An Oak Cliff Man Greeted the Dallas Police with an 18-Inch Jagged Knife Last Night

Around midnight today, Dallas police received a call about a man walking around West 10th Street in Oak Cliff, "wielding a large knife," as the police report puts it. The caller said the man with the knife had, furthermore, phoned him up not long ago and said, "I'm going to kill your dogs."

According to the report, the caller directed officers Mark Merenda and Terrance Hopkins to the apartment of the man in question, Kenneth Gonzaba, 46. They knocked.

"Who is it?" Gonzaba inquired.

"It's the Dallas Police," one of the officers responded.

"Fuck the police," Gonzaba replied through the door.

The officers suggested that Gonzaba step outside.

"I'll come outside," he replied, "But you ain't ready for what I got for you."

What he had for them was a rather large knife, about 18 inches in length, "with a wood handle and a jagged blade." It was "raised over his head, in his right hand, in a menacing manner."

The officers "believed the arrestee intended to cause them bodily harm," the report continues. Both drew their guns and gave Gonzaba "loud commands to drop the knife and lay on the ground."

Gonzaba dropped the knife but did not lay on the ground. So one of the officers "used a front kick to the thigh area" to get him there. Gonzaba was arrested and taken to Lew Sterrett, where he is charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant. His bail has been set at $50,000.

Gonzaba is the manager at Lockhart Smokehouse, and has no prior criminal record in Dallas County. Asked for comment on Twitter by a reporter from the Dallas Morning News, whoever mans their account replied, "Oh no. Kenny is a valuable employee. We will keep an eye on the situation as it develops."

This appears to have been a night for bizarre and violent police incidents. Around the same time, a 30-year-old man being interviewed by police about a "disturbance" at a convenience store near Uptown turned around and fled from them "for unknown reasons," a police report says. The man jumped over a concrete barrier and plummeted onto North Central Expressway, where he died at the scene.

Kenny is probably a good person before he gets drunk like most folks. Then there is what happened. He got drunk and scared all of his neighbors who thought they knew him too. They called the police on him, hmm. The Police could have killed him rightfully. Praise them for not burrying your so good friend. Stop taking up for people who do very stupid things under the influence. I guess the kid that killed 4 people because he chose to drive drunk is getting a raw deal as well and of course he's a good guy, lol. People do stupid sh__ ! and need to pay. Imagine your family member being attacked by this maniac with a machete or killed by the other drunk good guy, hmm. Enough said.

Kenny is a good person...for those to suggest he'd hurt someone are idiots like Myrna, please get out of your bubble.  Obviously the police are being over dramatic. The DMN poorly wrote this story trying to ruin another persons life. Today's society is ran by social network and the internet, making the world we live in today to soft and pathetic. Assault charges are bit extreme, he did not hurt anyone. Again DMN, DPD and all the negative comments are pathetic.

I've got a totally rude fucking neighbor with 4 constantly barking dogs. Nothing I've done, including every legal option, has helped.

I feel for Mr Gonzaba. The dogs probably pushed him too far. In my eyes he is the victim.

$50K bail and this maniac is loose on the streets?  Manager of Lockhart?  What if this nut comes out of the kitchen and start slashing customers?  Oy vay...

I suspect that an 18 inch knife is not a knife but a machete, a sword or a scimitar.  I don't think there's really such a thing as an 18 in knife.  I get that the 9/11 caller used that terminology, but I leaves me wondering about the weapon.

What's the matter, Joe Tone? You don't like being reminded that until just a few weeks ago you were a parasite who made his money in large part off of classified ads sold to pedophile child-sex-slavers?

@jimrossman Same here.

"homeowner"? Found in his apartment? Does this guy REALLY OWN a home, or is this just another stereotypical example of the Observer's "quality journalism". For all the ragging the DMN gets from the DO's "journalists", it is obvious that the DO would be lost without the DMN and would have almost no content to regurgitate, unless they regurgitate shit posted on Gawker instead.

