Receptionist Claims Dallas Doctor Fired Her for Refusing to Get an Abortion

Update on Aug. 10: Got an email response from Nalini Samuel, who works in Prabhakar's office.

Haven't been served yet. Would love to comment- completely untrue- shakedown to get money. Ask her about her criminal record- Dr. Prabhakar is pro life.

Original post: Christina Garcia began working as an $11-per-hour receptionist for Dr. Meenakshi Prabhakar, a North Dallas internist, in August 2010. Six months later, she found out she was pregnant.

When she mentioned that fact to her Prabhakar, Garcia claims in a lawsuit filed recently in Dallas County and first reported by Courthouse News, he ordered her to get an abortion, offering to pay for the procedure and college expenses. She would need to vow to take birth control pills in the future, but he would pay for those too, the suit claims. When she refused, Garcia says she was fired.

The filing doesn't offer an explanation as to why Prabhakar was allegedly so eager for her employee to terminate her pregnancy. Garcia's attorney, W.D. Masterson, wasn't available, but when I told his receptionist I was from the Observer, she responded with an enthusiastic "Haaaaay!" So that's nice.

The receptionist at Prabhakar's office was less enthusiastic but told me to email Prabhakar, which I did. I'll update it when I get a response.

uh.....well, I don't know about the doc....but the woman put herself into pregnancy...then she must have addressed it to the doctor, maybe asked for advice...and maybe he gave her friendly advice and an offer to help....face it....$11 per hour is chicken feed against a scum bag lawyer shake down lawsuit that will get her a minimum of $35,000 in a settlement agreement.

don't blame the doc so fast.....

-" shakedown to get money"

"Ask her about her criminal record-  Dr. Prabhakar is pro life."

didnt check her record but checked dr prabhakars... he had the biggest malpractice lawsuit in the state of tx a few years ago...which he lost... $17.5 million

What's with all of this half-baked physician bashing (sans actual facts) by questionable employees etc. in the Observer lately? Some front desk receptionists are very helpful in a doctor's office, but really, the poor reception  folks are not pivitolal or paid  enough to merit all of this  "attention".

Nicholson, this sentence has a pronoun problem:

"When she mentioned that fact to her Prabhakar, Garcia claims in a lawsuit filed recently in Dallas County and first reported by Courthouse News, he ordered her to get an abortion, offering to pay for the procedure and college expenses."

@observist Shut up!  We read the Observer for opinion, not perfect prose and grammar.

Since you have the Dr in the story referred to by both masculine and feminine pronouns, perhaps this is a case of sexual confusion and not anything more sinister?

Other than that, I agree with observist, interesting choice of random lawsuit.

@Mantikos   "When she mentioned that fact to her...he ordered her to..."  That's what the comment is referring to.

@RTGolden all of you are so insular and shielded, I'm Outraged that you don't know the gender of Meenakshi.  You're all backwoods rednecks!

@1dailyreader No, it isn't.  Second paragraph refers to Dr as he.  Third paragraph refers to Dr. by name and then as her.  Your first reference is an obvious typo, as I don't think the writer is trying to establish that Garcia owns Prabhakhar.

Does she have any proof?

Sounds like a lazy Obama voter trying to get a paycheck.

@movinondown Damn, I was expecting to gig one of you about letting markets be free.   Actually, I support the woman's right to do with her body what she chooses, though the offer to pay for college seems like a nice temptation.    I don't think your Obama crack is cricket, but your call for proof is very fair.

@scottindallas sounds more like she lets some dude do whatever HE pleases with her body....she just got a quart of oil too much in the crankcase.

Interesting selection of random lawsuit story.  Right-to-Life vs. Right-to-Work cage match!

@observist right to work vs freedom to choose, she's choosing life, despite the temptation of the college offer.   I support her choice.  I think we're often ethnocentric about the ills of early motherhood, but the Latins have a point, she'll be a grandma by 40, which biologically at least makes more sense than having her first at that age, fewer birth defects, fewer stretchmarks, and more time to enjoy her own life, rather than wasting her 20's in a belabored adolescence.

@scottindallas It's not just Latin's having kids at a young age.  I see plenty of other young girls of all races with kids on their hip.  You are right though about having your kids early.  Once they're gown and out of the house, you still have plenty of time and usually have more money to spend.
