We Have a New Commenting System for You to Bitch About

snlcomments.jpg
Your anonymous comments are safe and sound.
And no, it's not Facebook, so don't worry your pretty little anonymous head. You will still be able to fire-hose the general populous from the cave of privacy afforded by your clever screen name. You will just be able to do it faster, and hopefully with fewer quirks.

The new system is called Livefyre. It's up and running now, although it may take a bit for previous comments to show up. I've put some things I know about it below, and will attempt to answer any questions you might have, as soon as I get back from picking up my kid at "preschool." (He's four months. His big thing is rolling onto his stomach and then whining about not being able to roll back. I think we can call it daycare.) Nick or Eric may also jump in.

Please be patient. We had to migrate every last pearl of wisdom uttered by you fine folks -- a job that took several days and sent several people to therapy. I expect some hiccups and you should too.

True Real Time:
Our online guru tells us that "you can see who is listening to a conversation and read comments in real time, making it easier to jump right into the discussion."

You can also jump out at any time. Or can you?

SocialSync:
"When conversation is happening about an article on Facebook or Twitter, you can now see that conversation within the commenting thread. You can also tag and import your friends from Twitter and Facebook within the comment stream yourself."

How many years will be until our bowel movements are automatically synced with Facebook and Twitter so our friends know when things are moving properly. Oh, and Instagram!

Notifications:
"You can choose to be alerted via email when someone replies to or likes your comment."

Related: Please tell your boss to expect an additional 14 percent drop in productivity.

One Platform:
We'll now offer a global profile system the Observer and all of its sister sites, which will allow you to follow your favorite writers or topics and basically custom curate your own little version of the Observer. This is happening across the digital media landscape. It's pretty cool but also concerning because we already self-select our news too much and avoid stories about topics that don't interest us naturally but may be important. But whatever: It's cool!

Your My Voice Nation profile -- Voice is a reference to the Village Voice, our New York sister pub -- is automatically linked with your Livefyre account, so you can ignore it entirely if you'd prefer. You can also sign in with an email address or any of your social media accounts.

I think that's it. Take it for a spin. May it be more advanced and functional than Disqus but less head-explod-y than Gawker's new system.

Don't like this one bit.

It is a serious downgrade.

Note the many deficiencies of the new Livefyre comment system vs. DISQUS --

1) Cannot EDIT posts, to correct errors or mistakes. Livefyre speciously claims that allowing editing would affect discussion continuity -- but they allow DELETING the entire post, which breaks ALL continuity. LAME !

2) Message THREADING is limited to only 2 replies!! -- After that, reply branching stops and all additional comments are simply stacked in a single pile. This absurd dysfunction makes robust discussions with multiple users impossible to follow. That's so Web 1.0.

3) MOBILE integration FAILS completely. Does not function with mobile platforms, especially in guest mode.

4) Claims to offer REAL TIME updates of Messages and posting Activity -- Numerous user activity profiles are stuck and frozen DAYS in the past! ... Only a fraction of their posts, or posts of friends being followed, are showing in the profiles / activity log.

5) "Follow that Story" fails completely. No new posts to stories being followed appear in a user's activity profile page.

6) Clicking on another User's icon to view their profile often times mistakenly links to your own profile / activity.

7) Way too much emphasis on Twitwit and Failbook. Are tweenagers their target market?

Was this system even Beta tested before implementation across the entire Village Voice network?

... "real time" updating ??

... all old DISQUS posts will be restored / integrated in a few hours ???

LOL!

great, another change for change's sake...

But how bout this:  FIX the bloody pages.  2200 lines of code typically, 3.6MB.  Many times never finish loading due to hangers out there getting lost.

ya ever think that people might try to check up on Home news on a shared connection like airport or hotel?????

Dear Mr. Tone while you're making changes and all is there any way you can bring back the square that let's one see all or most of the stories within a blog i.e unfair park and the city of ate? Do you know what I mean? Now you have to click on the blog "banner" and scroll thru the stories. With the old way one could see the most commented stories the most recent stories and I think there was also one other option as well if memory serves. Or am I just missing something here?

