If SMU is "Dallas' Team," Then Why Do They Play in University Park?

Last Saturday, a few hours before SMU's football team kicked off its season with a miserable loss to Baylor, I was driving down Lovers when I noticed scattered yard signs proclaiming "SMU is Dallas, Texas." I scratched my head at why the school had chosen such a terrible slogan, since SMU is very clearly a university and not a city.

The tag line seemed less terrible after head coach June Jones tweeted a link to the above video and it became clear that SMU is Dallas' team, not Dallas,Texas, but even that's a stretch. SMU isn't in Dallas but the Park Cities, and its cost puts the school out of reach for most Dallasites. Tuition and fees alone are $41,750 per year, about one-and-a-half times the per-capita income in Dallas.

Class and geography aside, the slogan ignores the fact that Dallas already has a football team called the Cowboys. In terms of college sports, Dallas doubtless has more Longhorns and Aggies fans -- and possibly even more Sooner fans -- than Mustang loyalists.

I'm an SMU fan, but that's not because the university's athletic program is somehow emblematic of Dallas. It's because my parents went there and I grew up watching their games. And to be honest, the new slogan has a nice ring to it. It just happens to be wrong.

One of the most disappointing blurbs I have ever read. I knew you would circle your argument back to the Cowboys, I just knew it! A team who has not played in Dallas County in over 40 years. Their facilities are in Valley Ranch, new stadium in Arlington, and only other stadium built for them in Irving. Also, please understand that the bounds of "America's Team" stretch vastly beyond the confines of Dallas County. We share them with the country, not county in which they do not play.

I was sitting next to a co-worker when we read your title and I said, "PLEASE, if this guy tries to use the Cowboys here, I will be very disappointed. Don't do it, for heavens sake!!" I did not want to read the article because any person that has lived or visited Dallas for longer than a 12 hour period could see right through the geographically unsettling title. I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt, but sure enough... my worst fears came true. You were trying to be cute, and I understand that. The problem with your idea is that when the fundamental flaw of an article trying to be cute is exposed before a point is even made, you do not even have a shot at defending yourself. This was the first article I have ever clicked on the first time I have ever ventured to this site. I could not believe it.

SMU, HP, and UP are all in Dallas County, actually in the heart of Dallas County. SMU is the ONLY College Football team in Dallas, and they have been before you were born, your parents were born, and maybe your grandparents. Even though people in these parts are more familiar with the name of the future HP quarterback who is starting for the 7th grade team over SMU's signal caller, the slogan is correct. Plus, SMU girls are hot.

Dallas already has a football team called the Cowboys, according to you... but the Cowboys are in Arlington.

Meanwhile, SMU is in an enclave entirely surrounded by Dallas city limits and I believe their new developments on the East side of Central bleed into Dallas city limits... but you take issue with them being Dallas' team?

Official address for SMU:

6425 Boaz Lane

Dallas, TX 75205

Cowboys play in Arlington and office in Irving, how does that prove your point?

If SMU is in Texas, then why are they joining the Big East?

Sounds like someone has a chip on their shoulder over not being accepted..

Well, at least SMU is in Dallas ... County.  More than the Cowboys can say.

As to cost:  Attending an SMU football game is infinitely more accessible to the average resident of Dallas than attending a Cowboys, UT, or Texas A&M football game.

It's a great marketing plan, and one that "talking heads" have talked about for years........since they are really still bouncing back from the death penalty; and have a problem winning consistently-I think not. Maybe in the future they''ll be "Dallas' Team".  I'd rather watch TCU or North Texas; or go to Austin.

You punk, how could you forget the TCU - Horned Frog faithful? Dallas surely has a lot of those GO FROGS!

Can we just cut and paste a link to the rant about the Cowboys being in Arlington (after having previously been in Irving)? I'm sure it's somewhere on this blog.

there are also radio ads touting 'Dallas Team' to sell tickets. they should sell beer in the peasant section at Ford Stadium, then i might go check it out.

Don't you have another pathetic naive white-guilt libtard "progressive advocacy" article to write?

Is there a city not named Dallas in the Metroplex you don't have issue with?

 @anon

oh yeah, this blog has seen it's share of bitching about baseball  and football not being in Dallas proper; it still chaps my ass you have to basically, descend into hell to see a pro sport....and it's like 1000 miles from anybody with teeth or money.

Must also be a slow (and pathetic) day for someone who feels compelled to chime in under different aliases twice to show his contempt for something so innocuous.

@kergo1spaceship @anon Based on your comment, you must think the Rangers and Cowboys play in the Fair Park neighborhood as was the grand plan. No, they play in Arlington, a fairly friendly, unthreatening city where most citizens have good dental plans.

 @MikeWestEast

I'd rather they play in Fair Park; I wouldn't need a sherpa, or four days rations iff'n they did. Arlington sucks!  Now, I rate the worst North Texas cities/towns/municipalities:

6)Arlington

5)Balch Springs

4)Mesquite

3)HEB

2)Little Elm

1)Garland
