Glenn Beck is Outraged that eBay Pulled His Masterwork, "Obama in Pee Pee" [Updated]

Categories: Media

Beck with Obama pee jar.jpg
We generally don't actively want to write about Glenn Beck, for more or less the same reasons we don't go around touching other people's cold sores. But sometimes, up there in his Southlake media fortress, the man does things that put us in the sad position of feeling obliged to listen to and occasionally transcribe portions of his radio show.

But putting an Obama figurine in a jar of fake urine, as Beck did yesterday, didn't quite rise to the level of news. Beck said the stunt was to make some sort of point about the First Amendment, and that all the proceeds from the eBay auction of his masterpiece, titled "Obama in Pee Pee," would go towards a fund he created called Hope For the Holidays. (Apparently the "urine" was actually beer.)

Things got slightly more interesting an hour or so ago, when eBay pulled "Obama in Pee Pee" from their site. You'll never guess how Beck responded.

Why, with mock outrage and a vivid sense of being persecuted, of course. On his radio show, Beck explained that he created "Obama in Pee Pee" to respond to a painting by a guy named Michael D'Antuono which depicts Obama hung on a cross with a crown of thorns around his head. The painting, entitled "Truth," is showing at the prestigious-sounding Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery; both Fox News and Beck's own outfit The Blaze somehow caught wind of it and have been hyperventilating about it all week.

The news that eBay had taken down "Obama in Pee Pee" seemed to fill Beck with glee. "You have got to be kidding me!" the host cried. "Is that the fastest action you've ever seen in your life? It's been up for 30 minutes."

Beck promised his PR department is "on it" and that he wants to "make a big deal" about the whole thing. A few minutes later, they received an email from eBay, saying the item had been removed because it contained urine. "Please do not re-list," the email added.

"I bet everybody on the left, they are so open, tolerant, they just don't like it when people complain about taking the image of the savior and putting him in pee pee, or making the image of the savior in elephant dung," Beck said. "You guys gotta get over yourselves. But the savior Obama in pee pee? That's just too far."

Beck adds that he now wants to book someone from eBay for his show tonight, in addition to "this stupid artist," meaning D'Antuono. He's also soliciting people on Twitter to help auction off his masterwork.

At the end of a chortle-filled segment with his co-hosts, Beck held the jar aloft, with the Obama bobbing about inside. "This will not stand," he promised.

"It's a cause now," one of his co-hosts added.

For a few days, at least. Then Beck can get back to hawking gold companies and tearfully telling everyone to load up on firearms and farmland.

Update, 1:40 p.m.: eBay spokesperson Kari Ramirez tell us that "eBay prohibits the sale of items that include bodily fluid," and includes a link to their very detailed policies on human remains and body parts. The fact that the liquid wasn't actually urine doesn't make a difference, she adds: "The listing referenced bodily fluids, which is a violation of our policy."

Caustic old conservative white guys like Beck are simply fascinated by 'pee pee' and other childishly labeled bodily functions. Must be that Piagetic 'frozen development' phenomenon.

Keep in mind that Beck is a showman, and in this instance he intended to goad liberals. and lookee here, a lib alt-weekly blog comment section is flooded with goaded liberals, many insisting they haven't been goaded. He shoots, he scores. That's why he signs multi-million dollar contracts. You are the tools of his trade.

If the Republicans ever want to win another shot at the White House, this is the type of element they need to rid themselves of.  No one thinks this is funny, or representative of free speech; just BATSH+T CRAZY.  It's bad enough that Repubs come across (or are perceived as) as racist, Bible translating  fruits, but, then you add this......no wonder a lame, sometimes confused Obama won the election.

Funny, I don't see a bit of outrage, here. No all caps posts, no expletive filled rants, hardly an exclamation point to be found in the article or the comments... just a lot of folks that think this is funny, in a sad and pathetic sort of way.

I don't give a shit about "Piss Christ" or "Pee Pee Obama". Both are expressions of free speech from desperate people trying to prove something or other and garner attention. Neither of the pieces in question speak to me in any meaningful way and I cannot relate to either of the "artist's" motivations for creating said art.

