Don't Worry: Machete-Wielding Oak Cliff Man Just Going Fishing

Categories: Crime

Yesterday, about an hour and a half before the Cowboys game kicked off, neighbors and passersby in the 1600 block of Kiest Boulevard in East Oak Cliff became alarmed when they saw a man walking down the sidewalk carrying a machete.

Police arrived shortly thereafter to chat. The man didn't appear to be drunk or high, and he claimed to have no history of mental illness, but he had an inordinate amount of trouble answering officers' questions, which mainly concerned what exactly he was doing carrying a machete down the street on an otherwise unremarkable afternoon.

Finally, after several tries, the man offered a coherent answer: He was going fishing. Where he planned to do so, given that it appears he was several miles from a body of water, or why one would require a machete to do so, is unclear from the police report.

What was clear to officers was that the man probably shouldn't be left with the machete. They told him that carrying a gigantic machete around tends to cause people to become alarmed. The man conceded the point and said officers could take the weapon, which they did. That was probably a good thing for the fish, wherever they were.

Nah, Laura, it's a small one that people use here to cut grass. It has a blade about 6" long with a real curve to it, so I use the flat side to smash the clove, then rock the blade back and forth to dice it. Works great. My point is that people associate machetes with crazed killers in the US for some reason.

Ummm, a machete for garlic? That seems a bit of over kill...

The article depicts an image of a Kukri.  A weapon designed for bloodshed.

A machete is a tool designed for work.  There are many cultures where a machete is as common as a shovel when doing work out of doors.  When i was a kid me an my dad used to go and find bamboo growing in the woods and harvest the stalks for our garden using a machete.

He was probably just really nervous.  But i was odd he didn't have a quicker response.

Where I live everybody has a machete. It's just a tool for cutting. I have one in my kitchen to smash and dice garlic.

I've seen a dude walking around with a machete a few times off 352 by fair park. Even got a pic last time.

Well, if he is latinamerican man, it´s very likely he was going fishing... Not everyone in the US is crazy... and let´s don´t forget serial killers are -by rule- white men. It´s about time society really gets to know the culture of its people.

Real men don't wait for fish to get snagged by a hook: they jump straight into the water and EARN their dinner.

Plausible?  Yes.

Probable?  No.

@mcdallas A machete is quite useful to cut through brush to get to fishing holes.  A machete is a tool and the police are frankly, out of line.  An appropriate answer would be, "none of your damned business."  But, our cops don't simply "protect and serve" anymore.

@scottindallas uh huh.  Let's consider the context here.  I guess he was going to hack his way the "several miles to the nearest body of water"?  Again: possible?  Yes.  Plausible?  No.

@mcdallas there's a creek far closer than many miles.  Perhaps you think water teleports to our rivers and streams.

@scottindallas  @mcdallas Your're right, it's a tool.  I had someone come and clear shrubs and overgrowth  around my house and he was using a machete.    I've been looking for one but haven't had any luck.   It worked so well for him, I figured I could do the same thing.
