Louis Gohmert Really Wishes Sandy Hook's Principal Had a High-Powered Assault Rifle

Categories: Politics
Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson was among the first to opine that the 20 children murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday were a testament to the need for more guns in schools, not fewer.

That other pundits and politicians would deploy the same argument in the days that followed, casting even the most innocuous calls for completely reasonable restrictions on gun ownership (e.g. an assault weapons ban) as attempt to politicize a tragedy, was inevitable; Patterson was merely among the first.

So far, at least, members of Congress have been reluctant to follow Patterson's lead. According to the Huffington Post, NBC's "Meet the Press" could find no pro-gun senators for its show Sunday willing to discuss the shooting.

Luckily, for Fox News, they booked U.S. Rep. Louis Gohmert. The Tyler Republican, never one to let rationality or common decency dictate his behavior, was more than happy to play that drum on Fox News Sunday.

"Chris, I wish to God she had had an M-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out ... and takes him out and takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids," he told host Chris Wallace.

Wallace stops Gohmert here. Wouldn't it be just as reasonable, perhaps more so, if it was simply made more difficult for gunmen to get their hands on high-powered assault weapons?

That's when Gohmert name checks George Washington and trots out the argument that an armed populace is needed to defend against tyranny. He doesn't specifically mention the Obama administration, but one imagines those words are never far from his lips.

"Once you start drawing the line (on what guns people can own), where do you stop?" Gohmert said.

Ah, the slippery slope. Always handy for scaring gun owners. Never mind that there is very little appetite for an outright gun ban and that one could very reasonably stop at banning assault weapons.

This man is obviously on the NRA's payroll.

If the 'sweet baby Jesus' had only owned a gun, then pain-in-the-ass-conservatives like Gohmert wouldn't be a problem.

Now there is something all you cowardly, white, teenie-weenie conservative gunhuggers can certainly understand...a Jesus-based revenge fantasy. Except in this case, 'the good lawd' is gonna forge some righteous vengeance against the gunhuggers, thereby protecting the innocent, the meek and the weak.

Its past guns. Our society and what it finds acceptble in terms of raising children and what they are and are not taught about empathy, respect for others, and responsibility plys a great part here. The hyper-attentive world of smartphones and dehumanizing videogame violence needs to be examined as well.

[Lt. J. Paul Vance] told reporters that Adam Lanza used a Bushmaster AR-15 “assault-type weapon” most of the time at the school. Lanza was armed with magazines that held 30 bullets each, according to Vance. He said there were hundreds of bullets for the weapons as well.Vance told reporters that an additional weapon, a shotgun, was recovered from a vehicle Lanza parked outside of the school. The gunman also had a Glock 10mm and a Sig Sauer 9mm, multiple magazines and additional ammunition. -CNN

Hello Eric:

You had stated in your closing paragraph:

"Never mind that there is very little appetite for an outright gun ban and that one could very reasonably stop at banning assault weapons."

Lanza did not have an "assault weapon".  An assault weapon is a selectable fire weapon that is capable of firing single shot, or continuous firing.

Lanza had a semi automatic rifle that looked like a type of assault weapon.

To own, sell or trade an assault weapon requires a Class III federal firearms permit.

An outright ban on guns would require an amendment to the Constitution.

Please check the facts before you opine on a subject.  I think it best that sometimes people, including myself, should from time to time keep their mouths shut and let others wonder whether or not you are an idiot rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I have semi automatic rifles.  I  have them because I shoot left handed.  A left handed bolt action rifle is quite expensive, generally cannot be bought off of the shelf and is usually a custom made rifle.  As far as I am concerned a right handed bolt action rifle makes a really, really good way of propping a door open.

I agree with Gohmert. With a weapon, the principal could have saved some of those kids by killing the shooter. Instead she heroically sacrificed her life by charging him unarmed. Thanks to the Federal "gun free zones" law, the principal and everyone else in that school was forced to be defenseless against the rampage.

That old specious argument about knives, baseball bats, bombs.  America's mass murders are perpetrated with guns, and there are 300 million guns loose in our country.

Gohmert is a tool, but the writer of the article doesn't even know what an assault rifle is, so ignorance on both sides turns this article into poop.

