Beaumont State Rep. Joe Deshotel Suggests Rick Perry Also Drug Test Politicians

On Tuesday, Governor Rick Perry and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst announced their support for a bill filed by Flower Mound State Senator Jane Nelson, which would require people applying for Temporary Assistant for Need Families (TANF) funds to be drug tested. At the same press conference, they also announced that Senator Tommy Williams will file a similar bill for people applying for unemployment insurance.

In response, Beaumont State Representative Joe Deshotel, a Democrat, has the same suggestion that many of you in the comments did: if we're pee-testing everybody who gets taxpayer dollars, shouldn't that include politicians?

On Wednesday, Deshotel sent out a press release saying he was disappointed by the proposed drug tests, which he called "fiscally and morally irresponsible." The bill, he said, would "would violate personal privacy, ignore the presumption of innocence, and continue the Legislature's expansion of government into our personal lives."

Deshotel added that there's no particular evidence that the poor abuse drugs more frequently than anybody else. Therefore, he added:

I challenge Senator Nelson, Governor Perry and Lt. Governor Dewhurst to support adding a drug test requirement to the application to run for state office in Texas. Many office holders in Texas draw larger incomes from the state than any welfare recipient and officials should adhere to the same standard we impose on our constituents. This would help ensure our leaders "walk the walk" and that taxpayer money isn't "going into the pockets of drug abusers," as is the concern of our Governor.

Deshotel also questioned how the state plans to pay for the additional drug tests. He also points out, as did the Texas Observer, that Texas spent some $6 million drug testing student athletes, netting only 21 positives.

Just for a moment, let's recognize this for what it is: abject political posturing from both sides. Republicans don't tend to like the idea of welfare, and Democrats are enjoying the opportunity to accuse them of unwarranted, big government-style intrusion. But at some point this session, in the course of a heated argument in the Lege, someone may brandish a sample cup and demand that someone else pee into it. And that would be a truly wonderful thing.

Hell yes, everyone seeking a public office should be tested as well as all federal employees.

Fair is fair, you get government dollars too not only in your salary but in your health care, so you should be tested not only at the application process, but every 6 months as well.

I am against drug testing in general as it is a rights violation, but if people have to start taking the Drug Test as proposed to get unemployment insurance etc. Drug test those republican pricks and when they pop "positive" for alcohol etc. Kick them out of office.. Eat the rich!

...yep; if anybody should be tested - everybody should be tested...and since everbody should not be tested, why bother to pick on the 99% who can't afford the  expensive lawyers and doctors that it takes to operate in the world of unfair drug laws...

Do they get taxpayer-funded healthcare from the govt like congress?  If so, lets urine test for nicotine because i don't want to pay their medical expenses.  Of course, all of them will need to blow into breathalyzer before voting on a bill with Texas Rangers on duty to arrest them for public intoxication.  Now that would be sight to see.

I've started a petition asking that Texas be removed from the United States.  I'm tired of and annoyed with your continued veiled and not so veiled threats about wanting to secede.  You want to go - I'm willing to help you.

Sign my petition at We The People on the White House website:  http://wh.gov/X9J1

Deshotel -Amen brother Amen.   Test them all.   Strip search them first then make them produce and then print it in the news papers and air it on the news at 6.   I noted a video of the Florida Gov. declining a drug test during a press conference (of note has an interest in a drug testing company and benefits from it).   Perhaps financial audits should be done to-see where their money comes from that influences their decisions.

The republicans should not only undergo drug testing, they should undergo a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, as well.

I think Mandatory Drug Testing for ALL state employees (Both Elected & Hired) is a GREAT IDEA. Fianlly an Idea from a demorat I can support.

Also Drug Testing of people recieving any kind of AID (Food Stamps, Welfare etc) is a good idea. But also include MANDATORY DRUG TREATMENT as an alternative to assist them. Prison & Jail isnt the answer to drug problems. But when you cut off their income and means of support, maybe they will take seriously the consuqences of their behavior.

Funny, Perry and crew want to assume without any evidence that all unfortunate people applying for assistance or unemployment are drug abusers, yet we have clear evidence of Perry abusing either alcohol or drugs:

I think Deshotel is right on target.

I propose the test not be limited to only Schedule 1, but also all those wonderful Pharma pills that many take without a scrip. You know, the "safe, legal" ones.

They should also make it mandatory that those results get published on line at the various govt web sites that deal with those branches.

@LegitQuestions How about this-those who are fueling this nonsense join Rush Limpballs and move to Costa Rica.   If you do not like the results of the election leave yourself and do not let the door hit you in your ass/brain

@MisterMean That skeletor governor in Florida probably has so many drugs floating around in his system just to keep him mobile that any test would go off the charts. He looks like some B-movie evil doctor, or the second choice for American Horror Story.

@unclescrappy Why do you want to subsidize the drug testing and treatment industry with government money?
