A Plea to Republicans: Please Stop Wearing Those Ugly Texas Flag Shirts in Public

Categories: Politics

TexasSwagRNC.JPG
Texas' delegation at the Republican National Convention seems to have mostly behaved itself in Tampa this week. Soon-to-be Senator Ted Cruz lobbed overblown rhetoric at the Obama administration, and Rick Perry said he'd "absolutely" consider running again, but that's standard fare. At least no one tossed peanuts and racial insults at a black CNN reporter.

That said, the Texas delegation managed to send a very clear message to the world that we dress like every day is Flag Day. I'm talking, of course, about those godawful Western-style Texas flag shirts that appear to have been the mandatory uniform for Texas Republicans. I noticed it first in New York magazine of all places, then there were a couple more in a post by our sister paper in Miami. There are more than that in that horrible "Eyes of Texas" video.

We get it: These are people proud of their state and that the Lone Star is a symbol of that, but a lot of people have pride in their states while also maintaining some sartorial dignity. So, a plea to Texas Republicans and anyone else who has one of the shirts hanging in a closet: Just light it on fire. Do it for Texas.

Makes me wonder if the writer of the article is from someplace other than Texas (New York City???). As a proud Texan, I will wear mine anytime I like.

As a native and proud Texan, those shirts embarrass the shit out of me.  Our flag deserves better.

I see cheeseheads.

Don't wear cowboys garb to Cowboys games?  Rangers stuff to Rangers games?

What should the delegates wear to political conventions?

better than disfiguring "Old Glory" in a similar way.  I don't know, maybe it's a bit hokey, but what's to awful about it?

I wonder why the Observer doesn't write a similar article mocking members of the hip-hop community like they do Republicans. I'm sure it is more acceptable to bash Republicans than people who are part of hip-hop culture because Republicans are so violent and hateful towards gays and women. The lack of malice shown to people wearing jeans down to their knees, dredlocks, gold teeth, and hair extensions must have the fact to do with them being so pleasant to be around.

My god!  All the usual crack-pots have flash-mobbed to this thread.  I'm glad I've popped in to add some sanity to the discussion.

Fox should send in all black news crews wearing George W. Bush rubber masks onto the Dem Convention floor, as a nuance check.

see how well their racism decoder rings work.

"At least no one tossed peanuts and racial insults at a black CNN reporter." ... no but we had quite a few democrats... regular folks and celebrities alike taking to Twitter wishing death by hurricane to Republicans at the convention... just saying.

wait, question: do texas flag short-running-shorts pass muster? what about texas flag clothes worn in an ironic fashion? like at an obama rally or a bicycle polo match (polo played on fixies...about as hipster as possible)? or what about if you're traveling in Europe or some other back-asswards place, where they don't know what freedom means?

Drop the shirts and go all Texas flag shorts! Klassy, ya'll!

Does that make the State Fair's Big Tex a republican? Probably would be IRL, hahaha! Oh well, that a part of living in a red state. What about Democrats? You know a bunch of old men and women wear them, too; some who wear their lone star and stripe proudly while flipping off the Republicans. (I

@holmantx Well it looked to me like the liberals wore Vagina costumes during the RNC conventions...so I guess that is part of the Northern States new Flag design.

@Cessa You would've had a pretty good post, except for the use of "just saying." So sorry. You almost stuck the landing.

@Cessa See, you need a secret decoder ring to divine racism from all manner of things Republican.

One that ignores the above guy's race whilst insulting his redneckedness and point of origin (ha!).

@EricNicholsonSucks Don't worry, he'll have completely forgotten that he wrote this post by then, and will be totally preoccupied by Chris Matthews style leg-thrills.

Thankfully there are more 'vaginas' at the DNC than the Racists and Aryan Nationalists Convention.

Liberal men love vaginas and the women who own them, but from the tenor (or is that castrati?) of your comment, we can rest assured that Republican men are terrified of vajayjays.

Well I wasn't going for overly eloquent, nor was I trying to impress or please everyone. To each their own.

@ResistanceIsOhm  @EricNicholson4 okay fine.  Tx flag shirts have been around since the 70s and were a little edgy so the utes went with them.  No doubt the Observer embraced them back then since the old folks knee-jerked over possible desecration, or at the least - flippancy toward our beloved Texas.

Now, we're the old folks and I hate that when it happens.  But I agree, the rebellious thrill is gone and the design is dated.

However, it beats UT burnt orange regalia. What's up with those people?
