John Wiley Price Chastises Superintendent Mike Miles: "This is No Way to Run a District"

JohnWileyPriceDISDWFAA.jpg

John Wiley Price is not a fan of DISD superintendent Mike Miles. He made that much clear when he appeared before the yesterday's board briefing to chide Miles on his first few months with the district.

"My problem is, this district seems to be in terror, and this is no way to run a district," Price told the board, though it was clear that his real problem was with the departure of longtime administrator Shirley Ison-Newsome.

"I know you can't talk to me about personnel matters, but it concerns me when you have a 40-year tenured individual, Dr. Shirley Ison-Newsome, all of a sudden disappears from the landscape," he said. "A lady who has given so much to this district, who has provided so much direction and value, even in the interim has been that bridge that this district has had reliance on, and to find out that all of a sudden she gets dismissed." Price, paraphrasing LBJ, warned Miles that "sometimes when you try to save face you usually lose your (pauses to search for word that's not "ass.") glutes."

There are relatively few who mourn the departure of an administrator whose political connections have seen her through several superintendents and any number of minor scandals, particularly given her golden parachute. But Price's broader point -- that the district's rank-and-file are very, very concerned -- is spot-on.

George Rangel, executive vice president for Alliance AFT, addressed the board on a festering source of low morale among teachers: the extra 45 minute workday. He rattled off a list of things teachers were being made to do during the extra time (e.g. hand-copying and listening to handouts read aloud, and what they didn't have time for (e.g. tutoring students and contacting parents).

"DISD does not allow teachers to give students busy work, and it shouldn't allow administrators to assign busy work to teachers," he said, urging the trustees to reconsider the policy

Board members promised to do so, but not until next month. For now, teachers will have to suffer through boredom and hand cramps.

I have heard many teachers saying how the morale is very low and how this has been the worst year ever. What concerns me is that even Associate Principals are resigning at the last minute because there is no hope.  Principals and Assistant Principals are told that they must observe teachers about 10 times a week. My kid says it's ridiculous the amount of time that administrators come into the room just to check that there is something on the board. It's a compliance thing, nothing else. Miles has the principals with checklists but knows nothing about curriculum. Just to talk to any smart student in DISD and they will tell you that this is such an intimidation tactic. It's all just fo some data collection...Kids (high school) are actually laughing at the approach to learning. DISD always teaches to the lowest common denominator...So glad that my kid will be in college soon and I won't have to keep laughing at how DISD can't even find the right person to lead the district.

Was not the extra 45 minutes per day (teachers work day) added by the trustees before Miles came on board?   Why are they waiting for next month to revoke this ill conceived idea?   I want to give Miles the benefit the issue -it seems to me that the DISD Trustees are hard at work doing what they do best-being Fuc*-up fairies with their magic shi* wands turning everything they touch into turds.

Mike Miles should have gotten up and kicked John Prices ass.Dallas County is the one bullied and in terror.School Board needs to allow man they hired to do his job. One problem down there is to many educators in job they are not trained for.Teachers need to get up off their asses and Teach. If the shoe does not fit you don't wear it.I am sick of lazy ass people going to work every day but not producing a dam thing.Only reason a kid can not learn is he or she is not being taught. To hell with all the excuses every one needs to get off their ass and work.

I know this is difficult to wrap your brain around, but it is a fact that School Districts in the United States of America are Private Corporations owned by somebody-a person. How can a State raise taxes on a state owned department? The School Districts have a Unified Business Identification number (UBI number) The School Districts are a Private Corporation that must pay taxes to the State and file State and Federal Tax every year. The School districts are a municipality owned by the City. Within each school district there are businesses that support the schools..ie school district Transportation, Lunch programs, all with with UBI numbers. So who certifies these schools for operations?? The National Education Association (NEA), a private corporation licensed by the United States. So how are these school districts paid?? Per attendance. Each year they take particular "Attendance Days" and tally up the number of students and are paid by the Cities, Counties, and States. For example in one school district the School District receives an average of $25,000 per child per year. So where does all the money go?? To the owners of these corporations, of course. So the school districts across the nation pump Billions into Lobbying groups to maintain their monopoly-and they do this with YOUR TAX MONEY. These schools that they have turned into private schools do not have a chance. SCARY....this is National Socialism: State Owned businesses. But remember, the US is a Corporation owned by the IMF, which is 54.5% owned by David Rothschilds, the Vatican Money Manager. How can this happen??? the constitution was suspended March 9, 1933. Let's all do our part in doing away with the US Corporation and get AMERICA back. This problem is not due to any one person. It is a very evil system that has gradually taken over our nation.

Wow - hard to take a side here - both are so sorry.

First, that corrupt racist crook JWP should look in the mirror before he criticizes others.  He has used county tax dollars and power to enrich himself and his cronies at the expense of taxpayers.  Look at all the sweetheart bids for county contracts that have gone to JWP's associates.  Before he talks about disrespect that DISD has shown to Ison Newsome, he should look at his own disrespect that he has shown to many others during his career.  Apparently, that Ison Newsome has been involved in wasting many tax dollars (Red Tails fiasco, DISD credit card scandal) doesn't matter to him.

