With Commissioner Maurine Dickey Pushed Out, Who Has the Guts to Resist JWP?

Damn. Now I have to send Roland Dickey's barbecue book back to him. I got it a few days back. It was a gift. I looked it up online, and it's worth about 45 bucks with shipping. I want to say something positive about his wife today, so if I keep it that puts me in the position of being an inducement-taker. I will take it back next week.

Yesterday Unfair Park told you about the ugly racial fight that broke out at the Dallas County Commissioners Court when Commissioner John Wiley Price once again accused Commissioner Maurine Dickey of racism because she dared to question a policy proposal by Price ally, Dallas County Clerk John Warren. Warren and Dickey were engaged in a good-old-fashioned difference of opinion on a chump-change issue when Price broke in to suggest Dickey was going after Warren because, "...you're a black man."

Warren seemed to agree. I'm not going to offer an opinion about Warren's role. Price put him in a position. That's where it started.

The bigger picture here is the consistent courage of Dickey, who has often braved Price's rage in crazy showdowns. Price's tantrums sometimes look like the leading edge of imminent physical violence, which I am sure is no accident. And where does Dickey come from in all this?

Well, take the diversion court for prostitutes. Dickey, a Republican with a personal history of social work, defends the program, which seeks to help prostitutes escape a bitter and destructive cycle of abuse and incarceration. Price, a Democrat whose only consistent loyalty over the years has been to girlfriends and buddies, publicly disparages the program and defends the men who pay prostitutes as their "sponsors."

Dickey does a lot of stuff I don't agree with. She does not have an amiable relationship with the city's gay community -- her fault, not theirs. I have written some fairly unpleasant stuff about her and her family in the past. But I do that about my own family.

Meanwhile, her positions on fiscal responsibility and corruption at the county have been unassailable. Take the recent news that the FBI is sorting through the county's absolutely outrageous history of entropy, mismanagement and squandered money for computer systems. I happen to know that Dickey has worked her fingers to the bone trying to extricate some kind of useful audit trail from the county's junk-pile bookkeeping on this question.

She hasn't succeeded, and I doubt the FBI will, either, for one reason: The only possible explanation for the county's absurdly inadequate accounting is that it's the result of a deliberate scheme to cover somebody's tracks. The average household with a computer and a copy of Quicken is a hundred years ahead of Dallas County in keeping track of its money. That cannot be an accident.

Price and his Democratic allies on the court succeeded in gerrymandering Dickey out of her district, so she leaves office in January. When she does exit, will there be a single soul left on the court with the courage to take on Commissioner Price? Well, wait: We haven't seen our new commissioner, Theresa ("The Doctor") Daniel, in action yet. We should all reserve judgment.

I met Roland Dickey one time, a few years ago. We had lunch. He's a cool guy who didn't even punch me out for some of the mean things I said in print about his wife. I always like guys who don't punch me out for insulting their wives. I will give back the book, regretfully.

I do wonder how their days start. "Where are you off to today, Dear?" "Oh, I'm headed downtown to fight with John Wiley Price." "OK, then. Remember to get your car inspected before Monday."

I'm just saying: Could you do it?

Okay, so Gay's love him because they votes on anything about them, but yet when is anything else that anyone give a s- about, don't care. Just like the School Board, if let's say Mike Miles and the School Board did something that would make anyone who actually give a c- about DISD very mad.  The Gay Community in Dallas would not care. As I see, he only uses people to vote in there side, you don't seen them talk about budgets or any other issues that a normal Joe would care about. They sure would care less if there taxes go up and I would if they did. I just have to wait and see what the new lady has to say. But, it seems to me over at the Voice, they don't seem to like the Grove and refuse to acknowledge it. Oaklawn, Oaklawn, Oaklawn is something to look at for May 2013 Elections. Also, watch out for Gary Fitzsimmons, too close to JWP. Someone needs to run for that spot when it's up for elections.

"I'm just saying: Could you do it?"   ------    I think there are many who would love to, but there is no way JWP and his lap dogs on the CCC including that waste of space Jenkins would let it happen.

I don't buy this fake public war between John Wiley "Coyote" Price and Maurine "BBQ Barbie" Dickey one bit, which is only there for the cameras and for political show.

They way they look at each others' eye pretty much tells me they would eat other alive, and it's all about sexual tension between the two that's a put-on for the public.

It wouldn't surprise me that, once the cameras are off and no one is looking, they're on each other like stink on sh*&t, doing each other like animals.

