A homelessman died in a trash compactor in Fort Worth.
A garbage truck was making the rounds on Fort Worth's east side at about 6:30 a.m. today when, after emptying a dumpster behind O'Reilly Auto Parts and turning on the compactor, they heard screams coming from the back of the truck.

Matt Zavadsky, a spokesman for MedStar EMS, told CBS 11 that a homeless man, about 45 years old, had been sleeping in the dumpster when the truck arrived. By the time driver was able to stop the compactor, the man was having a heart attack.

An ambulance rushed him to John Peter Smith Hospital for treatment where he later died, according to the Morning News.

A cursory Google search reveals that homeless people are crushed in trash compactors more often than you might expect.

Dumpsters seem to be one of the few places that offers some protection against the elements.

Let me see if I can think of any... oh here's one A HOME. AKA: House, apartment, room, condo, townhome, townhouse, loft, bedroom etc etc etc

Or: A tent! Teepee, wigwam and more!

Why didn't you let him come live with you Eric? Think of all those amazing opportunities you lost out on. You could have squeezed dozens of articles full of your patented sanctimony about how groovy and "progressive" and "forward thinking" you are. Now the guy is dead. Shame on you!

The inadvertent symbolism of this event is heartbreaking.

Jon, I doubt the homeless man had any idea that it could crush him. He was probably looking for a way to escape the freezing cold temperatures.

Considering that this dumpster is located around 2 miles from four homeless shelters (Salvation Army, Union Gospel Mission, Patriot/Liberty House, Presbyterian Night Shelter) on E. Lancaster, I find it incredibly sad that this man's last night on Earth was spent in agony from being crushed by a garbage truck while trying to keep from freezing to death.  I wonder if he had been kicked out of one or more of the shelters.

Goodness, I can onlly imagine what the workers went through when this happened. How could they know? They can't check each dumpster in town before dumping. I feel bad for them. RIP homeless guy, hopefully it was quick :-( so tragic!

Actually, a heart attack killed a homeless man. Nice headline though.

Its the homeless man stupidity that got him killed.

@priruss  It's likely that he had been kicked out.  One of the only reasons you ever see someone sleeping on the street is that they refuse to live by the rules of the shelters.  That, or they're just mentally ill.  There's always a place to go if you are willing to behave yourself.

@priruss Uhh. This piece of human garbage died from a heart attack not "in agony being crushed."

One less Obama voter:(

@priruss ...or he just got there too late. Many shelters have early curfews.

@DOCensors @priruss "piece of human garbage"

You know this person? What made him human garbage?

"One less Obama voter"

How do you know who he voted for?

@markzero @cheeseburger @priruss Not sure why you think I think that's OK.  The point is, there's always a place for people to go.  There's no logistical reason for a person to sleep outdoors at night.  With respect to the mentally ill, they still have rights, and you can't make them sleep indoors if they don't want to.

@cheeseburger This is really clunky.  Can't even reply to my own posts now.  This site needs help.
