AG Greg Abbott's Daughter Killed Something, and He Posted a Photo to Prove It

That girl you see above with the gun and dead antelope (or is it an oryx? Unfair Park is baffled by nature) blackbuck is Audrey Abbott. That guy you see in the Jeep, grinning, is her dad, Attorney General Greg Abbott. I don't really have a lot to add, save what our AG wrote on his Facebook page. "Proud of my daughter! She is a true believer in the 2nd amendment."

What bothers me the most about the picture is the two of them with the big grins on their faces like a toothpaste commercial with a beautiful grand animal is dead in front of them.

Yep, when the Second Amendment was being written they were all discussing around the table if sport hunting was going to be preserved because of their actions. There were no greater motivations for the language like invasion, war, killing game for food in those days, it was all about making sure a girl (who sure looks like a minor without every single Constitutional right yet) can bag a trophy head.

So a dad brought his daughter hunting.  Why is this news?

The responses to this article and picture are hilarious.

She didn't even have to change out of her nightie for the hunt.   Looks like they've conveniently cropped out the fence enclosing the tiny yard in which the blackbuck was shot.

Gee, why not use your daughter for a cheap political moment? Great job Dad in teaching her just how to promote/sell oneself....

By the looks of things, this "hunt" was just exhausting, look at how much work they did to track and get the kill, she even tore the knee in her jeans!

what, those jeans already had a hole in the knee, and the loose tank top didn't get in her way?

wow, what a lesson in the outdoors! Hooray "Second Amendment rights"!

The blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) is an antelope species native to the Indian Subcontinent that has been classified as endangered by IUCN since 2003, as the blackbuck range has decreased sharply during the 20th century.[1]

The blackbuck is the only living species of the genus Antilope.[2] Its generic name stems from the Latin word antalopus, a horned animal.[3] The species cervicapra is composed of the Latin words capra, she-goat and cervus, deer.[4]

RTGolden
RTGolden

@cynicaloldbastard .....and the Pronghorn is the only surviving member of the FAMILY Antilocapridae.  What is the point of making this distinction?

In the case of the blackbuck, exotic game ranches (where the game is usually hunted) and exotic game preserves (where the game is usually not hunted) are arguably the best hope for endangered game species of animals to survive.  I don't like the 'canned' hunts one finds at many Texas game ranches, and can't believe anyone would pay to shoot a penned animal.  Much cheaper and just as satisfying to shoot a paper target.  Also keep in mind, the exotic game ranches here in Texas are ADDING to the world population and world habitat of blackbuck.  If you want to rail about the danger to the survival of this species, rail at the policies in India that are reducing it's native range to unsupportable sizes.

In the case of the pronghorn, controlled hunts are the only predation of any real effect native herds have.  without controlled hunting the pronghorn would overpopulate and strip the land of the ability to support the population (along with the deer, elk and moose populations that share the range) leading to lengthy periods of starvation and disease and long tortuous deaths for the animals.

Rail at the AG for grandstanding, for subjecting his daughter to public scrutiny, or for his idiotic policies.  Leave hunting out of it.

@RTGolden "keep in mind, the exotic game ranches here in Texas are ADDING to the world population and world habitat of blackbuck." unfortunately a recent federal regulation pushed by the environmental and anti-hunting lobbyists has struck the death knell for these ranches

" I don't like the 'canned' hunts one finds at many Texas game ranches, and can't believe anyone would pay to shoot a penned animal."

the vast majority don't pen the animals, do you have credible evidence of that happening?

@MattL11 Sure ain't a white-tail.  No, that's a boutique hunting experience.  Many of these deer exist thanks to these boutique ranches, so I don't criticize too strongly.  But, it's far from the backwoods experience hunters I know relish.

Double-O-Joe
Double-O-Joe

@scottindallas  @MattL11 The whole "hunters are conservationists" argument is true in a lot of cases, but it rings a bit hollow here.  The underlying reasoning, if spelled out, would read "We're keeping this species alive so we can have the pleasure of killing it".

