That Time a Romney Mega-donor Drove a Guy's Car Into a Fort Worth Pond

Categories: Politics

After more than a decade as an investment banker for outfits like Merrill Lynch, John Kleinheinz struck out on his own in 1996, establishing what would become Kleinheinz Capital Partners in Fort Worth. Over the next decade-and-a-half, the hedge fund exploded, growing from basically nothing to $1.8 billion and providing Kleinheinz with a comfortable income.

Kleinheinz was comfortable enough, at least, to donate $1 million to Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney SuperPAC. But Kleinheinz isn't so kind to everyone, namely photographers who may or may not have stepped onto his property.

Politico dredged up a Star-Telegram telling of an Aug. 30, 2005 incident near Kleinheinz's home.

According to the Star-Telegram, David "Smiley" Irvin was photographing a couple and their two young sons near the 1000 block of Hidden Road. Irvin insisted he was on property belonging to the River Crest Country Club, but Kleinheinz, who has a 40 acre spread next door, insisted otherwise and threatened to call the police.

Irvin told him to go ahead and kept shooting. While he was doing so, Kleinheinz jumped into Irvin's rented Kia Sedona, turned on the ignition, and put it into gear. He jumped from the minivan as the minivan gained speed, then returned to his BMW where his two children were waiting and drove away. The Kia crashed into the bond, only it's luggage rack visible above the water. Police divers and a tow truck pulled it out the next day.

Police estimated that the Kia suffered $16,000 worth of damage on top of the $25,000 worth of camera equipment in the back. Kleinheinz later surrendered to Fort Worth police, though Irvin declined to press charges after the parties reached an agreement. In an email to the Star-Telegram, Kleinheinz called the incident "regrettable."

I thought the story was funny. Even the vanker's name is funny. Been years sense I spent time in Germany but I would translate it as Little Bastard.

You know Romney's in trouble when his comment-drones find it necessary to spend time refuting Observer posts (or they too stupid to realize this isn't D-Magazine). Their reaction to the shellacking they are going to take in November at the top of the ticket should be entertaining.

So because he gave Romney money you dredge up an old story so that people will equate voting for Romney with meaning you support this d-bag?  Crappy journalism by another d-bag.

I wonder when the Observer is going to run stories about Eric Holder running guns into Mexico under the Fast and Furious program?  We have yet to even get a "regretable incident" statement from the Obama Administration on this one.

Weren't some government employees murdered by people using some of these guns?

Didn't the Obama Administration first try to use the incident as a justification for additional gun controls?

Rich folks acting poorly is always entertaining but I struggle to understand how this is filed under "Politics".  I suggested the author take a little time to research and write an article about our corrupt failed Congress/Senate/POTUS 's inability to address the broken tax system, out-of-control spending, pending fiscal cliff, and so and so on.   Maybe Mr Schutze can offer an after school lecture?

Like some other folks, I used to come to Unfair Park a couple times a day.  Now I'm down to a couple times a week.  And every time I check here it seems like the bloggers have made yet another desperate attempt to manufacture a local negative story about Romney.  The guy is going to lose anyway.  He doesn't need your help.  Let it go and actually cover some real local news.

As devastating as this new information is for Romney, you have to admit it's a damn funny story. If Richie Rich wants to drive my Kia and cameras into a pond, I'd give him the keys. New car, new cameras, win-win.

Kleinheinz owns the old Howell estate and it is not 40 acres. At least I don't think it is 40 acres.

George W. Bush has stayed at that house and old man Howell went to prison for something like fraud. Howell owned an electronics or perhaps avionics company that was on Vickery near Montgomery.

You couldn't even attempt to make this story your own?  Maybe contact someone involved?

Oh yeah.  It happened SEVEN YEARS AGO, and it probably wasn't even newsworthy then.  Why the hell would anyone involved in it want to bother to talk to you about it today?.

I usually refrain from criticizing the journalism here (except when Tone phones it in by posting inane YouTube videos), but c'mon Eric, this isn't even phoning it in.

Smiley's Photography has been around forever in Fort Worth. He did our high school choir photos 37 or 38 years ago at Joe T. Garcia's patio area.

@Dallas_Observer - at least there wasn't a dog in a carrier on the top of the minivan. 1 per Romney-ite.

son of a bitch this blog has crashed since Big Bob left.  I can't even begin to comprehend why you spent time writing this story.  Wow is all I can say.  I'm down to 2-3 days a week looking at Unfair Park, but if this is all I have to look forward to, what's the use anymore...

I wouldn't vote for Romney of you held a gun to my head, that being said, other than petty spite, what is the reason that this is here?  Some guy behaved poorly over 7 years ago, and then later gave money to a  campaign.  So what?

The only probable reason to post this is to attempt to smear Romney's name.  I guarantee that B.O. would have taken this guys money just as quickly.  I mean there is not even anything here that says Romney has even met the guy, Unlike our Current president and Rev Wright, or his College professor/murdering bomber friends.

Reminds me of the lines from "Fried Green Tomatoes"

[Evelyn is cut off in a parking lot]

Evelyn Couch: Hey! I was waiting for that spot!

Girl #1: Face it, lady, we're younger and faster!

[Evelyn rear-ends the other car six times]

Girl #1: What are you *doing*?

Girl #2: Are you *crazy*?

Evelyn Couch: Face it, girls, I'm older and I have more insurance.

See, this is news.  A story about one of Obama's backers being the Speedway Bomber and a convicted terrorist?  No story there.

Then we see an obvious connection, it's becoming popular to tag Romney as Thurston Howell III, so the relevance is becoming more clear.

The reason it's posted is because this is a leftist newspaper, and the Poltico is a wire service for left.

We can be sure there s a thick file of dirt on anyone connected to Romney to be released as events demand. In this case it was the tax info released today.

Politico and Media Matters, they're both favorites of the administration. As we know now, Media Matters and the DoJ have been dating for a while.

Unless Obama has evolved, we'll see a good amount of stuff of this nature. Tere are a lot of republicans that have done a lot of bad things that also contribute to Romney, Each one of them is a potential asset.

As we know, the campaign/administration will name select Romney contributors and publicize them along with the administration's characterization of their supposed mideeds..

And of course there's the effort of democrats to send the names and/or emails of neighbors, aquaintances, co-workers and such that are identifiably republican. Presumably so the administration can just chat with them if need be, a little education. Benevolent stuff.

Then there's attackwatch.com, - so the people could alert the administration of misinformation circulated in conversation, or in comments sections of blogs, wherever people might spread misinformation harmful to the Administration.

What harms the Administration harms the Nation. What harms the Nation harms the people. True Patriotis - when you hear something, say something.

If this sort of pattern was by, say, a Chicago Daley machine Alynskyite with a history of not exactly winning elections by votes, I'd be a little concerned. As it is, nothing to see here, nothing at all.

@everlastingphelps - Big story, Romey backer. Meanwhile the Price-Waterhouse report released today kinda Suggests there's A certain Mormon who just got caught in a big fat lie. Nothing to see here, folks, the real news is 7 years old.

@ObverseDaFactsJack  @ObserverHatesFacts both stories involve high profile backers of challenger candidates in presidential elections doing something stupid that ended with a car submerged.

Only one story got somebody killed though.
