cases under the rug, may be coming to an end.

NBC News reports today that the Irving-based youth organization is "actively considering" an end to the ban. The revised policy would allow the decision of whether to admit gay scouts to be made on the local level.

"The chartered organizations that oversee and deliver scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with their organization's mission, principles or religious beliefs," Boy Scouts spokesman Deron Smith told NBC. That way individual sponsors and parents "would be able to choose a local unit which best meets the needs of their families."

The move, which could be formally announced next week, comes in the wake of public pronouncements by denunciations of the organization's anti-gay stance by high-profile board members, not to mention protests by ousted scouts and troop leaders and their supporters.

In the group's public statements so far, the Boys Scouts are sure to include a lot of qualifiers. The changes are "under discussion" and may "potentially" end the gay ban. But contrast this with their stance six months ago, when they were refusing to budge an inch, and you see definite signs of progress.

If the BSA does knuckle under to the progressives, it will be a pity and be the cause of more abuse of scouts.  Like a moth to flame, homosexual pedophiles and ephebophiles are attracted to organizations that cater to young men and boys.  This will make it harder to keep the predators, almost all of whom have been homosexuals, from abusing scouts.

A sad day for scouting and for those opposed to the rape of young men and boys.

I have to think that by forcing gay men to repress their sexual orientation, as in the Boy Scouts and as in the Catholic Church, that it stunts sexual and emotional development. To put it another way: if you repress your sexuality starting as a teen in the Boy Scouts, and then grow up to be a closeted gay man and Scout Leader, then you're now in charge of children while having never properly developed the sexual and emotional maturity that would - like out gay men - allow you to have normal relationships with other adult men.

This can be solved by simply coming out of the closet and some therapy. But instead these organizations, in the name of protecting children by banning gay members, have actually created a situation where children are more likely to be abused. And then they were caught covering it up!

Cool, how about their ban on atheists?

And this is in contrast to their stance only a day or two ago. They threatened a cub scout pack with decharter if they did not remove their anti discrimination policy that included sexual orientation, which the pack complied with after the threat. I'll believe the change when I see the change. Otherwise it's just BS until then.

They have a gay ban?  Everything about that organization screams of HOMOSEXUALITY.

@roo_ster Your ignorant rant ignores the fact that most pedophiles are heterosexual men.  What is your source of information that almost all of the predators in the BSA have been homosexuals?  Besides your own bigoted fantasies, that is.  Every valid study disproves you.

The sad day for scouting is actually when people with your mindset try to defend policies such as these which are ineffective and self-defeating. The vast numbers of heterosexual former and present scouts and leaders who support inclusion represent the future of scouting.

@DMZ3 Homosexual development ought to be stunted by social stigma, as with any other such self-destructive behaviors.  Given that the effects are roughly on scale with heavy alcoholism, this would be the case were it not for many folks' hangups about sex and their utter fear of being thought prudish.

@kergo1spaceship Only to freaks such as yourself.  Others, without your pathetic and deviant mindset, approve of and try to further the Boy Scouts' mision of raising quality young men.

@roo_ster @DMZ3 The problem is you get emotionally stunted closeted gay men, which isn't good for society, marriage or family values. I like to think that gay rights is good for straight people too. There are too many crippled gay men entering into loveless heterosexual marriages out of "social stigma." The result is more divorce, more kids growing up in single-parent households, and more problems.

Gay marriage and gay rights are conservative values. But today's "conservatives" have forgotten what those values mean.

@roo_ster @DMZ3 Actually, you don't want to repress alcoholics -- you want them to admit their addiction and seek treatment. That's like the first thing you do in treatment. You don't know what you're talking about.

But whatever. What I'm saying is that the Boy Scouts do suppress gay men and keep them in the closet. It hasn't stopped child abuse. It may have even made it worse. There's a connection between homophobic, all-male organizations and child sexual abuse. College football teams? Catholic Church? Boy Scouts? Gay organizations and groups that allow openly gay members don't seem to have these problems, because well-adjusted gay men want to date other well-adjusted gay adults. It's the homophobic organizations you want to watch out for - because what are they hiding?

@DMZ3 @roo_ster Better "emotionally stunted closeted" gay men than openly gay men driving themselves to an early grave and inflicting externalities on the rest of us.  Better "emotionally stunted and closeted" alcoholics, pedo/ephebophiles, burglars, thugs, and such, too.

Even so, I do not buy into the "suppress self-destructive behavior and end up emotionally stunted" proposition.  Self-discipline is one of the marks of adulthood.
