Dena Schlosser, the Plano Baby Chopper, is Outed then Fired from Walmart. Now What?

Categories: Schutze

The moment Channel 8 reporter Teresa Woodard opened her mouth to tell viewers Dena Schlosser, the Plano baby chopper, had been seen working as a checker at Walmart, you knew Dena Schlosser was already no longer working at Walmart.

Of course they fired her before the story ever hit the air. What choice did they have?

Eight years ago Schlosser hacked both arms off her 10-month-old daughter with a butcher knife because she heard God telling her to do it. Once you know that about her, it's probably hard not to get the shivers when she asks you if you found everything you need.

But it's terribly sad that she had to get sacked. Here she was, working, trying to put together a productive life. She's not a criminal. She's a crazy person. Through the miracle of brain research and pharmacology, she can be rendered not crazy. Modern medicine can reach out, take her by the hand and lead her back from the gates of hell, all the way to Walmart.

I don't get why people hate her. I do get why people might hate Michael Lee Page, the Wisconsin Sikh shooter. From what we know early on, he wasn't crazy. He was evil. Evil and crazy are different.

Hating people for being crazy is part and parcel of the problem. Then we feel justified in doing less to help them. Then they wander around downtown crazy until they flip out and do something terrible again. Then we hate them again and rationalize not helping them.

How is that a winning formula?

The person who put all of this best may be Kimberly Bigler-Burnett of Frisco, a commenter on the WFAA website who said:

"I think it unchristian to deprive her of her livelihood and to continue her life. Just having the knowledge of what she did to her child will be with her the rest of her life no matter what judge or jury of what people say."

Bigler-Burnett spoke to the same issue I'm talking about, the extinction of compassion.

"If everyone including the ones who voiced their views on getting Walmart to fire her would VOICE it for Mental Health facilities here in the US, perhaps she could have been helped when she was having her mental issues. Her child could have been saved!"

Yeah, maybe. Certainly taunting schizophrenics and tossing them out on the street is not making anybody's babies safer. At the very least, it would seem like keeping Dena Schlosser stable is the safer course.

I groaned when I saw the WFAA piece, not because I didn't get the story from a news business point of view. Obviously I get the story. You find a famous baby-hacker working at Walmart, it's a story. People will watch or read the heck out of that sucker.

And I know that in this day and age, a lot of stuff goes on the air and gets published with something less than scholarly attention to balance. As an assistant city editor once said to me in my youth which was a long time ago, "Hey, kid, we're not gonna bind it in pigskin."

But the piece was so breathless, so shocking-news, so This just in! There she was, the poor lady, in somebody's cell phone photo, slaving away at Walmart, and here was Teresa Woodward in her excellent makeup and wardrobe telling us how this crazy bitch cut off the bay's arms because ... get this! ... "She said God told her to."

God! She tried to get God in on it! It would be one thing if she said it was Rick Perry. But trying to get God in trouble! This just goes too far.

There has been balancing coverage elsewhere since then, quoting shrinks about how damaging it's going to be to toss this lady out of her job brusquely and send her back to some shit apartment to stare at her medicine bottles. You get a sense of how much effort it takes for Dena Schlosser just to get up in the morning, push back her demons and trudge off to work. This lady's got demons that make most of our demons look like girl scouts.

We need to leave this poor person the hell alone. The proper response, when that nosy customer spied her at Walmart, would have been to reach out, touch her on the sleeve and say, "You look wonderful. I'm so glad you have a good job."

By the way, speaking of the Wisconsin shooter, one "expert" on WFAA the other night pronounced the religious denomination of the victims as "Sheik," and I think Gloria Campos last night may have pronounced it as "Sick." Talk about not being part of the solution.

I'm not blaming Walmart for firing Schlosser. I have my own feet of clay here. If I had run into her, I might have said, "OK, I am going to touch you on the arm now, but you are not going to touch me on my arm." I hope I wouldn't say that, but ... you know. She's scary.

Scary people. They are always with us. What are we going to do about it? How do we think hating them makes anything better?

You don't get why people hate her?? She's a baby killer! Who cares why she did it. She did it. That poor baby suffered too. Also, if it was true that her husband refused to let her take her medication regularly, then he should have been held accountable for the baby's death too!

She might be free, but I wouldn't want her living next to me. Sorry, but that's just the way it is

I feel no sympathy for this butcher.

I feel no sympathy for this butcher, even if it was stated she was crazy.

Must be sumpin bad in TX water....you also got Andrea Yates, who said God told her to drown her kids; the nut in Tyler who used the same excuse; and the nut in Crawford who said God told him to invade Iraq.

Just burn her at the stake, or dunk her till she drowns.  That's what the Jesus establishment did for years.

To add to Kimberley's wisdom - why doe the US Bible Belt spawn such intolerant swine?

Jim, Teresa Woodard's report is a model in objectivity compared to Brett Shipp's leading and biased segment on Schlosser.  I think his report may have appeared before Woodard's, but I'm not sure.  I searched for Shipp's report on WFAA's website, and it didn't appear.  Not sure why it would be scrubbed, unless for legal reasons (?).  If you didn't see it you should try to find it ... the guy's heavy use of inflection is ridiculous.  Byron Harris isn't much better by recently chasing after the guy who's driving away in a pickup truck.  Byron looked like a wobbly-legged lamb.  I mean ... how about some personal if not professional dignity?

