You Will Soon Be Able to Surf In Fair Park

One of the many available FlowRider styles.
Here's what we know so far: Fair Park, in an effort to not be a waste of space 11 months of the year, is opening an amusement park. It's called Summer Adventures, despite the fact that it will open next spring. It will have the $11 million, 500-foot Top of Texas Tower.

We didn't know until today that is that, according to city documents, there will also be a FlowRider. And what's the FlowRider, you ask? Well, it's like the ocean in that you can surf on it. But it's really more like one of those Endless Pools in that you just hover there on a jet of water. You can watch a video here.

So.... the streets are falling apart, DPD investigative services are being cut to the bone, 911 response is broken, but Mary Suhm is busy building a "FlowRider" and investing $12 million in the new Texas Horse Park in the Trinity (since the sponsors failed to raise even a fraction of the money they promised).

You gotta' love Mary Suhm's priorities.  And, oh yeah, she programmed $85 million in revenues from the regional 121 tollway agreement to the Trinity Tollroad, even though she and Leppert repeated promised us that our investment in that crazy boondoggle was capped at a little over $50 million.  That $85 million could have been used to rebuild city streets, finish out the bicycle lanes-- all kinds of stuff Suhm tells us we can't have 'cause we're brokesters.

I said something wrong, I am not the only Flowboarder in dfw. I meant competitor. Sorry! There are dozens of us who share the same passion!

The flowrider in Plano is the weakest wave you could build. That is a single jet and when kids are out of school the schedule is filled up with inexperienced riders. For people like me, I have been flowboarding since 1998. A family oriented, growing sport, and to those of us who participate in world tour competitions every year, another wave is a dream come true. I am the only Flowboarder in DFW. My name is Alyssa Mize. I grew up riding at the flowrider in Arlington at Hurricane Harbor. This past season our big surf was closed down due to mechanical issues and may never open again. If you can imagine, that's a heart break for me. Some of you may laugh under your breath but this sport Is my life. Google me, for one and do your research on the flowrider. You will find that they are being built all over the states. So all in all. I need this wave. And so do a lot of others. I train year round, thanks to the Aqua Shop in Plano. To maintain my reputation as one of the top 5 female flowboarders in the world. I hope you find this interesting and try to like the sport someday. Maybe even try it. Thanks!

Does the City of Dallas realize that one of these has already been installed in Plano?

I thought the city already built one of these on the Trinity River below the Santa Fe Trail.  What ever happened to that $3.9 million boondoggle?

So that is what you do ?

Glad you know how .Your  skill makes it look EASY....Which I doubt it is

As for the rest of us who might want to try ?

I  suggest that you and what ever umbrella organization  the shop in Plano and others who enjoy the sport  get involved in this process early  Make sure it is built in a way that will have the ability to welcome all who want to participate.

@oakclifftownie There are two types of ways to ride the flow: Bodyboarding and Stand up. As a beginner to the sport, Bodyboard would be more of your friend. The real joy of riding, is knowing how to stay on and control your board to have a great ride. That is very simple to do. This picture seems a bit far fetched. I doubt they would build the wave as they have shown in the picture. That is called the D Rex, only one of its kind and it is in Durbam, South Africa. A double or triple beach break (which is the style of wave in Plano just longer by one or two jets) or a flow barrel which is the kind you can find on www.wavehouse.com To answer your question, if its a beach break, the newer waves have a mat that completes its surface that is secured down on all sides and has a trampoline like material. So when you fall you bounce. I eat mat by the minute and am never hurt to where I can't go anymore. I have had plenty of private lessons where I instruct kids, adults and even grandparents. It's such a fun sport Bc I could teach anybody how to maneuver their boards all the way up to learning pro tricks. I'm a private instructor for the flow in the dfw areas. My personal favorite is the flow barrel, because it being more like the ocean for me. My board sponsor World Class Bodyboards is based out of California so I get to go over there soon so I can ride!
