Update at 10:55 a.m.: It's now officially official. The USADA has formally instituted a lifetime ban against Armstrong and erasing all competitive results since Aug. 1, 1999. That includes his seven Tour victories. From the USADA's statement:

Numerous witnesses provided evidence to USADA based on personal knowledge acquired, either through direct observation of doping activity by Armstrong,or through Armstrong's admissions of doping to them that Armstrong used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone during the period from before 1998 through 2005, and that he had previously used EPO, testosterone and hGH through 1996. Witnesses also provided evidence that Lance Armstrong gave to them, encouraged them to use and administered doping products or methods, including EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone during the period from 1999 through 2005. Additionally, scientific data showed Mr. Armstrong's use of blood manipulation including EPO or blood transfusions during Mr. Armstrong's comeback to cycling in the 2009 Tour de France.

Original post: It always seemed a little bit too perfect: Plano native Lance Armstrong, a very good but not quite elite cyclist battles life-threatening cancer, then returns to the sport and miraculously dominates for nearly a decade. That narrative, chipped away at for years by doping allegations, was dealt a more or less final blow last night.

Last night, the AP reported that, three days after a judge tossed his challenge to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, Armstrong had stopped fighting the charges that he used performance enhancing drugs. That quickly led to an announcement from USADA chief executive Travis Tygart that Armstrong will be barred from cycling for life and stripped of his seven Tour de France titles.

Armstrong still denies the doping charges and said the USADA doesn't have the authroity to strip his Tour titles. You can read his full statement here.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough,' " Armstrong said in a statement. "For me, that time is now."

In other boring 3rd tier sports, the Chinese have won the badminton finals, and the USA rowing team is boycotting water. Also, the Archery finals will be held this week in Redneck, Alabama!

There is no doubt the sport of cycling has been dirty.

There is evidence that the riders who competed with Lance, and those who rode with Lance on his team, doped. Several of these teammates have admitted that the team, including Lance, used performance enhancing techinques/drugs that were not legal.

While I know that Lance has never tested positive to a drug test, and want to believe that Lance is honest when he says he has never used PED, it is really, REALLY difficult to believe that Lance has been clean, that his claims are the truth.

I saw him give it all to win those tours. Lance was incredible!

But look, the evidence, even without a positive drug result, is hard to argue with.

Lance's waving the white flag of surrender only reinforces that view.

We all saw Lance win the Tour de France. He never tested positive for drugs. Enough said!

I would think that it's up to the Tour de France folks (with whom he's always had a "prickly" relationship, I'm told) to make the decision to strip the Titles from Armstrong.  Does the USADA ban make that de rigueur?

Actually, he tested positive for cortiocortisone in 1999 but long after produced a back-dated prescription from a doctor.  Also, 10 former teammates, including George Hincapie, were prepared to testify against him.  This way, he gets to play the victim.  LiveStrong, yes, but it can be done without idolizing Armstrong.

Maybe Lance can ask his good friend George W. Bush for help.

The UCI nor the Tour de  France has striped any titles away.

@TexOHara The USADA cant do shit but ban him. They have no authority to strip him of his titles on the the UCI or The Tour de France itself can do that. The USADA may not recognize his 7 titles, but every other group/person in the world still does

@GuitarPlayer If an earthquake in China swallows an entire village 50 years from today, will it still GWB's fault?

@rowingisfun if they haven't officially taken them, it is a matter of logistics. they will be taken.

maybe now that he's officially admitting that he will no longer deny being a cheater, will people stop idolizing him? he was already not worthy of it, but now there can be no ambiguity about it.

@ScottsMerkin  @TexOHara What will you say when the "Tour" takes those titles away? Just because they haven't done it within 24 hours doesn't mean they will not. Come on, you are smarter than that. I think....

@James080 I don't know. Where did I say it was Bush's fault. Jump the gun much James?

@anon @rowingisfun sorry little buddy, he is not admitting to cheating, he is saying that he wont be the USADA bc they outcome has been predetermined. Read the press realease. Being that he never failed 1 single drug test and was tested nearly every day, and L'equipe tried taking him down, all there is there is heresay and he said she said. unlike the rest of those winners who did test positve, There isnt one ounce of physical eveidence that Lance did. LiveSTRONG

@GuitarPlayer @TexOHara backstepping where? I didnt back step at all. in fact i presented more evidence to the contrary of your post. Fuck man, get some comprehension and pull the stick out of your ass

@GuitarPlayer @TexOHara ummm comprehension slow today? I said "still" which means currently. All these new orgs are just printing untrue statements. As far just bc they havent done it within 24 hrs is a joke. They have had since 2005 to strip him of on or all of his titles. They haven't, bc they found no evidence, they have no failed tests. The USADAs crusade is one of heresay and payoffs to others to help them bring him down.

@GuitarPlayer Catch up on current events. GWB has been out of office for three and a half years, and has said repeatedly he wants nothing more to do with government or politics.  Armstrong recently sought help from John McCain, who is still in the Senate and is on the committee that has oversight of USADA. McCain declined to help.  What exactly did you think former president Bush could do for Armstrong? Or is this another "Yeah. Whatever" moment for you.
