'The Most Corrupt Apple Store in America' is in NorthPark

Categories: Technology

Apple.jpg
Gizmodo Wednesday had an anonymous tell-all from former employees of what it describes as "the most corrupt Apple store in America."

Where might that store be, you ask? NorthPark. And how did the NorthPark Apple store earn such a notable distinction? Well, allegedly, according to some anonymous guy (so you know this must be the real stuff):

The general manager made the store sell discounted computers to a plastic surgeon in exchange for a stomach stapling procedure, among other transgressions.

The Genius staff "wildly and shamelessly exploited the store's lax and easily defrauded return and exchange policies for a virtually unlimited supply of Apple hardware," many of which they destroyed for the fun of it.

The staff at a nearby call center "drink whiskey and do coke all night."

For irritating customers, they would pour whiskey into customers' Macs, erasing their hard drives, or use the hard drives as skateboards.

I've been in an Apple store exactly once, and it was the one in NorthPark. The Genius who helped me was an asshole. None of this surprises me.

I worked at the North Park Store for two years and never saw any of these types of actions or activities.

My experience with the North Park store was great! The Genius bar knew what they were doing. They helped me haul in my gigantic Mac desktop unit. I'm amazed at this 'honor.' I guess I'll just shake my head and mumble, wondering how I got there on a lucky day.

Wow their call center folks sure know how to party!

I've shopped at, and used the "Genius Bar," at the Apple Store in Willowbend Mall (Plano) several times and been very pleased. Maybe this particular store has, or had, problems, or maybe not - don't have any personal experience with them as a consumer. But you can't paint all Apple Stores with the same brush.

I believe it. The Customer Service is the worst, especially when you look like me. That's why I go to The Knox store where they won't look at me like I should be cleaning the place.

The dummies at the Northpark store didn't even know that the Jawbone Jambox (which they sell) streams music wirelessly via bluetooth, which is like......you know......the product's main feature 'n stuff.

Apple stores calling their employees "Geniuses" is kinda like when a big fat guy has the nickname "Tiny": Pure comedic irony.

I bet none of the comments below every worked at an Apple Store, let alone the one at NorthPark. I used to work there and can confirm the surgery thing.

This article is such crap, and this is the last one I will tolerate to read. Quit pumping out shit. Please, get new writers and editors. You just lost a follower.

This article is completely ridiculous. It is complete satire. Go ahead and hide your source it's your legal right, but next time talk to more than one ex-employee. Maybe do more research and actually verify the information, oh wait, you're a reporter. You don't care what is actual truth. Anything to get a story even if it's not true. Who cares? Let the public figure it out for themselves. I hope Apple finds out about this article and sues you. Get some morals, Eric, and verify your information before submitting your story. Your editor needs to get some morals too.

Um...  did anyone not know that things like this went on?

Here's a secret:  every single employee in every single service industry HATES YOU.

Hates you with the burning passion of a thousand fiery suns.

Direct customer service is the lowest, most demeaning, completely worthless and thankless job there is, doubly so in the technology industry.  There are many reasons for this:  companies hire immature kids and give them authority beyond their skills; aging managers don't understand either advances in technology or the attitudes of their employees; customers refuse to recognize the limits of technology or the logistics of repair.

The employee almost always loses in these interactions.  Managers get moved, customers get new equipment from corporate.  Employees get fired at the drop of a hat and replaced by a $10/hour high school graduate.  The frustration that the employees feel leads directly to the things this article describes, as well as the negativity towards customers that the employees feel and act on.  All three groups contribute to this issue.  There's no excuse for the behavior, even the weak justifications that all three groups give for the revenge they seek on the others.

Having purchased one IPod and used my wife's Mac book a few times, I realized that Apple products are over priced garbage. I'm would not be surprised that Apple employees are a reflection of the products they sell.

"Apple Store employees helped me cheat on my girlfriend a lot." Really dude? Let's not overreach here. Are they responsible for childhood obesity and terrorism, too?

I know it's their job to get me to buy something, but it was the way the guy handled it. He was totally condescending and treated me like shit. I was amazed at how I was being handled. I knew what the problem was, but I just couldn't figure out how to fix it. This guy basically blew me off and told me it was a completely different issue, which he was wrong about.

Their jobs are to get you to buy something else, something new. I'm not surprised by the claims, but rather Dallas Observer for not getting another person willing to back the story and submit their name.

even though this is shoddy reporting, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the northpark mall. I went in there once for an iphone problem and the asshole "genius" I dealt with told me it was a hardware problem when I already explained that I knew it was a software issue. Turns out I was right, and fixed the iphone myself, no thanks to the genius who told me I had to buy a new phone. Northpark apple store.... never again. The other store in Dallas is great though

I find this somewhat hard to believe. I'm sure the Northpark Apple store might have a couple of flaws with their customer service as do most other companies. It's just not a reliable source. Who knows though? It might be true.

I use Macs for audio production; PCs just don't cut it for me for that application. That being said, I NEVER buy Apple products from the Apple Store. You're just asking to get raped.

@Scruffygeist he linked it but most people that are bitching at him didn't feel like they needed to click it. Seriously, I get tired of assholes that rip on the bloggers here, yet don't fully read what they're saying.

talldentonboi
talldentonboi

@Scruffygeist the employees aren't shitty because of that, they're shitty because they're bitter because the managers there ignore policy and give away free stuff. Imagine you're an employee anywhere (any retail place) and a dickwad customer broke their expensive item and came to you wanting a free one. You calmly and politely explain the policy and even offer some sort of a discount, to which they reply "let me speak to your manager." the manager comes in, barely says 2 words and hands them a free item. All while said customer is looking at you like you just boinked their spouse and they're getting retribution for it. THAT'S why employees at Northpark don't have much pride in their work. Why should you uphold policy, i.e. do your job well, when someone comes in and undermines your authority, stripping away your power to work? For the record, not only did I work at an Apple Store, I worked at Northpark. We once made 1mil in one quarter. We were the first store in the whole company to do that.

@000FFF read the gizmodo article. There are plenty people posting there and posting names of people that worked there. The gawker sites do a great job of bringing stuff like this to light. They had a really good batch of responses about people working at Target a while back, pretty good read.

@Double-O-Joe Apple store employees are pretty well compensated from what I've heard, as far as retail goes. What's the starting pay, like at least $15/hr?

talldentonboi
talldentonboi

@Double-O-Joe Tabernacle. I didn't hate my customers...well, not all of them. This is Northpark...however, I had a passion for the work and it wasn't until i realized that they cared more about pretty faces and ass kissers than really good workers that i became bitter. That and...the threats.

@talldentonboi  @Scruffygeist "Why should you uphold policy, i.e. do your job well, when someone comes in and undermines your authority, stripping away your power to work?"

Because that is your job.  You have no authority or power, you're a pawn and your role is to offer minimal relief.  Trophies are no longer given out for being on a last place soccer team.  You actually have to earn rewards by consistently "upholding policy" and "doing your job well".  Do that and you survive.  Don't, good luck.

Scruffygeist
Scruffygeist

@talldentonboi Not saying you're wrong, but you're essentially making me point for me too. Management stealing or abusing leniant policies is still stealing, and I would blame Apple's piss-poor policies for it--and it still leads to a higher percentage of crappy employees because of either direct theft or horrible management driving the good ones away.

Double-O-Joe
Double-O-Joe

I don't know the specifics of Apple's pay: never worked for them, just several other technology companies.  Best day of my career was when I transitioned from customer-facing second line tech support to the IT department.
