No Country for White, Old Men

Conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg has a new column out saying the presidential election was about our desire as a nation to become more European and by sad inference less American. Do you remember voting on that? I'm trying to think what the ballot language might have been.

Proposition One (ink the dot): America should be like America (O). America should be like Europe (O). Did they have to do a coin-toss to see which would go first?

I didn't see that on the ballot. Goldberg's idea that by voting for Obama we were voting against Americanism comes from the same writer who one day before the election ridiculed New York Times statistics reporter Nate Silver for his slavish devotion to a "cult of the numbers." It was Silver's "numbers racket," Goldberg suggested, that enabled him to predict something so patently absurd as an Obama win.

Hey, I stopped reading New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman -- ever, forever, not never, not no-how -- after his justifications for the Iraq war turned out to be a tissue of lies. Goldberg isn't quite there yet: At least he doesn't have rivers of blood on his hands like Friedman. But we're close.

On the other hand, I listen to this garbage and I feel a weight lifting, a vindication -- the same thing I felt when Bill O'Reilly started blubbering that, "the white establishment is now the minority."

Mitt_Romney.jpg
Yeah. That's what I thought it was about -- old white people who have lived their entire lives in all-white enclaves with no meaningful experience of diversity expressing their anger over having to make their way in a much more diverse and competitive marketplace.

It's hard to be a white man.

The irony is that they're the ones with the European sense of a racially homogeneous national destiny. The truly American tradition is the nation of immigrants, our better side, the essentially American story. It's our history as a bunch of mixed-up mongrel street-dogs that makes us robust and quick on our feet, or, as I might put it, more American (ink the dot).

In Goldberg's flimsy logic about people voting against Americanism, in O'Reilly's fists-in-his-eyes blubber-boo-hoo about the poor old white people, we see what it was really all about for most of these people, don't we? But they clearly do not.

I saw a piece over the weekend describing Republicans as frustrated that Hispanics did not respond to their pitch as the party of jobs. The Republican logic was that Latino voters aren't illegal immigrants (well, some of them aren't). These Latin people need jobs more than immigration reform, so why do they care if Mitt Romney calls on Mexicans to self-deport?

How can anybody not get this? The same piece quoted Latinos as saying a thing so obvious it's embarrassing that anyone even has to say it. In talking to a voter, once you express a basic dehumanizing disrespect for people who look like that voter, the voter doesn't hear a damn word you have to say after that.

It's how people are. Once you say that women can't be trusted with dominion over their own uteri, once you use the words rape and legitimate in the same sentence, once you convey that you really don't know how a vagina works, the women listening to you will not give a flying f-word what your position is going to be on state block grants for Medicaid. It's over for you.

When you pronounce the name of the president of the United States like you think it's funny, when you call him a food stamper, when you say he stands for laziness and dependency, black people know exactly what the hell you're talking about. They're not even going to be standing there when you try to switch the subject to support for religious charter schools. What, do you think they're stupid? Please don't answer that.

When you deride people for what they are, you deride their children, their mothers, their fathers. You deride their struggles, their pain, their hopes and dreams. Plus, you're the one who looks stupid.

It does not work. The basic worldview of old embattled racist white people does not work. It will not work, ever. It's over. By remaining mired in that kind of moral psychological quagmire, they sketch their own social and economic demise.

I suspect this is the kind of deep-running core issue that gets resolved over time by two of nature's greatest gifts to us as a species: 1) Disrespectful children, and 2) Funerals. When fathers take their children by the hand and announce they will all be marching off together into white lah-lah-land, most of the kids will say, "You march, white man."

The core of today's Republican constituency is made up of literal dead-enders. Their final gift to America will come at the end on that lovely golden field of daisies that they will push up for us. There, America will achieve its truly American destiny as a place where the word itself, white, is hardly ever uttered. I can't wait. I'm sick of it.

What? What do you mean "Can you imagine?" . Whites have segregated and dehumanized people of color since the very beginning. It is only because the people eventually got TIRED of it, and fought for their right to be treated like a HUMAN BEING...and not LESS-THAN. If you read the entire article, you can clearly see that it is only referring to the ones that have considered non-white voters and citizens to be LESS-THAN, simply because of their ethnicity, creed, religion, or, familial status, income, or political opinions. On the other hand, to assume that WHITES are the only ones guilty of racism would be to ignore the entire issue as a whole. The operative words here is INTOLERANCE and BIGOTRY, which could not be more blatantly expressed by the Presidents opponent in the election.

Wow, what a one-sided piece. You say: " . . . America will achieve its truly American destiny as a place where the word itself, white, is hardly ever uttered."  How about an America where the words "black" or "hispanic" or African-America" are "hardly ever uttered"? You are completely ignoring the fact that the racism pot is continually stirred in America by black and hispanic racists, NOT whites, not by a long shot. There are factions of white racists/supremists, but they are not stirring it up nationwide because (thankfully) they don't have the public venues. But Jackson and Sharpton have venues. LULAC and La Raza and the NAACP and all the other "minority" (read that: racist) organizations have venues. The UTA professor Jose Angel Gutierrez had a venue when he verbally proclaimed: "We have an aging white America. They are dying. We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him." Can you imagine if a white person said such a thing about hispanics or blacks? Can you imagine a National Association for the Advancement of White People or a White Entertainment Television? Research the internet for "black organizations" and "hispanic organizations" and you will be astounded by the numbers of black-only or hispanic-only groups in America which intentionally exclude whites and promote black or hispanic endeavors, businesses, etc. Anyone, including you, who believes that blacks and hispanics have not been methodically working for decades to gain control, is a fool. They never wanted equality, they want dominance. They never wanted a level playing field, they want to set the rules and call all the shots of the game. So come on, admit what is an undeniable truth, which is that whites indeed are fast becoming a minority in this nation because of the calculated, well-orchestrated efforts of the militant factions of two races of people who are actually more racist than whites ever were.