I don't know if its the commenting section or just voicenation, but I've been trying to disconnect it from my twitter account to no success. The commenting section itself doesn't autosave your preferences like disqus, so new comments are at the top by default. Last night, it took me three separate attempts to make a comment without it timing out. Generally, it just doesn't seem very stable. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but it feels like a step backwards.

ah technology...we all thank Al Gore for inventing the internet so that entrepreneurs can get the MUCH NEEDED FEDERAL HELP TO BUILD THEIR BUSINESSES ON THE NET.

Obama forgot to mention....while bragging about the GOVERNMENT INVENTED THE INTERNET AND PUT IT THERE SO ALL THE ENTREPRENEURS OWE THE GOVT FOR THEIR BUSINESS...OH, the INTERNET is what allowed MASSIVE outsourcing of US JOBS overseas for call centers, tech desks, IT support, retail and wholesale merchandising from offshore, and funds movements never reaching the USA.....yes, OBAMA....Bain capital is not the criminal of OFFSHORING.....it is YOUR GOVERNMENT internet that clobbered the us job market and continues to equalize labor costs at the global minimums.

Welp, I reckon I'm here to bitch..I saw this crap on the Houston blog yesterday so I knew it was coming.  First Tone ran off Richie Shitt (good), then Tone ran off Merten and Wilonsky (bad), now Tone has run off Disqus..Nobody likes change Tone, except for IT dorks and babies!

Populous = populace

I know, I know it's just a blog, but it makes me sad to see so many editing errors in all publications, whether it's a DO blog or the NYT.  No standards anymore.

@ozonelarryb try double clicking, it should show up.  But pasting, and undo are often not available.

joe.tone
joe.tone moderator

@beda50 Ugh, that's a bad one. I'll fix it. And for the record, I don't think the fact that it's a blog excuses it, for us or anyone. But I also don't think it's a standards thing. It's a resources thing. We produce at least four times the content than we did five years ago, and have the exact same number of copy editors: one. It's impossible to get all this copy edited before it goes up (or ever).

Same for the Times, and more or less every publication, every one of which is making more and more errors. We're trying, and we don't mind being shamed when we fuck up.

ozonelarryb
ozonelarryb

@scottindallas Ahhh, so they decided NOT to use the  convention we are all used to....  What an innovation!  More like a  way to drive loyal readers away.  Not surprised, just disappointed.

Also, no cursor displayed in 'Reply' composing.

'Doubleclick' highlights the word, but to no use, so wasted clicks.

Now Trending = what VVM wants to force you to see.

Gotta B Trendy !!

joe.tone
joe.tone moderator

@Storm_71 It did. The idea there -- and I'm still getting used to it myself -- is that for regular readers, you were seeing the same stories over and over there for days, even weeks at a time. The Now Trending box is designed to let you see a greater variety of stories. I do miss the most-commented box, though, I must admit, so I'll take this under advisement.

At least you can Edit and Correct your stories ... the new Livefyre comment system does NOT allow users to Edit or Correct their comments.

Feature Fail!

scottindallas

@ozonelarryb the no cursor bugs me.  As to the double click, I really don't understand it, cause sometimes the double click works, sometimes it doesn't.  sometimes you can paste a quote from someone, other times (most) you can't.  It makes no sense, and seems to be an easy fix, if someone tried to fix it.

Thank you kind sir. I am a regular reader one that wastes vast amounts of my company's time on this site. Unfortunately my company provides me with amounts to a fucking Comodor 64 style lap top (not your fault I understand) but it takes valuable clicking time going back and forth with this current set up. In my very humble opinion the old system worked better. On a side note I have no issue with the new commenting platform.

joe.tone
joe.tone moderator

@Storm_71 Well. Shit. No. That's not what I meant. But technically we did run Richie off, since it was a layoff, and Sam's and my tenures barely overlapped. I'm pretty sure he quit while I was still unpacking. Wilonsky is just the most ridiculous of the three.
