No, Six-Gun-Toting Teachers Will not Rove DISD Campuses (Updated)

As we reported earlier, newly elected state Representative Jason Villalba announced his intention to file legislation allowing Texas school districts to arm trained faculty and staff members. "School marshals," I think he calls them.

In case you were wondering whether we might see ol' Coach prowling the halls of a DISD campus with a Glock tucked into his sweats, the answer, a district spokesman assures us, is emphatically no. DISD has its own police department. "Not all school districts in the state of Texas, in fact, the majority of Texas school districts do not," DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander told us. "Because we have our own police department, we've got officers who are trained and licensed to carry a weapon."

That is isn't to say DISD has an officer on every campus. They do not. "We could conceivably put armed officers in every school. The difficulty of course is the cost," he added. School districts have seen their budgets slashed by the state Legislature, but whether DISD should have a gun on every campus is something worth discussing, now that school safety is on our minds.

"We just don't have enough officers to place one in every campus right now," Dahlander said. "So that's something we're going to need to talk about."

Update: DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander sends along this final thought: "There will likely be a number of different ideas designed to keep students and staff safe proposed by lawmakers and policymakers in the days and weeks ahead. Each of these ideas will need to be studied and discussed in a balanced and measured way. That said, it would be inappropriate for Dallas ISD to weigh in on each piece of legislation introduced until there is time to thoroughly review all of the possible consequences."

If only there was someone already working at the school who could be given the opportunity.  Maybe someone who is already in a position of authority over the students.  Maybe even someone in each classroom!

Nah, that makes too much sense.

@everlastingphelps  You know, phelps, anytime anyone feels a little low in the IQ department, he just needs to peruse your postings. Presto, a brand new outlook.

Gun toting teachers? More guns in more schools? You've already reached the edge and gone beyond it. The nut who killed all those kids was living in a home where his mother felt protected by all her fire power. Do you get it?

You want to arm liberal union members?! OMG! :)

@everlastingphelps No, having police officers at every campus makes sense. I doubt the legislature will provide the money to do so. Nor will it for any of its other unfunded mandates that will pass in 2013.

@really98 @everlastingphelps There are plenty of teachers who are ALREADY gun toters -- they just aren't allowed to do it on campus.  (For that matter, there are a decent number of ex-police teachers.)

I'm not for putting a gun in the hands of anyone who doesn't want it.  But I fail to see why we would trust someone with our children all day, five days a week, but NOT trust them with a handgun.

@heydumbass You are extremely naive. A black guy in Chicago shot into a crowd of blacks just last week, hitting five people. Of course, he was holding his pistol in that "cool ghetto sideways pistol" style, which explains why more people were not shot and why no one died. I guess this just another one of those myriad things that whites are better at doing than blacks.

@heydumbass @pathticwhitelibtardg Check your stats.  If those are the people you are worried about, you can stop worrying.  What happened at Sandy Hook is "just another weekend" in Chicago.  The only difference is it happened to a bunch of 6 year olds.

@pathticwhitelibtardg  Check your stats. Serial killers, mass murderers (drink the nice man's kool-aid) are overwhelmingly white young males in this country. Charles Whitman, Columbine, Sandy Hook, etc etc etc . reference was to mass killings in one instance--blowing up the federal building in OKlahoma City, aurora movie theatre--white boy rage syndrome

Apology accepted--shooter on a rampage is 99.95 of the time a youthful white male.

@really98 HAW HAW HAW thank you for proving how NAIVE and UNINFORMED you are with that "white males" crack. If you seriously believe that it is "white males" doing most of the gun killings then you obviously never see the local Dallas crime news. Or the crime news from Houston, New Orleans, NYC, Newark, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Camden, Atlanta, Birmingham Alabama, Charleston SC, Detroit, Chicago, St Louis, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, etc etc etc. I'm always astonished at the naïveté and ignorance of reality displayed by white liberals here at the Observer.

@everlastingphelps @really98 Maybe DISD needs a volunteer concealed carrier force. Would be a good way for those with little trust for police or government to pay it forward.

@everlastingphelps @really98

Where will these weapons be stored? Like will we have gun cabinets in every classroom? That's a great idea. Or do teachers have handguns stuffed in their pants?

Ok--let's go along with your perverted thoughts. Let's see, lesson plan for the day---check for psycho killers, 5 minutes. Teach reading, 40 minutes. check for pycho killer, 5 minutes. Teach math.

I can see how this really works. Especially in Dallas where Miles demands classroom doors stay open so his highness can leap in at any moment.

"Well, I suppose they did a good job of policing up the bodies after the fact in Newtown."

So you are blaming the cops in Newtown who showed up in minutes and stopped even more carnage from happening for not stopping the shooter? What a dick.

@paul_petersen @everlastingphelps I'm fine with that alternative.

@everlastingphelps At the risk of starting a religious fight in the middle of this 2nd amendment fight, I agree that they are not "given" at all but inherently ours and guaranteed by the Bill of Rights... even if there is no God.

@everlastingphelps @Chuck_Schick  Guess we need to arm movie theaters, malls, in fact, just everyone just in case.

Of course, access to weapons and alcohol and drugs are all God given American rights.

@Chuck_Schick @everlastingphelps The cops aren't there for active shooters, they are there because the students are all suspects.  That's why they generally don't have them at elementary schools (and why one wasn't at Sandy Hook.)
