Jason Villalba, North Dallas' New State Rep, Will File a Bill to Allow More Guns in Schools

Jason Villalba
Jason Villalba, the newly elected state representative from North Dallas, is starting his legislative career with a splash. Villalba announced today that he will introduce the Protection of Texas Children Act, the innocuous-sounding title of a bill that would allow Texas school districts to designate pistol-packing faculty and staff members as "marshals" according to the Morning News.

The bill hasn't yet been filed, so few details are clear. According to the News' initial report, district's won't be required to employ marshals, and that they will have some degree of training in addition to that required to carry a concealed handgun. The bill will also spell out the circumstances in which they are authorized to use lethal force.

"We need to talk very frankly about how we can protect our children if the unthinkable should occur, Villalba said. "Unfortunately, law enforcement personnel cannot be everywhere at all times."

The bill itself comes as no surprise, given last week's shooting in Connecticut and Texas politicians' response to it. And it shouldn't be a surprise when the bill passes the Republican-dominated state legislature, given the lopsidedness of the Second Amendment debate here.

What is a surprise is that such a high-profile bill was filed by Villalba, a legislative rookie. It goes to show that the state GOP really does consider him its future.

Update at 3:32 p.m.: Villalba hasn't yet called us back, but he did send out a tweet a while ago:

That clears everything up.

Dear Dallas Observer: As usual you taint yourself with another moronic political post offering useless criticism while ignoring the real issues and real numbers. That, when all I want you to do is tell me if Dallas has any events going on this Wednesday night! You may recompense by doing the following: Please demonstrate how banning assault rifles would have prevented this. HINT: The US has statistics to show what happens when assault rifles are banned (basically nothing). Also, please demonstrate what happens when almost all guns are banned in a country. HINT: They did that in Australia and almost all crime rates went UP. Also, most urgently, please explain how, other than arming good, honest citizens, we will prevent future issues like this WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE POLICE TO SHOW UP? Love, Justin

According to CBS Evening News Tuesday evening, at least one Texas school district pays for training teachers to carry concealed weapons in class rooms. Some teachers and school district administrators do carry in class rooms. Note that this very rural school district houses all 108 students in one building.

Sounds like someone needs to have a drug test.   What a stupid idea.   Sounds like too much crack to me.

It'd be great if politicians would at least once be proactive instead of reactive. We have a GOP and Gubner who wants to cut health care funding, which would assist in these mentally unstable people avoiding killing someone. Instead, we have an unproven Rep who thinks more guns in schools will help solve murder sprees.

I can't wait for the first kid to go into his teacher's purse and steal a hand gun.

So I envision school staff stalking the halls with an assault weapon slung over one shoulder and a bandolier over the other, nervously peering over their shoulders, ready to strike.

So then what's the solution? If its not having our children protected with guns then what? Ah yes, ban guns. Because taking away people's legal right to bare arms is a much better choice. I'm sure the criminals will relenquish their arms as well and there will be no more gun violence. Do you twits really think its that simple? Do you really think that restricting firearms from honest citizens will have ANY impact on gun violence? Do you plan to have the government systematically remove all firearms from private possession? Of course you realize it would have to be on a world-wide scale right? Of course you also know that the only people that MIGHT comply are upstanding citizens. So you're not even removing the weapons from the hands that will use them for nefarious purposes, just everyone else. I'm not one of those super gun nuts, but you people are being naive. There are so many other factors that lead to tragedies like this, but the knee jerk reaction is gun control. Less guns in the hands of citizens will no impact their use by criminals. Nor will it prohibit those who want to harm others from succeeding. Trading liberty for a false sense of security is absurd.

I did a poll of my many teacher friends. Not a SINGLE ONE of them wanted a gun in their classroom. NOT ONE. Where will the liability rest when a student accidentally shoots themselves or another student with a teachers gun? How is the teacher supposed to secure that weapon every day? Are we going to arm our teachers with AR-15's? Because I can't see any other weapon doing much good against an AR-15. While we're at it, are we going to have teachers qualify every six months like law enforcement? Or are we just going to hope they actually go to the range on a regular basis to keep up the skill necessary to kill an active shooter - probably kevlared to the hilt - while at the same time trying to take care of the children in their charge? Pull your heads out of your asses people. Arming teachers is NOT the answer. This just gets more stupid and out of hand every day. I live in modern 21st Century Dallas - not the damned wild west. Grow up. Most of you don't even think your teachers can teach, but you think they should be armed.

why not just put PROFESSIONALS in the schools...each school have it's own police officer who is properly trained?

@Jayne Ochoa: Adam Lanza's mother DID have guns. She had several guns, in fact. He took those guns, killed her with one, then used it to murder many innocent children and teachers. So...what good versus harm did those guns she had do that day?

Ill give up my guns when the police do.  Any regulation in between is just fodder for the two political sides sparing with the emotions of those affected by this tragedy.  The country.

makes sense.  Sounds like the most effective and immediate stop-gap until the Left can ban Jesu . . . er, law-abiding citizens from entering gun-free zo . . . uh . . . stop the madness and have ALL 4th grade girls mount condoms on bananas.  See, you can't stop them from having sex, popping out babies as a revenue generator at taxpayer expense, then loosening them upon society.  You can only hope they don't murder Momma first.

There was a time not too long ago when it wasn't necessary to have armed teachers in the school system.  But that was a time before the Left succeeded in manufacturing worthless Americans in such large numbers.  Including the defective ones like Lansa.

As I stated on another Observer thread: how does this work practically? My kindergarten teacher is strapped at all times? Like during reading circle? Would that distract the kids? What about high school? What about the angry football player that tries to overwhelm the literature teacher to gain control of the weapon? Isn't that dangerous? OK, so lock it up in the desk for safety. But then it's not useful when the wacko barges into your room. Are you willing to raise taxes to train these teachers? Hire more teachers to take over when the regular teachers are gone at training? Pay them more now that they have to be security guards too? How do you check the guns in at the end of the day? Where do you store them? How do you manage the liability? Are you willing to accept casualties and injuries, like what happened a few months ago at the NYC Empire State Building shooting...where the officers, shooting at the assailant, shot innocent bystanders in the chaos? Why stop at the teachers? You don't want them packing more heat than you during that conference. It's a never ending arms race...

Gun Control hasn't stopped a single active shooter.

Active shooters regularly kill themselves as soon as someone else with a firearm shows up.

Therefore, gun control is a great idea that we need to implement in the heat of the moment, but you would have to be a moron to think that having more non-insane people with guns is a way to stop active shooters.  Is that REALLY your logic?

@everlastingphelps Gun control isn't about stopping someone after they've started shooting.  It is about preventing a shooting from happening.  Unfortunately for both sides of the debate, you can't statistically analyze the number of shootings that never happened.

Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2013 but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

@everlastingphelps So that tells us what happened, not what didn't happen.  Were there people who given easier access to guns would have committed the crimes but because of the laws in place didn't have the opportunity?  This isn't the Minority Report.
