Glenn Beck is Planning a $2 Billion Libertarian Commune in Texas

Earlier this week, Glenn Beck announced that he was reinventing The Blaze, his online media property, as a global libertarian news network, complete with three foreign bureaus, a nightly news magazine, and, no doubt, lots of Beck himself.

Last night, he announced the next stage of his full-bodied embrace of libertarianism, which seems to be a massive commune inspired by "Galt's Gulch," Ayn Rand's utopian community in Atlas Shrugged.

You can watch Beck's 20-minute rant about the community, which he's dubbed Independence, USA, or you can turn to Right Wing Watch, which reports:

On his program last night, Beck revealed that his intention to "go Galt" is quite literal, unveiling grandiose plans to create an entirely self-sustaining community called Independence Park that will provide its own food and energy, produce television and film content, host research and development, serve as a marketplace for products and ideas, while also housing a theme park and serving as a residential community.

At the center -- in the middle of the lake that is itself larger than all of Disney Land - Beck (with the help of David Barton) will create a massive "national archive"/learning center where people can send their children to be "deprogrammed" and elected officials can come to learn "the truth."

The Blaze painted a more sympathetic portrait:

Galt railed against the collectivist system and believed that only through freedom could people tap into their divine potential to become creators of their own: leaders, businessmen, artists, and so on. The community that was created in this spirit was called "Galt's Gulch," and it is that very ideal Beck strives to emulate in his own enterprises. In fact, that's why he moved to Texas.

Drawing on this free market, limited-government model, Beck said he aspires to build an actual community based on just that. While the price tag of building an actual city-slash-theme park is steep at an estimated $2 billion, Beck said he feels compelled to move forward with his ultimate plan "once piece at a time." Having toured "three possible sites in three different states" and having spoken to two governors already, Beck is serious in his goals.

Beck doesn't specify where in Texas this community will be, whether it will be based near his Westlake home, or his Las Colinas studio, or on some of that farmland he bought. He also doesn't say if or how the community would deal with state and federal law. We're sure Beck will come up with those answers. Anyways, it's best not to think too hard about it.

I love that the only argument the left can come up with against Beck is that he's "stupid".  Or is it "racist"?  Or is it "sexist"?  "Homophobe"?   With enemies like Beck has, he must be on to something good.

Hey, let me play that game, and I'll be twice as accurate: "Leftists, you are evil."

You know how there are people who are republicans in name only but theirs actions are progressive.  Like John Mccain ...  these people are called RINOs.  Well Glenn is a libertarian in name only.  He is being used by the MSM as a focal point for making up the "those crazy libertarians" meme.  Being an immigrant from the Phillippines I know what brain drain does to a country.

the people who produce and are the "makers" not the takers are sick of getting financially raped and having their constitutional rights taken away from them, and the fact is there are white, black, yellow and brown people included in that group, not just White crackers like you allude to with such justifiable affection and appreciation!

A commune full of gun-toting, blubbering, cantankerous, creationist, old white people celebrating 'white bread goodness' and the sovereignty of the 'little white baby Jesus.'

Oh goody, how do I join and will there be a blood test to verify I am a weepy old paranoid white person?

Kind of smells like Glenn Beck would like to be the next Jim Jones. Very disturbing, Mr. Beck.

Side note: Beck doesn't speak for libertarians. I don't know any liberts that see him as a viable spokesperson.

I'm sure Obama and his cult of "lean forward" baby killers will drone strike them or Waco them in no time flat. Progressives hate everyone who aren't like them. Everyone one must be the same in their world. OR ELSE!

Go get 'em progressives! Kill 'em all and let the state sort 'em out!

Kill kill kill the people who look act think and live differently then you!

Just what Texas needs -- another secluded, quasi-religious, ideologically-extreme cult run by a self-anointed prophet who is little more than a political televangelist with delusions of grandeur.

Someone needs to remind these morans that Ayn Rand was an atheist adulteress  who was a speed freak. She thought religion was evil.

Also, actual "libertarians" are laissez faire everything, including abortion, drugs and teh gays. what these sphincters want to create is a Theocracy.

Oops! There I go again using "facts". Sorry!

I love the idea,  I think we need much more radical experimantation of how communities should function and how we all should live and interact, but..Glenn Beck? No. He uses the term, but doesn't know what it means.

In 2012, we had two of the most libertarian candidates ever, Johnson and Paul. Beck gave them no love.

He did, however, give love to Santorum, someone who has in the past explicitly attacked libertarianism and libertarian ideas.

No, Beck, you are a LINO. You lost the right to use the term libertarian, and it will take more than a couple months to get it back.

Perhaps, behind the walls of his utopia, Beck can relax and not have to worry about having body guards protect him (do to his mass appeal and being loved by all sectors of the population (sarcasm)).   Where ever it is it should be close to an international border as to facilitate erecting a wall to separate us from him and his ilk.    The people who have envisioned this in the past come to mind-David Koresh and Jim Jones (Remember Glenn grape is the flavor of choice).

You have obviously confused 'progressives' with NRA supporters and Ted Nugent acolytes, but then again, confusion is a defining characteristic of the conservative 'mind.'

@vickmichele you're projecting.  It's CONSERVATIVES that like everyone to conform.  It's Conservatives that don't appreciate diversity.  OK, progressive DO believe in social responsibility, inclusion and tolerance.  No, lynching, hate crimes, misogyny are all conservative pastimes, that progressives are against.  It sure wasn't progressives lying their way into war.  It's not progressives who are denouncing Hegel for being too dovish.

