Woman Claims Botched Tummy Tuck Left Her Eating Through a Hole in Her Stomach

In 2009, Rolanda Dickerson went to Forest Park Medical Center for a tummy tuck. Instead, according to a lawsuit first reported by Courthouse News, Dr. John Alexander gave her a gastric bypass.

That was a problem both because the procedure wasn't what she had agreed to and because Dickerson had received a gastric bypass three years before. Complications ensued, prompting Dickerson to go to Alexander for a second operation in 2010, at which point she says things only got worse, with "painful, disruptive digestive issues and other medical issues on a nearly weekly basis" and several hospitalizations according to Dickerson's suit again Alexander and Forest Park. Then there's the kicker:

As a further result of the procedure ... Rolanda Dickerson is unable to eat food and drink liquids in the normal way. Instead, she has had to have a port installed in her abdomen. The port is attached by tubing to a backpack that she must carry with her at all times. The backpack is a pump/controller/battery assembly and two bottles: one contains water and the other contains liquefied nutrients (with a baby food-like consistency). A pump in the back periodically dispenses "food" and water into Rolanda's abdomen for digestion.

The suit alleges that Alexander and Forest Park's negligence caused pain and mental anguish, ongoing medical expenses, and lost wages for which she s requesting compensation. I have a call into Alexander for a response. For now, we'll turn to the clinic's website: "At Forest Park Medical Center, extraordinary is all we do."

Dr Alexander is a azz.. He messed me up and a friend of mines... We both have to go get fixed because of his procedures are bullshit.... I wouldn't refer this doctor to anyone.... so the nurse that's lying for him is crazy... explain my problem and several more...

Soooo... More than a year later? What DID happen with this? I wish DO would follow up. Either outcome would make an interesting story.

As a surgical nurse, I can tell you that there is no way this is true or even possible. The abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and roux en y (gastric bypass) are two totally different surgeries. The instruments and set-up for each are totally different. Not to mention that the former is done superficially while the latter is done inside the abdominal cavity.

I'm no great fan of Alexander's work by any means, but this story is a crock of crap. There's no way this happened.

I have inside knowledge and know for an absolute fact, that this accusation was total BS and the case got thrown out by the judge almost immediately. This is just another attempt by a malpractice attorney to leach off of a successful and hard-working doctor and try to extort a quick buck. At the very least, the author of this article Eric Nicholson, owes both Dr. Alexander and Forest Park Medical Center an apology. Both the surgeon and hospital are top notch. But of course, expecting a journalist (i use that term loosely) to follow up and correct his mis-informed and slanderous article is obviously too much to ask for.

What price vanity?  Plastic surgery always has horrible results.  Those nasty lip implants are the all-time worst.

"That was a problem both because the procedure wasn't what she had agreed to and because Dickerson had received a gastric bypass three years before. "

This could be viewed as insensitive, but another problem was that the patient needed a tummy tuck in the first place. I realize some folks are more prone than others to obesity but the large majority of these conditions result from diet and lifestyle decisions made by the individual.

 @Myrna.Minkoff-Katz

What is your fascination obsession with grouping and stereotyping things?

Always has horrible results?

The procedure that corrected my brother's deviated septum was cosmetic surgery but now both he and his wife sleep better, and he can breathe easier.

My ex-gf's boob job allows her to make twice as much per night at her pole, she has had no complications

What about people who have had their burn scars lessened removed allowing them a shot at normalcy?

I have had several non-malignant moles removed, purely for cosmetic and personal reasons. No regrets there.

As usual you speak without thought or knowledge.

@craig.thomas42 Mountain out of a mole hill.  My comment was about lip implants and other silly surgeries and the like, certainly not about burn scars, you douche bag.

@Myrna.Minkoff-Katz @craig.thomas42 Awwww did us get their little troll feeling hurt when people reacted to what you said instead of what you now claim to have meant. For someone who claims to be a liberal you sure don't have any grasp on tolerance or understanding. In fact just about every time you come here to post something it is to pass judgement on someone.