God "tells" millions of people in the Bible Belt to hate.

Evil is as evil does, crazy or no.

That gal ought never take another breath as a free woman.

Mr Schutze, you exhibit the same goofy perspective that kept her from her meeting the Big Needle in Huntsville.  Some dude, with a similar load of Krazee Puffs in his skull, shoots the hell outta people and he is evil, while a woman who murders her baby is just a sick woman in need of sympathy.  Only in the fevered imaginings of the sadly duped.  Both need to be put down like calves with severe birth defects.

Maybe she can start a talk show with that woman from San Antonio who ate he baby's brain using a sword for a spoon because "the devil told her to."

Yeah. They can call it "My Voice Nation"

she was a checker at WalMart because there were no jobs open in the butcher meat dept.

What type of rehabilitation is effective enough for schizophrenics to be reintegrated into society? Short of lobotomies or putting them all on an island together? Someone would probably turn it into a reality show.

IS THAT A NO ON YOU GIVING HER A JOB, JIMBO?

The idea behind assuming another identity is to relocate, which she should have done. This poor woman does need to be able to get on with her life. Those of you who can't see her within society or fathom the result of her sickness, obviously are perfectly healthy and never had a family member or parent suffer from depression. You are all truly blessed and should thank your God instead of fighting over how to pronounce the word, Sikh. Idiots.

Does anyone seriously think she is going to go postal (or wal-y) on her co-workers?  It is just plain mean and evil to treat ex-offenders and ex-felons, like lepers and demand a resignation, just because you can.  Wow, way to be big man/fat girl on campus. It just shows how small our society is becoming intellectually.

Snapping pics and posting them, of someone who was damaged but is trying to repair their life, is the evil side of social media.  it won't be long until we are forced to build city's specifically  for ex-offenders and ex-felons so they can live, work, or go to school in peace. There are so many, they could easily fill up several cities and many small towns and own the car dealerships, bakeries, banks, housing or work at the Wal-mart.

The state should have just put her to death, and spared us, and her the grief. Who would hire this thing?  How is she out and working at a Walmart after she cut her babies arms off?  Maybe the Walmart in hell needs help.

I don't care what the reason, she cut off her baby's arms.  Whether she's crazy, depressed, evil or just having a bad day.  That crime is so egregious, she should NEVER see a free day again.  Oh, we can make her un-crazy with drugs and therapy?  That yo-yo goes both ways.  Imagine cutting the arms off a screaming baby using a butcher knife.  Not a quick, clean cut, but holding the innocent child down and sawing the arms off.  That's not evil?  If that's not evil, there is no evil.  She shouldn't be free, much less working at WalMart.  Although that is probably some form of punishment, it's not enough.  We should all be protected from Monsters like her, and those that support them.

And if she hacked off a customers face and stored them in the freezer section you'd say "Something should have been done!"

You harp about people not having guns and then you want a woman who cut off a baby's arms to be free to work at Walmart... good job at being consistent.

Unfortunately, this is something people with a record have to deal with every day. They have either served their time, been cleared, or otherwise done what legally has been required of them. Yet, to many people refuse to let them move on a live their lives. And, I'm not just talking about people who have committed violent crimes. We, as a society, need to learn to let these people move on with their lives and quit punishing them after the legal system is done with them.

to "uupercasematt" below (firefox or whatever it's called won't let me respond dierctly): Pronunciation is "seek." Websters. You expressed an opinion without first looking it up. So did I. I won, because I am a morally superior person, not to mention a Democrat. Face it. You will always be wrong. We will always be right.

I suspect that Walmart has a wrongful termination suit, or perhaps should.  I agree that the advocates of such rigid religiosity are the most culpable.

Of course we can all ignore the fact that the husband and the pastor who told her that her depression was demonic possession and did not get her any help are walking around free of judgement

Also it great that she is rehabilitating, and trying to function in society, but if it takes all those pills to keep her right, then we are one bad day away from her doing soe crazy shit again.  Why is it again that she isnt allowed to see her other kids...oh thats right, the state is worried that something could happen again

I dont hate her because she is crazy, I hate her because she cut off a fucking babies arms.

The likelihood is that a Terrell State Hospital worker recognized her, snapped the photo and alerted Channel 8.  If that is indeed the case, then that person ought to be fired from the hospital!  The poor woman was making an honest effort to make the best of her life and this turn of events will not serve her or our society well.

I guess I must also be off the liberal deep end, because if we aren't locking people up, we need to reintegrate them into society.  Leaving them in some sort of social limbo is asking for something like that to happen again.

SHE CUT OFF HER BABY'S ARMS.

No fucking sympathy for her. Fuck her. I don't care if she's remorseful or on meds or apologetic or hard-working or makes the best cupcakes around--fuck her, she deserves to be judged for that the rest of her life.

You're either trolling for page views again or you've really done off the liberal deep end this time.