@hbeeinc Many of us libertarians are not laissez faire on abortion.  One of the few clear responsibilities of the state is to protect citizens from violence by other citizens.  And to me, taking a blender to a human child falls under that rubric.  I know, to you it's "choice".  Yeah, and slave-owning was a difficult decision for a White American to make, and whether to engage in it was a decision for him/her to make in consultation with his slave dealer.  Freaking murdering leftist scum.  Your governments have been the most homicidal maniacs in human history, and they/you are still at it.

lawsonjoe2008
lawsonjoe2008

@hbeeinc BS there are just as many Libertarians that are abortion nuts as Republicans, as far as Drugs, varying degrees mostly just Pot and like the war on drugs really ever worked, not too much just like prohibition, total failure and and if it was legalized it's not like everyone is going to rush out and shoot up heroin. As far as gays, I think if someone wants to be gay in their bedroom that's up to them as long as they don't push their gayness on someone else. But wait, Romney, the GOP nominee was a pro abort, a gun hater, an Obamacare lover and a big Gov. Spender - nice

@MisterMean Also, it's worth pointing out that there have been thousands of communes in human history. The Jones incident was very much an outlier. Many communes still thrive around the world, and produce a high level of happiness for their members. You should watch less TV and explore the world more.

@MisterMean David Koresh and his followers, including dozens of children, were all burned to death by the government while trying to negotiate a surrender. I don't think you remember your history very well.

akowski1

@scottindallas No, it's actually Progressives that don't like diversity. Just look how they treat blacks that don't adhere to the "groupthink". Most conservatives just see people as... people. This is why for them there is no need to treat separate groups as different, or to split people into as many special interest groups based on identity politics as they can (race, gay, women, immigrant status, etc.) But that's hard to prove, so it's easier for people like you to label them as haters and racists.

@scottindallas@vickmicheleNo one will do anything to this Beck nut unless he starts having sex with 12 year old little girls or aims & fires weapons of war at the state.  If he is Waco'd, it will be he who does the "Wacoing" just like Koresh did....Beck is in the same megalomanic messianic trance Koresh was in.  Those who follow crazy people are crazy too!

This commune adventure Beck is touting will never happen, Vick, because Beck is in a state of insane fantasy in order to get some attention that he has missed since being sacked by FOX.  He misses the adulation and glorification of the FOXIE screwballs and is desperately grasping for their attention and love......

@lawsonjoe2008 Which part of "Libertarian" don't you understand?

Most libertarians, like most xtains, pick and choose which parts to follow. "I'm a libertarian and I want the gov't. OUT of my life. I should be allowed to get stoned, get my gun, find a girl, rape her and start a family. ABORTION IS MURDER!."

I'd consider Libertarian-ism  if it weren't for tea-tards like beck not actually understanding the philosophy behind it.

@lawsonjoe2008@scottindallasSheriff Jack Harwell, a friend of mine of long standing, had numerous problems with what Koresh was doing...and so did the DA's office, prior to and at the time of the standoff....There was ample evidence that Koresh broke gun laws and sexually abused minors....Don't revise history. Don't prove yourself to be a paranoid screwball.  If a lie has been told, you have just told it or passed someone else's lie on!

Look, I went to school with the original Davidian kids who came to Waco from all over the world in the 50's to be together when the world was to end on a date certain according to their church's calculations...They were nice people.  We went to LaVega schools in Bellmead then with the Davidian kids...I knew the members and leaders of the group through the years....One of the subsequent leaders even wanted to run for the US Presidency and he asked me and County Democratic Chairman, Gene Evans, to help with that.  We did not!  The poor guy was a good guy but politically naive.  Once Koresh showed up, he and Koresh eventually fought (with guns) a war over the leadership of the cult...The good guy lost and ended up going nuts and to a prison for the criminally insane in East Texas.

In other words, everything with the Davidian's was fairly okay until Koresh came upon the scene...He started the illegal gun alateration and abuse of the little girls...He was the megalomaniac who brought things to the place of the Branch Davidian demise!  He broke laws and law enforcement has no choice but to deal with it...He resisted and set the fires on that fatal day...Koresh was the bad guy in the Davidian saga from the first day he set foot in their midst to the last day of thosse lives...

harleyspoon
harleyspoon

@buddhaflow @MisterMean It is you, buddhaflow, who is trying to revise history.  It was Koresh who burned himself and all those innocent children because he was, in his own words, the incarnation of Jesus and he fathered most of those children.  He said he would go out in a "blaze of glory" and he made sure of it.  Sadly, he took those who did not want to "go out in a blaze of glory" with him...People who chauvinistically and blindly follow crazy people are, themselves, crazy!  The children had no choice in the matter because Jesus Koresh, their father, had spoken!!

@lawsonjoe2008 lawsonjoe2008, Koresh had no intention of surrendering from the very beginnng...He, as planned, made sure that fires would be started at various locations in the compound if the FBI and ATF moved toward the compound.  He kept his megalomaniac word..Koresh, alone, was the master planner and perpetrator of all the mayhem and death that resulted...

the mormon group assault their kids arguably.  The Waco group had jobs in town and weren't near as insular.  The local sheriff had no real issues with the Waco Branch Davidians.

scottindallas

@MisterMean @buddhaflow there was no evidence of child abuse/sexual abuse, though the gov't lied about that.   There was no smoking gun, they weren't planning on doing anything big, at Waco.  It was more a case of the gov't surrounding them, blasting heavy metal music around the clock, essentially corning them, and acting "shocked" that they're acting like cornered animals.  Waco was a case of over-reach.

The US Goverment broke the law and brought in the US Military (you cannot use the military against US Citizens), after Koresh wouldn't come out, the Goverment started the building on fire at multiple locations. The Gov. said we though the fire would force everybody out. Gov. is out of control and have been for awhile.
