NorthPark bomb caller and Gucci sunglasses thief: Are they the same person?
Yesterday, a bit after 3 o'clock, police were dispatched to NorthPark Center where employees reported receiving a threatening phone call. Threatening how, the police report didn't say. One had to assume that some crafty 17-year-old had phoned to say he would be in the mall after the 6 p.m. curfew unaccompanied by his parent or legal guardian.

Not quite, DPD spokeswoman Melinda Gutierrez told me after she putting me on hold for 15 seconds.

"My supervisor said it was OK to confirm to you that yes, it was a bomb threat," she said.

Gutierrez declined to provide additional details, saying only that the department is investigating. NorthPark spokeswoman Kristen Gibbins was equally mum, calling the threat "unsubstantiated."

"Due to the safety of our customers, it is not our policy to discuss specifics regarding our security procedures," she wrote in an email.

Had there been a mass evacuation, I'm sure we would have heard about it by now. One can only assume that the threat was made by the same person who made off with $2,500 worth of Gucci sunglasses from Sak's.