But he is correct that Miles and DISD is a mess.  Miles salary is ridiculous.  The bloated salaries of his deputies is outrageous.  The idiotic DISD trustees should be dragged out and told never to darken the halls of DISD headquarters.  Miles could have gotten rid of Ison Newsome by just not hiring her back - yet he hires her back with a big raise, only to let her "retire" with 10 months salary.  Miles is so very careless and free with taxpayer money.  Miles saying that such sweetheart deals are made for many people says a lot about his mismanagement.  He will be gone a couple years with another giant payout because the DISD trustees are so stupid.

Second verse same as the first (i.e. nothing really changes at the DISD).

Next time someone bitches and moans about the great divide between north Dallas and south Dallas, in terms of development, schools, investment, opportunity or even grocery stores, remind them that the people of south Dallas overwhelmingly reelect this dirt bag to the commissioners court every election cycle.

Miles' methods and corruption look very similar to JWP. Miles' crony system is TFA and displacing extremely valued teachers for political capital Miles is trying to build with corporate reformers who believe in building credibility through mass firings of teachers. Problem is, DISD is such a toxic work environment, mass firings will lead only to massive vacancies. A minimum of 300 missing teachers today translates to thousands of kids being taught by permanent subs. Miles looks at that as simply collateral damage for his grand schemes. Remember Miles gave SIN a promotion and raise. Commissioner Williams comes to town and SIN resigns. No one has investigated that link. SIN packed up her desk and tried to erase her computer before she announced her resignation and it was on the eve of the Commissioner's visit. Keep in mind that Alan King quit rather than collaborate with Miles who is running through money for administrative overhead in the same way the last Broad Toad bankrupted the district. Miles demands obedience and subservience, not competence and ethical behavior. No one has ever demanded that teachers write propaganda for a superintendent. Miles has been wasting the last hour of DISD teachers' days by listening to more propaganda. Teachers can't even tutor kids for Miles wasting their time. His little spot check system is fraudulent and invalid. JWP and Miles in a contest over who is more corrupt, the bigger liar, the bigger crook would be a toss up.

The Commissioner actually going to the school board meeting is a  signal  to the those he spoke to and said in effect You people only think  that the way of doing "Our Business " in Dallas has changed .

Take away his contacts with in the district ? Don't take his  phone calls ? He will walk in and have a chat with them in front of the live cameras and microphones  .

I wonder how many defendants we will have as folks are brought to Justice  for the systematic corruption that has Allegedly been the cornerstone of Our areas leadership for years ?

I think we are starting to see who isn't going to be taking the Fall with out taking others with them .

I don't agree with Price concerning Shirley Ison-Newsome (SIN), but he is absolutely correct about everything else going on in DISD. SIN needed to go but remember, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Miles is the wrong man, in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is a documented liar, and that is one thing I cannot abide. It's time for Miles to go.

If Commissioner Price is against you, you must be doing something right. He is sort of a compass. It does not tell you exactly where you are, but it gives you direction on where you do not want to be.

So typical of Dallas Politics.  A stunningly inept and likely corrupt administrator does exactly one thing right in his tenure, and that one thing is what JWP latches onto and fights against.

Good for Miles. He had the stones to excise the cancerous presence of Shirley Ison-Newsome and now JWP feels some of his power slipping away.

This has to be the most important endorsement Mike Miles has received to date. Obviously, he's doing something right.

@MisterMean Yes, it was added before Miles arrived.  But Miles now seems to want to continue it.

If Miles comes back with any recommendation other than "rescind it," it becomes Miles' albatross.

8000 kids currently have subs every single day.

Miles said something about a 5% vacancy rate.  He makes it sound like nothing. How bad can 5% be?  In DISD, though, that's 10,000 kids.

Miles is driving away teachers so he can bring in TFA.

Gee, I wonder how TFA will repay the multi-million-dollar favor....

@oakclifftownie Price is not intelligent enough to seek a plea deal.

But I have suspicions someone already has......

I have had 2 step nephews in TFA.   One enjoyed the experience the other did not (both in troubled educational areas).   It seems to me, while maybe a great experience, that it is short sighted in that many TFA do not stay in that program (or become teachers for a their carrier)-it is a stepping stone for them.  Not for the long term but seems to me like sticking a finger in a leak in a dyke.

@James080  @oakclifftownie  Elected officials rarely take plea deals.  They are an admission of guilt of a crime, something that generally dooms a career in politics.

@MisterMean The TFA teachers I have met are wonderful.  Dedicated, smart, hardworking...and none stay.  The longest staying TFA I know is 3 years.  The turnover really, really hurts schools which in turn hurts entire neighborhoods.

TFA the organization is the problem.  It sucks so much cash out of poor-kids districts; TFA's greed is immoral.

To create a "need" for their expensive product, TFA relentlessly bashes veteran teachers, teacher unions (not applicable in Texas), the made-up "achievement gap," etc.

I suspect that TFA greatly rewards those who let it into a district.  Generally, although most districts have Title 1 schools somewhere, only the very corrupt and badly run urban districts let TFA in to benefit from the cash.

Student achievement, when honestly examined, does not rise with TFA present.  That's because the problem isn't the teacher.  TFA wants us to believe it is the teacher so we will keep enriching them.