Yes, the species still exists thanks to these ranches.  However, its existence is solely at the pleasure of those who own and control access to the stock.  That kind of "conservation" serves no natural purpose except to salve the consciences of those who back one up to a fence line to shoot it.

Slow news day, eh Eric? Hey folks, the next time you eat a hamburger or a chicken sandwich think about this; how did that piece of meat got into your hands? How about your ham sandwich? The truth is, this animal HAD a chance. 300 heads of cattle, in a single line, each being systematically knocked out, throats slit and then skinned alive, didn't.

 @GuitarPlayer

Guitar raises an interesting point.

Since the hunting and consumption of meat have been an essential part of human activity from time immemorial, why don't more sportsmen (or sportsdaughters) shoot  traditional food animals rather than endangered species?

I think father and daughter Abbott might have avoided this flapdoodle had Audrey bagged a chicken or a steer. A free-range chicken certainly would have provided more challenge to her markswomanship than a boutique blackbuck; free-range chickens can be very smart and elusive. And if red meat was needed for the Abbott table, Angus is very low in fat and much tastier than blackbuck. There's certainly more meat on its bones.

 @chad

I propose a taste test to settle this.

I'll provide the premium angus steaks, chad, if you'll provide the blackbuck steaks. Be forewarned, there's not a whole lot of meat on a blackbuck, so premium cuts might be scarce. And the taste has been described as gamey and sage-flavored, so you might want to look into proper preparation and seasoning.

As for fat, I get my nutritional information from the same source every other re-blooded American gets it: McDonald's

@bmarvel  @GuitarPlayer Because Cows are slow, chickens are stupid, wild pigs are tough (unless you shoot the babies)

and I think if there is anything to be critical of let it be, daddy putting words in his daughters mouth, thats bullshit, she is doing what her family has shown her to be fun, it has nothing to do with the constitution, and way less to do with guns than you might think

I blame Walt Disney for all you defenders of the precious animals, defending the cute ones, or some how deciding at what point shooting becomes and "fair" sport

bmarvel
bmarvel topcommenter like.author.displayName 1 Like

@gmit I take it you've never hung around a farm, gmit, nor had a grandmother who raised chickens. So I'll pass over your misinformed first paragraph.

I don't have any quarrel with any daddy taking his daughter hunting, nor with guns. My father hunted, took me hunting, and what he shot was served on our table. (Venison's tough unless prepared properly.)

But I deny that a  calf or a piglet is less cute than a blackbuck. Nor, given the circumstances -- beautique hunting, and all -- any less difficult to shoot.

Finally, I am an enthusiastic carnivore. My argument is that if father had let his daughter shoot the fatted caif, we wouldn't be having this stupid discussion

@GuitarPlayer really?  this blackbuck was killed for *sport*, not for food.  apples and oranges.  why do people get a kick out of killing animals "just because they can"?

CraigT42
CraigT42

@Joejoethedogfaceboy Even animals killed for sport (No scare quotes needed) can be, and often are eaten.  The only difference now is that the Blackbuck's death not only will provide nourishment, it also provided some sport, and some father-daughter bonding time.

You may not enjoy hunting, to be honest I don't either. But I don't pretend that I am better than someone who has the skills and nerve needed to provide food without the help of corporate entities.

CraigT42
CraigT42 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Joejoethedogfaceboy You're right, the better than anyone else comment was uncalled for.  However just because you can or can't afford other food doesn't make this animals death any more or less meaningful than a pig , cow, or chickens. As i said i do not enjoy hunting. (Oddly I enjoy camping and shooting, just not hunting) I can also afford to keep my freezer and pantry full.  That being said I love Deer season, my hunter friends always spot me a bit of venison.  It is twice as tasty as beef and has fewer hormones and fat. It doesn't have to be the primary, secondary or even tertiary reason for the hunt.  Motive is completely unimportant.  A deer killed for sport is no more or less dead than a deer killed for food.

@craig.thomas42 i never said I was better than anyone; I just don't understand the fascination of killing animals for sport.  and you can't tell me the primary reason to go hunting was their freezer was empty.  unless, of course, the iphone bill was higher than normal this month
