A Billboard Over MLK Boulevard Claims the Civil Rights Leader Was a Republican

A Raging Elephants billboard went up in Austin.
Say you're a Republican activist hoping to woo black voters, but you're faced with the inconvenient truth that the opposing party elected the country's first African American president. What do you do? You put the one African American figure who more iconic than Barack Obama on a billboard above his namesake street, and tell you people he was a Republican.

That's Claver Kamau-Imani's strategy, at least. The Houston-based founder of Raging Elephants.org rented ad space overlooking Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Dallas and plastered it with the image of the civil right icon urging passersby to vote Republican.

CBS 11 visited the location and discovered that passersby weren't terribly happy with the message, nor was civil rights leader Peter Johnson.

"Using his image is one thing, exploiting his legacy is another," he told the station. "To distort his legacy, it's sacred to some of us. We know the suffering and sacrifice that was made."

King wasn't a Republican. PolitiFact Texas debunked Kamau-Imani's assertion back in January, well before he put the message on a billboard. King wasn't exactly a Democrat either, but his views aligned much more closely with that party than with the GOP, who were quickly replacing Southern Dems as the main defenders of the racial status quo.

But Kamau-Imani isn't a man to let his actions be dictated by fact checkers, nor by the thought that he'll offend a humongous portion of the electorate. And that's a strategy that works exceedingly well, especially this time of year.

Wow this is a dad thread. I see a lot of you must have skipped history and government class. The really sad thing is the depths of the ignorance exhibited. Seems as if there's an uproar over some right wingers trying to capitalize on MLK to appeal to black voters and yet the response is geared towards the fallacy that it is better for minorities to stick with the dems. Obama isn't working, and will not recieve my endorsement any more than Romney, because when you get right down to it, both are essential the same. One packaged with an R, the other with a D. But since Obama is part black he must be the right choice for not only south east Dallas, but minorities as a whole right?

And Damon, just so you and Chris Rock know - I live in walking distance from MLK Boulevard and I haven't had to "run" yet.

Malinda, they are late in the game. Many people have early voted and I assure you that most of the people in South Dallas who are voting know what's at stake and will not just vote for a name on a sign, but we must continue to educate, educate, educate......OBAMA2012

Let's just Hope and Pray that the citizens living in the southern sector are Registered Voters and understand what's at stake. I walked that area and saw a couple of Republican signs but did not recognize the names of the candidate. The real sad fact is that sometimes people who are not educated on the agendas will vote for a familiar name so I believe that is why they are targeting that area and flooding it with Republican literature. Education at this point is very important! No need to continue debating, we minorities should know what is at stake and we had better vote like we are losing. Obama/Biden 2012

The sign is postioned between a liquor sign and a pawn shop sign. If they want to do something, help this community with jobs. Please people this is just some negroes trying to get attention for the Tea Party (Repulican).

The comedian Chris Rock famously advised, 'If a friend calls you on the telephone and says they're lost on Martin Luther King Boulevard and they want to know what they should do, the best response is ‘Run!’

I like what Chris Rock says. "I dont care where you are in this country, If your on MLK boulevard your probably some you shouldn't be, you better watch your back"

All the Kings family were Republicans praise Jesus name.  Martin Luther King did not believe in Homosexuality, he did not believe in pre marital sex, he did not believe a man should marry a man, he did not believe in abortion.  That is Republican and if your a Christian you are Republican too or you are not a true Christian praise Jesus.

The RepubliKKKans are the lowest form of life that ever existed. There is no truth that EVER emanates from their mouths. This billboard is proof of that lack of character that one has to possess to align with the Fascist GOP and its Joseph Goebbels mentality of The Big Lie theory.

This lack of character and honesty in the GOP is the reason why President Obama will be re-elected for another term. Romney may be the Liar-in-Chief of the GOP, but we are not about to allow him to become the Liar-in-Chief as leader of the USA and the free world.

Hey Jennie Harding, what is the NDAA? Never Date African Americans?

Jennie Harding

The NDAA is not about freedom. Nor is it about liberalism. When did I say it was??? BOTH parties support it, that is why I voted 3rd party.

as the Notorious B.I.G. used to say, "Things Done Changed"....there's no way MLK would roll with the Republican Party in its current form...there's a nice little lesson for you dipshit Johnny;)

Jennie Harding

Why the hell has 'liberal' become a dirty word? People don't even know what it means anymore. If it weren't for liberals, we would still have slavery, women wouldn't be able to vote, no bill of rights, no civil liberties, at all. Republicans were liberal once. Etymology people. Liberalism is about freedom.

Good to see all of the liberal idiots in here start off their morning with a nice little history lesson.

Um, Trina is correct. The KKK was even spawned out of the Democratic party. Read your history people.

With bipartisan support of the Patriot Act and the NDAA, both parties have taken a shit all over the Constitution.

Trina then why is it that the states dominated by slavery and democrats are the same ones dominated by republicans today? To hold to the party standards of 1860 is a remarkably uninformed short sided view. Look at what happened via policy in those parties since 1932 in regard to civil rights and the "confederacy" argument goes out the window.

Im amazed MLK's estate and family let his image be used like this.

Trina Taki Hendrix-Hamilton

The Democrat party was created by the Confederacy, and most if not all black people, even if they lived in the South, wanted to be free and were Republicans. I am black and I am a Republican. The United states is a Republic and it seems there is so much fascism running rampant, its becoming an anti-Constitutionalist Democracy.

(I've lost count the number of times I've had to help my neighbors remember U.S. history when they tell me the Civil Rights Act was passed with Republican support. It was, but none of those votes came from southern states.)

There are black Republicans now...didn't Colin Powell just endorse? I have always heard that was true about MLK and he joined back then with R's to push civil rights agenda.....