Come on, Jim! You didn't really expect Jonah Goldberg to write a column that was not intended for paranoid right wing white people, did you? Have you seen any of his drivel? When reading Goldberg you need the equivalent of one of those 'falling rocks' highway signs, something along the lines of 'crazy-ass cracker commentary' perhaps.

BRILLIANT. As I commented under the article, the cognitive dissonance of the right should be elevated to full blown psychosis by the American Board of Psychiatry.

here's a link to the column by Goldberg:

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/333038/becoming-european-jonah-goldberg

To Goldberg, the American voters couldn't identify with Romney, Ryan and the Republican Party because these voters are not religious enough and they aren't subscribing to the traditional family unit of husband, wife and 2 kids.

oh wait, in Romney's case make that 12 kids....

Goldberg points to the declining rate of marriage, as well as the declining attendance at houses of worship, as the base reasons for the Republican Party not prevailing. You know, like those Europeans.

Goldberg has it all wrong. The American voters didn't turn out for Obama and not for Romney because they don't wed enough, or don't attend church enough.

And American voters who pulled the lever for the Democrats and Obama are NOT seeking to be more European. Frankly, there is not a single European country that would elect a non-white person as their leader. Europe is very, very racist.

Goldberg and I are both non-christians, so it is easy for us to not grasp the religious motivation of those who adhere to that theology. That being said, it seems to me that the philosophy that Goldberg derides- that of Obama for "we're all in this together" and Hillary's famous "it takes a village" - are both very much Christian in their basis. Help each other, help the underpriviliged, aid the poor, these are mantras of the religious, not ideology of the non-religious.

Goldberg states that if only those who are in marriages were the votes that counted then Romney would have won. Not so sure about that stat, for from what I can recall half of those in marriages are women (at least in most states, and if the republicans have their way it would be exactly half men and half women...) and a majority of women voted for Obama, not Romney.

Goldberg has it wrong. Americans are not becoming nor striving to be more European, Americans are striving to be more American. The issue is that Goldberg has lost sight of what it is to be an actual American.

Irony alert!

All the fat white guys are immigrants.

Those wooden boats that landed up and down the East Coast (bastion of libtardism, btw) weren't cruise ships from Miami. I believe they originated in socialist/commie Europe.

I wonder how the Native Americans feel about this.

Of course the vote Tuesday was for European-style government. And if you'd liked to Goldberg's very calm and illuminating column, the readers would see for themselves why.

So, your prediction is that the Republican Party as we know it will die soon. If you take off your blinders, however, you will soon recognize that we have two parties that work like hell to keep us fat and stupid. The Republicans screwed up by offering their bribes to fewer people.

I voted the way I did to keep politicians who don't respect women, out of our bodies where they don't belong, and to encourage politicians who do respect universal spiritual values to honor all good people who live in the United States whatever their origins.

That's not being liberal, it's trying to be a good human being.  Where did I learn that? From my Republican parents and Sunday School in Wisconsin many years ago.  How did racism and misogynistic evolve in others like me from that?

@mavdog  @rapemusic You are abusive and aggressive, and therefore INEFFECTIVE in your debate strategies if you have to resort to name calling to defend your position. There is allot of truth mixed in with this persons opinion...although I may not agree with it 100%...to call someone an idiot for expressing his views according to the way it is perceived by the individual...is the biggest form of intolerance and ignorance yet. Using words like "moniker idiot" and attacking THE PERSON rather than his opinion, and says allot about a persons personal character, values, upbringing, education, dignity, integrity and CLASS!

@DallasSportsPrincessHAHAHAHAHA someone who doesn't even know the facts is calling someone else stupid. Hey DallasSportsPrincess, honey, bless your heart. You better the US Census Bureau that "whites are no longer the majority in this country", because according to the latest Census (2011), the USA is still at least 78.1% White. Bless your heart.

@rapemusic  @mavdog You are just stupid.  Whites are no longer the majority in this country.  Apparently , you can't read either, because that's exactly what Jim is talking about in this article.  Considering most serial killers are white, most child molesters are white, and most domestic violence murders are committed by WHITE MEN (not to mention garden variety wife beaters), you probably should just STFU now.  Or keep on and the libturds you hate so much are going to continue to outvote you because of your own dumb ass beliefs.

what we do know beyond any doubt is by your inability to factually back up your assertion, you made it up. you grasp at murder rate, while ignoring the other categories that show blacks committing less than half what you accuse them of.

then you spew this gem "Mexicans...who get unfairly counted as white".