Were I to speculate, I would guess that Beck thinks that some folks that defended "Piss Christ" would be appalled at "Pee Pee Obama", and was thereby trying to point up the hypocrisy of those people. I have no doubt that he is correct in assuming that there are folks out there like that. It's a childish and opportunistic ploy, but worse than that, as an art piece, it is derivative and unoriginal - just like Beck.

If you read my posts, I'm far more interested in the subject of why anyone would come to the defense of an opportunistic shill like Beck.

Also, incidentally, it looks like your posts are being deleted for some reason.

@TheCredibleHulk - ok, can you explain the motivation behind the photograph titled "Piss Christ"? See if you can answer without another version of nanny-nanny goo goo, and if you manage that, I might keep playing with you. Dude.

I wouldn't follow you, Albert. I'm only really fascinated by your consistent and insistent defense of Beck.

I think you've got a little man-crush going, and I think it's kinda cute.

@TheCredibleHulk @albert.finney000 - I gotta abandon this thread, it's getting too long, so I'll probably miss your obsessive updates. However, you're welcome to follow me around in other threads and yip, I'm sure readers would appreciate it, I know I do, but then again I'm a sucker for dry and subtle humor and you're nothing if not very, very dry. Dude.

@TheCredibleHulk @albert.finney000 - Jerry Springer's on in a bit, time for your break. Tell ya what, when you make a cogent and clear point supported by logic instead of just throwing popcorn, I'll drop you a dime. As it is, you sputter, and not even annoyingly. Reach for the stars son, not the pebbles.

Blake, what point is there to miss? The only point is that glen beck is an attention whore that needed to rouse his followers even though not a damn thing has really gone on since the election. What does piss Christ have to do with this? I don't remember Serrano trying to hawk it on eBay. But then again there was no eBay back in the late 80's. If I still miss the point that beck was trying to make, then so be it. It's refreshing to see that he's regarded by most as a moron. There is no depth to what he did, he simply wants attention and is running low on material.

I'll let y'all in on a little secret, Beck isn't *really* outraged that he can't sell this for charity, he was goofing on you, and he was defending the right of a NYC artist to display an image of Obama as Jesus that the artist claims "conservatives wouldn't allow" to be displayed in NYC. It's complicated, but Beck is defending free-speech rights. Imagine that!

@albert.finney000 Beck is an opportunist of the highest order and will pivot on a dime in order to reap a few more ratings points.

The fact that every once in a great while, his cause actually aligns with a righteous cause is purely coincidental and wholly unintentional in the sense that Beck actually gives a shit about anything or anyone but himself.

I miss the old Glenn Beck who was telling us fantastic stories about the Rockefellers and modern art  being a Communist conspiracy, and that little town in Ohio that wouldn't take any federal money, and about the founding fathers ll being down-on-their knees Christians, and suchlike. That Beck was funny, entertaining, endlessly inventive. This one, with his pee pee jars and his pants, is just another tedious television pitchman.

If he had offered a photo of Piss Obama, it would have worked and would have been delightfully edgy. If it were Mohammed in piss, Muslims would have burnt down their own towns and killed one another.

Steve, I read the story. I knew what was going before the DO got off their ass a posted this. I knew it was a TOS violation; my comments are aimed at those who are offended by it in the first place. Congratulations, you've missed the point chief.

Steve Handy

Looks like you're the one that missed the point Blake Wilson, eBay didn't pull it because it was offensive, they pulled it because selling something advertised as piss is against their terms. The fact that it was beer is even worse but moot. It was against the TOS, and he knew it. He knew it would get pulled and give him an opportunity to raise a stink with idiots that don't read the story. Mission accomplished apparently.

@DOCensors Are you bummed you can't buy an Obama figurine in a jar of fake Glenn Beck urine? Don't be! Beck just tweeted this: "E-mail obamapeepee@glennbeck.com and put your bid for #ObamaInPeePee in the subject line."
