In South Dallas Yesterday, a Child Watched as a Dog Was Shot to Death in Her Front Yard

4009 Copeland Street, where neighbors say the brown-and-white dog belonged.

At 5:30 yesterday afternoon, two dogs attacked 29-year-old Jermaine Jones as he walked down Copeland Street, a few blocks southeast of Fair Park. Jones swung at one of the dogs, a gray pit bull, but missed.

The other dog, a brown-and-white mutt, then moved in for the kill, biting Jones once on his right thigh, once on each hand, and once on his ass. Jones was able to fend the dog off before it could break the skin but, as he told police a few minutes later, it hurt like hell.

The brown-and-white dog, which Jones said belonged to the residents of a nearby home, was somewhat infamous in the neighborhood. One neighbor told police that it was often running loose and chasing passersby and had recently attacked a child.

Whatever the case, its days of terrorizing neighbors are over. At 6 p.m., 30 minutes after Jones reported being attacked, a young girl watched as two men walked into her yard, cornered the brown-and-white dog, and shot it. The animal staggered away and died next to a house across the street.

According to a police report, the 911 caller wouldn't allow the child to say more "in fear of retaliation upon the family." Dallas Animal Services is investigating the shooting. The city's sanitation department was called to the scene to dispose of the dog's body.

Look above the article.  A photo of Shutze holding a fully automatic assault weapon which can shoot down planes.

Look to the right of the article.  Shutze aiming his assault rifle AT the article itself!!!

Look at that evil grin.

There's no doubt in my mind who did the deed.

The police only come and shoot a dog when the dog is non-threatening. If it's an ACTUAL dangerous dog, they don't want to get anywhere near it.

It's just like how SWAT works.  If you aren't armed and dangerous, they'll break your door down at 3am and throw flashbangs at your children and grandparents.  If you ARE armed and dangerous, all of the sudden they "form a perimeter" and talk you out on a bullhorn.

The police should be looking for Atticus Finch.

The 911 operator told the child not to provide additional information?

I Called Dallas Animal Control and thanked them for the fast response to a dangerous animal  situation .

Said No one ever !

While I disagree with their actions, I completely understand them. This dog was apparently a danger to others and the owners were not doing anything about it.

It sucks that the child had to watch that, but otherwise I'm OK with it.  I regularly bike through neighborhoods south of downtown, and it's ridiculous how many clearly dangerous dogs are allowed by their owners to run freely around open yards and neighborhood streets.  Several times I have had these dogs run at me, forcing me into having to make dangerous moves on my bike to avoid them.

Anyway, good riddance to this dog.  I'm sure the owners don't really care and will just get a new security system.

@everlastingphelps Sadly true.

Understandable given that PDs have spent big bucks on hardware, but relatively little on training.  The mopes meander about the front yard in front of the neighborhood and the target house's windows and then finally stack up like Keystone Kops trying to make their buddies smile at the front door.  It is obvious these over-armed, over-armored goobers are not worried about the occupants.  If they were, they would ACT like they were concerned.

@WylieH

Not the 911 operator...

@MikeDunlap I've been nearly attacked by some dogs near the start of the Santa Fe Trail in East Dallas.  I've heard that some cyclists carry a squirt bottle with bleach to ward off dogs but I always pack when I ride.

@WhiteWhale @WylieH That's kind of interesting.  What critieria do they use to determine that?  Do they go so far as to say they don't want to hear enough about certain crimes deemed minor?  If so, would that cause crime statistics for the areas in question to be under-reported?