@RM2012 He left his dwelling knowing he was facing police with a large bladed weapon in hand raised after threatening neighbors and threatening the police just prior. That is a crime. We can't have people thinking it is ok. In NYC, odds are he would have been shot. Somehow a certain segment has got the idea it is ok to physically challenge the police. We see instance after instance and they all end badly for the challenger. Challenge them with a lawsuit, a picket sign, a writ. Write an op ed. When facing police, regardless of your status, for your own protection, you NEVER EVER present a physical threat of any kind.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz I read a lot of advice here about amazing protective powers of hand guns, especially those concealed, though at Lockharts maybe just place it on the table; much better to maximize the gun's deterrent powers. There is also designer clothing lined with Kevlar.

Been to Lockhart's many a time and interfaced with Kenny.  Seemed like a really nice, regular guy.  I'm sure there's an interesting story behind this episode.

@scottindallas I vote machete. Maybe inspired by the recent Rodriguez movies.

@prochoice This was a mistake. We fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out. And for being so cool about it. Seriously. You're a doll.

@AdultBabies You're actually not wrong. Good Lord, are you morphing into an actual reader on us? You realize hanging out with libtards all day could be contagious, right?

@MikeWestEast  @RM2012 Thats just it, he did not provoke the situation, he was in his house. The police looked for this trouble, they asked to be in a threaten situation. Someone really called the police cause a dog was supposedly threaten? Come on! Who takes that damn call... again the police asked for it, they overreacted and ruined someones life.

@CrackerDaddy @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz I am sure he will get plenty of time in Huntsville to regale his best buds with it. I thought going after a police officer with a firearm was stupid. Going after a police officer with a big knife is the act of an ignoramus.

@AdultBabies no dipshit, most machetes are 18 to 24 inches long.  I use them in my work, and own a few.

@joe.tone Hey, it is your shitty incompetent propaganda rag, own up to it. Libtards like you can dish out the 'snark' all day, but you turn into wimpy crybabies when the tables are turned.

@ScottsMerkin @prochoice Well said, Amen, and I wonder if this new, much worse commenting software had a filter system. This imbecilic right wing vitriol of mostly made up words is pathetic. I am always amazed at those who promote extreme right wing trash, use made up words, and think they are the intellectual superior of anyone who ever voted for a Democratic candidate, even if they were George Wallace or Rick Perry. I know you can fix stupid but what about a filter?

@Daniel @prochoice @ScottsMerkin - that"s rich. At least the Observer FINALLY got too embarrassed by being associated with the child-sex-slavers at Backpage. Now they can regurgitate all the Gawker articles about reddit pervs to their hearts content, without any of those nagging pangs of guilty conscience because of making money off of ads placed by pedophile sex-slavers just a couple of weeks ago. Now that's real "journalistic integrity" right there!

@prochoice  @ScottsMerkin why complain, just debate them, just stop with the 1 line comment of "White Guilt Libtards"  I by no means agree with everything posted here but you can get some actual news out of this place every once in a while.  I started coming here for the sports years ago, it left , but I had become an avid reader of big bob, he left, but I hang around to comment with the other regulars, who seem to be here less and less.

@ScottsMerkin Then complain to the so-called "journalists" at the Dallas Observer, they are the ones who publish all the white-guilt libtard propaganda day after day.

@prochoice  @ScottsMerkin if you are saying Im a white guilt libtard, you couldn't be farther from correct.  I come here to read and comment and deabte, but I dont really enjoy all the commenters' whose only reponse is "you are a white guilt libtard"

@ScottsMerkin I read it because it is fun to mock you naive white-guilt libtard wimps. I enjoy demoralizing you with reality. You should thank me, otherwise it would be a boring libtard preach-to-the-choir white-guilt propaganda echo chamber around here.

@prochoice if this is such a shitty libtard rag, why are so many right wingers on here reading all day?  Im sure Mr Tone loves that you guys click and read but for fucks sake man, if you know your going to end up reading "Libtard Whit Guilt" articles why even come here?  Go read something more to your liking

@AdultBabies Your origin story is totally riveting, I'm sure. But I really just wanted to compliment you on offering some semi-constructive criticism. You read us religiously, it was really only a matter of time before you started contributing actual thoughts and opinions. Even your pseudonyms are getting marginally less pissy.
