The Ballad of Lucille Baller: The Bizarre Second Life of a Dallas Police Officer Turned Rapper

The Morning News' Tanya Eiserer and WFAA's Rebecca Lopez teamed up last night for what has to be one of the more bizarre stories to emerge from the Dallas Police Department in recent years.

Their reports revealed that Regina Smith, a DPD lieutenant in charge of burglary and theft detectives in the southwest and northwest patrol units, has had a sideline gig running Big Rush In, LLC., a small hip-hop label, and performing herself under the name Lucille Baller. That's odd enough, particularly when you see Smith posing in an I Love Lucy-style wig, but what the stories focus on is the content of Lucille Baller's lyrics.

LtSmithUniform.jpg
"Don't push Ms. Lucy, because you won't like the consequences," she wraps on a recording. "Mess with me or I will shoot a [expletive], cuz Lucille Baller, she been to hell and back."

A video that has since been removed from her website includes Smith saying things like, "You know what I would do to somebody who tried to take advantage of me. You see this bullet right here. I'll stick it from they rooter to the tooter and bring it out."

There is perhaps some bad judgment here, along with some questionable rhyming, but the story is rooted in tragedy. Smith explains on her website that the record label was inspired by -- and named for -- her late husband, Norman Smith, aka the Big Russian. He died on January 6, 2009 while serving a warrant on a robbery suspect. The label and the ridiculous persona seems to be where she funneled her grief.

Whatever her motivation, Smith's public allusions to violence will not be good for her career. CBS 11 is reporting that she was suspended yesterday after the website came to light.

Update at 9:12 a.m.: And here's the video cited by WFAA and the Morning News.

Tough job, law enforcement.  That on top of losing a husband would drive many to bad judgement.

Well, we can take comfort in the fact that a very large, brave, tolerant, self-sacrificing white man, Norman Smith, found reason to love, support and marry Regina Smith. Maybe she has shown a lack of judgment. Maybe she has made some bad choices. Maybe her husband knew something you critics don't.

When you children grow a pair as big and as loving as Officer Smith, when you sacrifice your life in the protection and service of others - especially others who are simply too bigoted to see past skin color - THEN you can complain about Mr. Smith's missus.

What a bunch of heartless assholes. Try loosing your wife or husband to a punk with a gun and come out normal. Especially when you have to go to the same workplace you both occupied. OK, I take back the "assholes" part.....I meant to say ignorant dumb fucks.

I hope I never need to deal with some female cop with a chip on her shoulder trying to prove how hard she is.

A very ugly sub-chapter in the Norm Smith story was the campaign of character assassination after his death against Alex Stolarski, owner of the apartment building where Smith's life was taken. Even though the cops all knew that Smith didn't go in right,  there was an agenda that they pushed accusing Stolarski of being a bribe-paying low-life who rented to criminals on purpose.  The Morning News was also big on this bandwagon, and  Smith's widow had a role in egging it on.   The truth was Stolarski is an involved civic-minded volunteer with a  great history of trying to provide safe low-income market housing in tough areas. Eventually that story got more or less straightened out. People were chary of pointing to her role in it, however, because she was the widow.

This lady's husband was a hero that gave his life to make Dallas a safer place. I don't understand why we are attacking her for her artistic pursuits. The DMN should be ashamed of themselves for this "story".

Oh dear lord....You are a public figure that our children are supposed to respect & look up to. Rap about something other than bullets and threats to other people.