Ebony and ivory, humping away like two rabid dogs in heat.

Maurine Dickey just needs to take the attitude that she can buy and sell Commissioner Price for chump change, appropriate since he is obviously for sale, and she will not be going to jail. Life is good. Fairly soon, Mr. Price will face different circumstances. Whatever money he got through his criminal and non-criminal acts, lawyers and courts will take it. Mr. Warren probably needs to understand he is a glorified file clerk and we don't have a real sheriff. We have a jailer. I expect he either tones down the attitude or the next court will ensure he does. Same party or not, commissioners expect respect from underlings.

I nominate the local federal prosecutor to be the next to stand up to JWP. Jim, the question you should be asking, is who will roll on JWP first? Kathy Nealy? Daphne Fain? Ross Jr? My money's on the fact that Don Hill is probably getting a little stir crazy by now.

While Schutze writes of Dickey, "...her positions on fiscal responsibility and corruption at the county have been unassailable," I do recall them having been assailed. It seemed like she was trying to cap taxes for people over 65 who had just been given a costly homestead exemption.

Now, I'm getting closer to 65 than I care to admit, but I think people should be taxed based on their ability to pay and not on how old they are.

Why does Dallas county have any money at all? No need to audit a county if it's abolished like the useless albatross of waste and corruption that it is.

No place for a homophobe on the commission.  Bye, Hickey, and shut the door on your way out.

Won't be an issue after too much longer.  I'm sure there will be plenty of folks to stand up to JWP in the slammer.

@Rumpunch1 Bet the ranch that Kathy Nealy is singing like a long lost sister of the Jackson Five. She has alleged IRS problems as well as her entanglement with JWP's alleged payola schemes. She didn't apparenty have any cash on JWP's safe, but it seems she kept it well stocked.

@kduble The reasoning for the over 65 exemption is that most people retire by then and begin living on a fixed income. The current administration has fixed it so that retirees make next to nothing on their savings and are less likely to be able to afford annual property tax increases needed to fund the city or county's new fake bridge, a failing IT system or tax abatement for some politically connected developer's high end housing development.

I guess in your world, there are many places for corruption, waste, inefficiency, cronyism, bribery, and blatant anti white racism.  I guess in your world, JWP is your hero.

Simple as that, Gay People brag about having there things, but they don't brag about budget cuts. Even if Price was charged, the Black and Gay Community would still love him.

@James080 The reason rates are low is because inflation is the lowest it has been since the Eisenhower era. Inflation refers to devaluation of our currency. Either complain rates are low, or else, complain that Obama is devaluing our currency. You can't do both.

The real reason people over 65 get tax benefits are because they are reliable voters. Some retirees are very well off, while some families with children are barely making. Ross Perot may be over 65, yet I don't see why he should enjoy a tax benefit not available to young families.

If the motive were humanitarian, rather than political, then it would provide tax relief based on financial circumstances rather than how old people are.

Once again, my complaint about Dickey wasn't even that she offered a costly homestead exemption, or even that she capped their taxes, but rather, that she did both. This resulted in the rest of us having to pay more, including many families who were less well off than empty nest retirees getting these tax breaks.

@James080  @kduble It wasn't "the current administration" that lowered the Fed Discount Rate to 1%!  It was Alan Greenspan, a Reagan appointee who did that in the George W. Bush administration.

@kduble I don't actually disagree with much of your post. I actually favor raising everyone's taxes and cutting spending broadly, along with means testing entitlements and tax deductions. But the spending cuts must come first, congress can't be trusted to fulfill a "tax increase-spending cut" bargain.

The fed funds rate is being  depressed to control inflation, which we would expect to see because the treasury has printed money to increase the supply of currency by over 300% since 2008, and to control the interest component of the annual deficit. In addition to depressing the funds rate, banks are being paid interest by the fed to increase their capital reserves, again to control inflation. Possibly a third rational is the administration's desire to ramp up consumer spending. When your savings earn less than the inflation rate, most people see little reason to save and every reason to buy, buy, buy.......

@James080  Give it up, James. You've no idea what you're talking about. Ben Bernanke has been Fed Chairman since 2/06.

@timdickey  @James080  @kduble Bush & Greenspan lowered the rate to its current level in Decemeber after the election, at the request of the incoming administration. President Obama and his fed chief KEPT rates there for the past four years, which has been a benefit to their banking and Wall Street contributors. I wonder if, say in 50 years, "Blame Bush" will stop being the mantra of the democrat party?
