The hallway of D.A. Hulcy Middle School.
This summer, Dallas photographer Allison V. Smith was given carte blanche to wander through the halls of nine of the 11 schools trustees voted to close earlier in the year. The result is a series of vaguely nostalgic, strangely touching photos that you'll find after the jump.

"Living in Dallas, where they tear down the old and build up the modern so quickly, I thought it was important to document those places and spaces," she told NPR about the photos.

The mural in the first picture is disturbing.

What's up with the blank spot where the eyes are supposed to be on the little girl in the center?

Was the clock running?  If so, they shut the school down but keep the power on?!?!

This is so timely. Earlier today I drove past the elementary school on Henderson that got shut down. When I used to live in that neighborhood the school was the center of the universe for the community.