The fist responder should have been the Dad however, women have effectively removed the social stigma attached to women having kids alone.  So now you are shocked that the new Dad - the State - can only be counted upon . . . to count the bodies.  Go hug a metrosexual.

Here's my question to gun advocates: either you 1)live somewhere where owning a gun for protection is necessary, or you 2)THINK you live somewhere where owning a gun for protection is necessary. There are solutions to both those scenarios that don't involve guns: move, or get psychological help. Why do you think a gun is the answer?

What is a high powered assault weapon?

For that matter what is a high powered rifle? Do they use batteries? Have a lot of horse power? HEMI ENGINE???

I'm a middle school teacher at a large urban district. I assure you, with the full range of behaviors, attitudes, etc. that push our buttons & tolerance levels to the brink of sanity, each and every day... You don't WANT guns in the hands of school personnel. We are EDUCATORS, not law enforcement officials.

If highly intelligent killers like Adam Lanza and James Holmes (a neurobiology phd candidate) want to kill a bunch of people, they are going to find a way.  I wonder if bombs would be better.  Tim McVeigh sure didn't mess around with puny small arms.

It actually didn't really work in the western days. There's a reason it was called the "wild" west. That being said, guns are not the cause of violence, so introducing new gun laws isn't appropriately addressing the issue. The issue is complex and the solution should be comprehensive and should involve addressing the causes of violence, not just the tools used to petpetrate it.

To the status quo gun folks: how is this reasonably administered? Does the principal carry the loaded M4 on her at all times? Or does she keep it locked up for safety? But that makes it difficult to use in a sudden mass murder. Should all teachers carry a loaded gun? When will you train them? Are you willing to raises taxes for the training? Not only is it ridiculous to think of principals and teachers carrying a loaded weapon, it's illogical as well.

you do realize that at one time Public schools had rifle teams? Competitions were held regularly, where is the evidence that the proximate of students to these rifles resulted in deaths?

@WhiteMenWithGuns More weak wimpy white guilt at the observer, huge surprise.

You are obviously extremely NAIVE and UNINFORMED and you also obviously never read the local crime news from any US city if you really think it is white men who commit most gun violence. I'm an atheist so shove your Jeebus guilting attempt, it won't work on me.

A Jesus-based revenge fantasy with guns?  Why?  If you are a Christian, you already believe he's coming back, and it sounds like he's bringing WMD's to set this world straight.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz Mc Veigh had a gun?  How about the 9-11 hijackers?   Do you know that cars are the leading cause of death in this country and that schools nationwide have dozens of these automated killing machines just parked outside?  Crazy huh?  Get this; fertilizer, box cutters and automobiles are not even mentioned in the Bill of Rights.  WTF?  wha are they even available?

@DOCensors I'd like to know how the guy got a Class 3 FFL in order to be able to own an assault rifle.

For that matter, are there any "low powered" assault rifles?  I think that it may be like "Grade A Milk" which is the only type of milk that can be sold.

BDTR

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @BDTR Armed to the teeth means with a full-auto assault rifle, armor plates, and helmet. I don't think that's necessary. What I do think is necessary is to get the government out of the way and let teachers and staff in schools with CHLs go ahead and carry their weapons. Give them criss training in order to help them deal with the special situations there, but for pete's sake quit forcing them to be defenseless.

In 2011, there were 3,000+ fatalities and 79,000+ serious injuries in Texas from automobile accidents.

That is just over 8 deaths and 216 serious injuries alone in Texas per day.

I have to say, as despicable as it was, I am more concerned about being killed or seriously injured in my daily commute than I am with a nut case whack job with a gun.

It seems to me that we need to increase our driver training requirements and stiffen the penalties for deaths and injuries resulting from automobile accidents.

"An armed society is a polite society." -- Robert A. Heinlein. In his later days, Heinlein, once a fine science-fiction writer, became a right-wing crank-case, espousing all sorts of goofy ideas. Not a reliable guide to behavior in a polite society. Those who hanker to see us all toting side-arms need to do a little honest research into the manners and mores in frontier towns like Tombstone and Abilene, where life was nether polite nor safe.

No, Myrna, it was a nut case whack job who shouldn't have had access to any kind of firearm who murdered a bunch of defenseless people, some of whom were  being law abiding citizens who were forced to leave their firearms at home or risk both a state and federal felony conviction for possessing a firearm at a school.
